I had the incubator and brroder in the room next to mine. I could close the door to shut out the light and, somehwat. block the noise. I put both sets of chicks outside after 3 weeks. The dust was terrible in the brooder room and my wife kept having to re-wash clothes! hahaha The chicks have all done very well even with the cold nights. The coop is an insulated shed and the chicks are in a smaller, confined area with a 250 watt heat lamp.I watch them on webcam and they run all over and make noises like they did here. The adults are probably not too crazy about the noisy kids! The teenagers are not as noisy now, and they also have to deal with the kid noises. so far, so good!

I was wondering if anyone around Palmyra or Corydon In had any ameracauna chicks for sale. I have been looking for awhile and watching posts and even craigslist to try to find a few. I have 1 hen that lays every day and would love to add 3 or 4 more to my small flock. If anyone has any or knows someone, can you point me in their direction. My girl is sweet and runs around with my silkies and I love the blue green eggs I get from her.

Mommy 2 silkies, orschiline in corydon will let you pre ordere, I just put in a order for some chicks. They should be in around march 1 st

Anyone near Crown Point (NWI) Crown feed and supply is having a "poultry day" March 12th @ 6:30 pm. A nutrition specialist from purina brand will be there talking bout stuff, there's door prizes, games etc.

http://crownfeedsupply.com/events

I've never actually been there, but it was on my list of to-stop-by's for a while now, just waitin on the girls to polish off their current bag of pellets.

I used to Live in Cedar Lake, and went to Crown Feed often. I had got my CX's there the first time about 30 years ago. I will add the event to the page for lake county people!

Jchny- why is Rebel quarantined? Is he new or???

Update on new chicks. The ones I got at RK are doing good. The wyandottes are growing so much faster than the Bantys. I'm going to have to separate them in a few days. They run over the smaller ones. I am having a bit of diarea from them. They are eating and drinking good. And the mailed chicks are all doing great. Even the ones I revived. Thought once I took the wyandottes out that I'd put the 2 Bantys from the mailed batch with them. Will this be ok? They are about the same size. And suggestions on diarea aid?

Oh, on the babies i think thats fine. I would use a little ACV (apple cider vinegar) in the water. That will give them a little probotics and help them get straightened out.
Rebel was wondering around the gas station one morning when my oldest daughter was heading to work. The attendant said there were 2, and had been there a few days. She wasn't able to find the other one, but caught Rebel and brought him home. here he is currently in the "porch/breezeway" area we don't really use, it's more storage. Thought at first he was an australorp but his foot pads are yellow.

he is in a large crate, in the breezeway. so is Butters the silkie yet another crate.... My BAs are also out there in another crate waiting for above freezing to go out to their new home. Butters will sleep at nite, gees not Rebel! Its concrete floors and drywall but no heat. the babies still have a small heat lamp tho. I need them all out bad, come on spring!
I hear you--I need chickens out of my house badly! I'm not even sure how many are in my basement now. Most were through their quarantine and/or old enough to go outside before cold weather, but I had an outbreak of apparent coryza in one of my pens. So vaccinations for everyone, plus a booster shot 3-4 weeks later, and by that time it was too cold, so here they are. I love my chickens, but I love them more when they aren't penned in cages and crates 24-7!
Still have to clean out and disinfect the pen before I can move anyone back in there but need the right weather when I have the time.
Don't know whether I'll ever get all of the dust cleaned up in my basement!

OK question for all of you. I started feeding my chicks Dumor poultry chick starter. Fed them maybe 20lbs. Went back to get a 50 lb bag and when I opened it I noticed it was darker. So I started looking at the packaging. What I bought is actually Dumor chick starter/grower.

The poultry chick starter:

This high protein DuMOR

Chick Starter 24% Feed is a complete crumble formula for starting turkey and game bird chicks such as quail, pheasant and chukar, which have very high nutritional requirements early in life. Premium nutrition during this early stage of life will support strong skeletal growth, proper muscle development, beautiful feathering and will get birds off to a healthy start.
  • 24% protein rich in essential amino acids
  • Easily eaten even by tiny quail chicks

The Dumor chick starter/grower:

Chick Starter/Grower 20% Feed is a complete formula for starting chicks, ducks, and geese up to 10 weeks of age and for growing turkeys and game birds from 6 weeks to market or laying age. Premium nutrition at the correct life-stage results in strong healthy, productive birds with beautiful plumage.
  • Designed for chickens, ducks and geese from 0 to 10 weeks of age
  • Designed for turkeys, quail, pheasant and chukar from 6 to 12 weeks of age
  • Provides essential nutrients for optimum development
  • Additional vitamins and minerals are not required

Ummm...which one am I supposed to be feeding 1 and 6 week old chicks? Have I hurt them by them getting too much protien at this young age?

I am guessing its the starter/grower. I have mixed what I had left with equal parts of the new. Their poo is soft. Is it normal for the poo to change with the protein amount/new food even though its the same brand?

Thanks,

Deb

And yes, both of my brooder boxes are in my bedroom. A larger one is being build today for the 6 week old, so we can put them into the garage. Still too cold for them outside. Still need to build the coop. Which is gonna be up in about 3 weeks. And I truly can not wait until they are all outside! It was nice at first, relaxing to hear the cheep cheep. Now, yea, not so much. Love them, but I have a feeling I will love them so much more outside. And the dust, I dust daily!
