I agree. That sounds like a good idea and its great to hear stories of those who have succeeded. Its appreciated.

Broody Mamma and Kiddo update!

It looks like tonight may be the beginning of the end for mamma and chicks. I went out to be sure everyone got in tonight and mom and one kiddo were on the roost.

One of the others was in one of the nest boxes and the other sibling was on the perch in front of that nest box. It was dark. I moved them both to the roost next to mamma, but not sure it that was a good idea or not. Hope they don't get disoriented and fall off!

They are 9 weeks old.

I'll check on them later to see what's up out there.

My grandma's freezer quite working and she asked me if I wanted it for feed storage. So i got it and it is so much nice than the old frig I have. I have the frig still off hidden away for back up, it is ugly someone put floral wallpaper on it. The freezer can hold 6 bags of feed. Heres some pics of it, not sure if other people do this but if not there a new idea for feed storage!

And found this little guy the other day. He was not very friendly, of course lol. You can see in the picture that he is hissing at me. Hes not full grown. Off to the creek he went!

I like that freezer idea!

A question about it. When you leave an empty fridge or freezer shut without being turned on they get that "smell" and tend to grow mold. How does that work with the feed?

Okay so I am trying to figure out the difference between ventilated and not causing a draft. Our coop has two windows in the front and the corrugated roof is open at the "humps" of the roofing. I usually crack the far window away from the chickens roosts for ventilation, but I'm afraid it's either not enough or will cause drafts. Based on these pictures, could anyone suggest something different we could do, or let me know if just cracking the window this winter would be fine. Thanks!
Inside the coop

the silkie coop has an open window in the door in the picture that I hope will be okay for ventilation this winter, since it is under the run.
Which way are your coops oriented? Meaning...which side are the windows on (N,S,E,W) and which way is the "typical" prevailing wind?

Hey guys, all of my chickens are sweet hearts....except for my RIR girls. They are gorgeous, but they bite me, unprovoked. I can be walking through the pasture and they run up and nip my legs. They are mean to the 4 week old too. Any advice? They lay awesome eggs, so no "off with their heads", I just don't get the aggression. I'll trade them for some nice girls if any one wants some pretty RIR's that lay nice eggs, if I can't fix the issue. These are the best pics i have of them. They are so pretty, they are just my only girls who bite me. Even the roosters don't bite like they do.

I had the idea years ago. This one smells like peaches, because my grandma used to have a bunch of frozen peaches in it. the frig I had didnt smell like anything but feed. And I have never had a problem with mold before.
