White showgirl I hatched few weeks ago. "She" got excited to get her picture taken. I love the contrast of the blue skin against white feathers.

And lastly my (barred) lavender bantam cochin. Still trying to decide if she us barred or just a lavender.

Ugh me too! Too much dander and dust.

My Embden goose, the smallest girl flew OVER a 4 foot fence today. They fly?
I was dazed for a second! I have never seen one get off the ground, ever! These are heavy bodied birds!
And I have owned all 4 breeds several times.
Their wingspan is enormous, they are so excited when they come out for the day.
pretty impressive to see 17 geese running with their wings fully extended
love.gif

I love when they all run towards me, beautiful sight to see. Hoping someday to catch it on a video.

Yes I see the barred too! Hope to see more of those, they are very attractive birds.
Just love the showgirls, I wasn't sure I liked them at first. The more I see them I really like them.
I am already in love with those babies!

can't wait!

I just saw this, it looks like a nice deal for a small amount of chickens.

Dex Holla posted: WOW! Thanks for posting that coop! I sent an email hoping it was still availble but haven't heard back yet. I'll keep watching craigslist!

Sally and Dex Holla ~ That's basically the same coop I have-- it's called The Garden Coop. You can google it. There are different variations you can do to the basic plan. I have the plans if anyone wants them. The coop on CL is a great deal for $450. I do freelance graphic design work and one of my clients is a construction company. I bartered, and it took two carpenters two days and cost way more than $450! I have 6 chickens and 1 bantam in mine and I could fit a couple more chickens in my sleeping coop area with room to spare. I let mine out all day to free range, so it's basically a coop for nighttime.
bradselig ~ Nice photos! I’ll take a silver-blue and the lavender.

Are you selling them?
Kiniska~ Good to see your post. How is your English Black Orp rooster doing? Are you breeding him in the spring with one of your English Blue Orps?
jchny ~ Congrats on the quail babies. I bet they are fun to watch! (on your break time from building and clearing land!)

I got a showgirl egg today and will continue to collect them for you until we meet on Friday if you want them. I have 2 hatching right now, another 1 or 2 going into lockdown in a couple days, and 6 more going into lockdown in about a week and half. I really don't want to set them but don't want to eat them either. Let me know and I'll just bring them with me!

No not selling them (may sell the silver blues, just depends on how they turn out). The lavender barred has cost me quite some money. Between the first set of eggs at $45 shipped and she being the only one hatch, and the second batch of older eggs I paid $15 for shipping and none hatching, she is officially my most expensive chick that I paid $60 for lol. She has a few eggs to give me before I even think of selling her. I plan on breeding her to my black (if it's a roo), and then breeding a male offspring back to the hen (if the genetics are correct, he should be a barred Cochin split to lavender). From there I'll breed those offspring to plain lavenders. Of course this is my plan if I can't get ahold of more barred lavender eggs. So in the future I'll have some chicks available, but probably not until 2015.

Quote: It makes sense. Should work out that way.
DH wants the blue cochin LF. I would love to find some but don't want hatchery stock.
I would even like black, lavender etc. They are sweet birds.
I know jsummers was breeding them, will have to text her, need to check in with her anyways.
She breeds bantam millies too! I keep forgetting she has them.
We have sibling piglets and remind each other on vacc's and dewormings

Ok, if any of you remember, I had a questions about quarantining a few birds. I set them up, in a space, in my garage. I brought them home on the 6th and have given them the "once over" a couple of times. They are just beautiful and look very healthy. Today I let them out, in a section of the yard, 100+ft from my coop. I went through them all again and while checking the Roo, I SWEAR, I saw maybe a lice. Like one, no scabs, no eggs nothing else. The 3 girls had nothing on them. Right now these birds are so full with their winter feathers, I seriously can barely find the vents. I did eventually, but I'm so inexperienced, that if there was a lice or two...I don't think I was quick enough to spot them.
hmm.png

So should I dust them anyway? Really? I know I'm going to do it anyways, but I guess I just want the advice of you seasoned BYC'ers.
As well as that, I really wanted to make sure they didn't have scaly leg mites and after looking at tons of photos, I think they do. They're Cochins, and again, since I'm so new at this I have no idea what a minor infestation would look like on them. So many feet feathers! Argh!
Here are awful pictures I took...

Sorry, the lighting is so blown out, you probably can't tell. I can retake them tomorrow if there's any doubts.

I looked at lots of healthy feet photos and they are very smooth. These feet look too bumpy and have a "brown spot" right in the middle of some of the scales, where I'd think it should be nice and smooth. Right? There's no major scabbing, from what I can see, but warm water soak and apply petroleum jelly?

Seriously, I need to catch a break.

Annie
Ps, Woooooooo happy Saturday niiiight!
lilmizscareall ~ On your photos, there appears to be a few of leg scales that look a little raised like scaly leg mites (my BR had them)-- However, If you can take a large sized photo tomorrow, it will help. bradselig could tell you if the legs look normal for a Cochin. Most of the online photos like this one (below) are of are severe cases, but this photo shows how the individual scales are pushed out and look larger since the mites burrow underneath. If they are scaly legs mites, they can be easily treated especially if they just started. I tried several methods, but the easiest/quickest was washing the feet and applying VetRx (oils that act as a natural pesticide and as a barrier to smother the mites) with an SOFT toothbrush (to get under the scales). I did that three days in a row and then weekly as needed. The mites like to also live in bedding and on chicken poop, so the coop must be cleaned daily. They can spread to other chickens, but the only other one that started to get them was my SLW, so we treated her and they quickly cleared up. Because the mites lay eggs much like fleas, you have to keep the coop clean and keep an eye on their legs.

As far as lice, luckily mine haven’t had them, but I would think you’d see much more than a few. Here's a photo for ID. Personally, I'd rather not use Sevin dust on my chickens, but I haven't had to deal with a big outbreak either. Regardless, IMO, I like to know what the condition is before treating. But-- I don't have a large flock, so that makes that philosophy easier to follow.
