INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Sally I would like to know that too. I'm spending an arm and a leg on 4 eggs a day!!

on another note. I went to Tractor supply for meds for my sick chicken and I got to talking to a gal that works there. She said they will be getting in chicks Feb 25th. Regular stuff the first week or 2 then they are planning on more unusual after that. Yeah come on spring!!!

Guess who got stuck in the coop this evening.... yeah, me. The door shut behind me and the latch closed. We had a wire rigged to the inside to pull the latch up, but it must have gotten stuck on some chicken wire or a peice of wood. I messed with it for about 15 min with my fingers through the door frame until it popped open. I usually have my phone with me when I go out, but didn't grab it. You would also think after a while my husband would come looking for me. No, all he said was " but, you really like your chickens, and I thought you were just spending time with them." I don't know how long he would have waited. Probably until one of the kids asked where I was.
Anyway, Houdini lives yet another day.

I checked on my husband once. The coop door was shut and I thought maybe he was having trouble. Turns out he was watching the tiny chicks. Now that the chicks are bigger, and in the coop most of the day, we don't go into the coop if we don't have too. We can reach the food and water from the front (person) door and the nesting boxes open to the outside.
we have a bar latch on the inside and a second one on the outside of our person door. so if only one person is is the run and that person gets in the coop they can shut the door behind them and not get trapped. However if there are two people in the run it would be really easy to lock the first person in the coop.

We got our hatchery chicks all numbered tonight with leg bands. Now if I see one of them crowing I can tell which one needs to go to the crockpot. After all since they are 20 weeks they should start crowing or laying soon. The only thing is the processing. I really need to find someone to show me in person how to do it. I can live without the skin so the feathers would not be getting plucked but the rest of the processing, no matter how many videos I watch I just don't think I can do it.

I haven't been on here in FOREVER it seems. Looking for a few eggs or chicks in the Naked Neck variety. I'm in Goshen, and still have a small mixed flock of bantams.
Hey, Carole--thought maybe you had been carried off by a chicken hawk! Glad you're back.

Sally, I thought about climbing through the pop door to the run, but I wouldn't fit. I also didn't want to break the people door we just put on. I was willing to wait it out.
I'm with you on the processing, I feel comfortable doing it, but would like to see tricks or fast ways to get it done.

You must not of seen my previous post about my polish. lol He is in a pen on his own because he had no crest for awhile except he had just a little bit in the front. He got it all pulled out and its now growing back but the feathers havnt popped out yet. So I wouldnt be able to pull them up. Thats why i said there is nothing i can do for it.

Crafty chick, I read your post to my husband and he admits it would be a good while before he would've thought to check on me! And he said the same thing about me spending time with my chickens too!! I can spend a long time with my Millies , talking and petting!!
