INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Quote:
Johnson county gives out barn cats for much less than a house pet cat. They come fixed, with claws and they don't have fleas. Now that I have rehomed the puppies, I'm thinking of getting one or two more. The only problem is that for me they don't always stay. For what ever reason they like to run and live in the fields. But I only have 1 barn cat right now and if something happens to him I just know the mice will enter my house and upset me dearly.

Thank you all for your condolences.

I knew Chickie for a long time, so it's just hard to think of never seeing her again. We buried her next to one of her broodmates, Ducki, who died years ago. Hard to believe! Now the only one left of my first chickens is old Cubby.

This is the last picture I took of Chickie, back in June. She's been slowing down since around when this picture was taken, so I figure her age had just caught up to her.

In related news, my beloved Frou-Frou has gone into her first molt and is so, so moody. She does NOT want anything to do with me--obviously this is somehow MY fault! But today, she must have known something was different, because she came right up to me like usual and even tolerated some attention.

Forget laughter; chickens are the best medicine.
Pipd- I'm really sorry that you lost your hen. Still being new to chickens, I am really impressed that you had a chicken for that long. She must have received great care. It gives me hope that I can keep ours around as long if I care for them well.

I do have some slightly good news. I have read the info and suggestions and I am so excited that my girl was able to balance on both feet today. She is still wobbly, but she had all of her toes in the correct position. I had moved her to an even smaller crate so that it would limit her ability to move and I'm still considering a sling type contraption, but its just great to see any kind of improvement. Her left leg seems to be weak up near her hip. She does seem to be losing some weight, but she is still eating and drinking well. There is enough poo in the mornings that I am sure she is getting some food in.

On a sidenote, this breed (AS) is the only one I have that will not touch any kind of fruit, veggies, or yogurt when I take treats outside. Is that unusual? Also, the boys are just getting so pretty. Their top feathers are just adorable and their cheek patches are really pretty...almost an iridescent green/white. I know I will have to rehome them soon, but I just love looking at them.

Morning All!!

Pepper is the same this morning I made her some eggs and some left over mac n cheese for breakfast. I really appreciate all you kind words and support in this super confusing time. We've decided to wait and watch to see what happens. If she starts to look worse or loses weight we will have to put her down. Her quiality of life is most important to us. About 3 wks ago we let her out of the 20x20 dog run we have their coop in to free range as we do twice a day, she went out fine and came in limping. My son "hawked" them in to the enclosure for me as I stood guard at the door so I assumed he stepped on her which is why we thought it was broken at first. He swears he didnt step on her. To go out fine and come in limping is what is giving me a hard time believing its positively Mareks. However she was still roosting at night with the others. When the examined her she screamed when they messed with her thigh area and sent us home with Meloxicam. I noticed on Wednesday last week she wasnt roosting anymore so it is a bit worse than before. The vet said it seems like she might not feel her foot to use it. Soooo We're just waiting.

What Vet do you all see for your chickens?? Im using Avian Exotic Animal Clinic of Indianapolis (refered by my vet in Lebanon) In the last 6 wks I've spent over $600 on 2 chickens there. One we had to put down from egg peritonitis (woud have been her first egg) and then Pepper. I'd like to compare prices with anyone heres my list- $65 office visit $100 bloodwork $100 xrays $55 to PTS and the vial of medicine was $50 for a weeks worth. I really wanted a Vet that sees farm animals instead of exotic birds. I dont know if that'd make a difference in prices or experiance, im sure it probably wont but I'd love ya'll input on vets.

Again thanks for all the support and Advice!

Last spring I had a little cochin that tried to rrun through fence and hurt his leg, I wasn't sure if it was that or marecks and freaked. Every day, a couples times a day, I would fill the kitchen sink with warm water and hold him in it and move his leg around, (it was curled and he wouldn't use it) I upped his protein with some scrambled eggs, put chick saver and vitamins in his water and just exercised him in the sink. He was in his own brooder and it took about 3 weeks, but he recovered. The vet said it could have been a severely bruised pelvis and it takes time. Now that chick is Oliver the therapy chicken who lives at my mother in laws. :) GIve her time if you can. A bruised pelvis causing lack of use in a leg doesn't leave a mark to see looking through feathers. If her eyes look okay and she isn't wasting away, as long as she still eats and drinks she may recover. I also have a silkie with a curled foot that is 2 years old and other than having to take her out of the coop in the morning, she gets around fine. She has finally figured out how to go back up the ramp at night, just not down. lol

Okay so I am trying to figure out the difference between ventilated and not causing a draft. Our coop has two windows in the front and the corrugated roof is open at the "humps" of the roofing. I usually crack the far window away from the chickens roosts for ventilation, but I'm afraid it's either not enough or will cause drafts. Based on these pictures, could anyone suggest something different we could do, or let me know if just cracking the window this winter would be fine. Thanks!
Inside the coop

the silkie coop has an open window in the door in the picture that I hope will be okay for ventilation this winter, since it is under the run.

I'm so sorry your chickie doesn't seem to be getting better :( that's a tough situation even without the scare factor of it possibly being a highly contagious disease! Reading your story though I'd have to agree its more likely to be an injury.

Is the Avian Exotic vet Dr.Lennox? I know several people that have had less than pleasant experiences with her, and I know she tends to be surgery happy. The prices you quoted sound pretty typical though. I don't know if any of the farm vets around you see chickens but I know Thorntown Veterinary Clinic does farm animals also Bush veterinary clinic in flora and Dr Maloney with New Winchester vet clinic may travel up that way. Like I said though I don't know if they see chickens and they're more likely to look at it as just a chicken instead of a pet. Good luck! I hope she starts improving!!

I have a rooster from the Ron Fogle Line of RIR. He is not up to my breeding standards, but he is lovely and sweet. If anyone is interested we are asking a rehoming fee, please message me. I also have a feathered leg easter egger rooster that could use a good home. Again message me for details. I tried to get pics today but it was too chilly and overcast. The colors and images just came out funny.

Thanks for the Vet info!! Im very close to Thorntown I will call them to inquire! Although I am willing to drive just about anywhere lol! Yes it is Dr Lennox's office however I've seen several different Drs there and yes they wanted to do surgery on Opal (leghorn) that we had to PTS the quote was $1500+ for total services not including the $265. I need chicken health insurance! Lol!!
