INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

OK question for all of you. I started feeding my chicks Dumor poultry chick starter. Fed them maybe 20lbs. Went back to get a 50 lb bag and when I opened it I noticed it was darker. So I started looking at the packaging. What I bought is actually Dumor chick starter/grower.

The poultry chick starter:

Chick Starter 24% Feed is a complete crumble formula for starting turkey and game bird chicks such as quail, pheasant and chukar, which have very high nutritional requirements early in life. Premium nutrition during this early stage of life will support strong skeletal growth, proper muscle development, beautiful feathering and will get birds off to a healthy start.
  • 24% protein rich in essential amino acids
  • Easily eaten even by tiny quail chicks

The Dumor chick starter/grower:

Chick Starter/Grower 20% Feed is a complete formula for starting chicks, ducks, and geese up to 10 weeks of age and for growing turkeys and game birds from 6 weeks to market or laying age. Premium nutrition at the correct life-stage results in strong healthy, productive birds with beautiful plumage.
  • Designed for chickens, ducks and geese from 0 to 10 weeks of age
  • Designed for turkeys, quail, pheasant and chukar from 6 to 12 weeks of age
  • Provides essential nutrients for optimum development
  • Additional vitamins and minerals are not required

Ummm...which one am I supposed to be feeding 1 and 6 week old chicks? Have I hurt them by them getting too much protien at this young age?

I am guessing its the starter/grower. I have mixed what I had left with equal parts of the new. Their poo is soft. Is it normal for the poo to change with the protein amount/new food even though its the same brand?

Thanks,

Deb

And yes, both of my brooder boxes are in my bedroom. A larger one is being build today for the 6 week old, so we can put them into the garage. Still too cold for them outside. Still need to build the coop. Which is gonna be up in about 3 weeks. And I truly can not wait until they are all outside! It was nice at first, relaxing to hear the cheep cheep. Now, yea, not so much. Love them, but I have a feeling I will love them so much more outside. And the dust, I dust daily!

hmmm, that might be a bit high for layer chicks. But i am pretty new to the layer babies myself... Anyone with baby experience care to comment? I know that's a good rate for meatbirds.

Greetings all

After digging around on the website for current listing of chicks for sale I realize the best thing I can do is buy eggs at this point.

I have 10 RIR's (1 Roo 9 girls) Would like to add to my flock at some point with a couple of broody breeds so I can eventually hatch some chicks naturally. As I am only looking for a total of around 4 at the most, this rules out ordering online. Although I have looked and Mypetchickens offer this, but they have none available.

I am looking for broody or chocolate/tinted egg layers.

Hoping someone on the Indiana thread might be able to help out. I am willing to trade either a couple of my new laying hens or purchase of new chicks.

There might be a possibility of trading some RP turkey eggs this spring.

Well I bought another prob digital humidity/therm tonight. I stuck it in incubator with the other regular digital gauge and mercury gauge. My new one is reading 105.6 steady but my other two that i have had in there from the start only read 100-101 steady. Now im thinking my new one is off because if the other 2 are off then my eggs would not have made it this long with a temp of 105. LOL

Welcome Vickichiki! Are you under the impression that RIR will not go broody? I have a flock of 30 RIR and have already hatched one clutch of eggs from a broody hen.

Sorry to hear about the Roos tail, but thankfully he is still alive!

Yes, I am thankful of that. He also got one of my hens but I got to them before he killed her. That's pretty much made up our minds to fence in a large area
for them to range. This isn't the first time by any means.

Yea, I don't blame you with the fence, I'm going to fence in an acre this spring for hem to free range. I mainly have an issue with the road and loss several to cars. Thankfully I haven't lost any in months. The summer was the last time. But I'd like to get turkeys this year and they seem more stubborn and probably hold up traffic more than the chickens (of course I'm assuming this). If anything it will help ease my mind when they are free ranging.

I totally agree with you! I have lost several to the traffic, including one of my turkeys. I was planning on fencing in a big area for mine but lost job wednesday and today we was suppose to get our tax refund back well that didnt happen either. I owed money for student loan and they applied tax refund to it so all i got back this year was $400. Very BADDDD winter for us this year!!
