INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Old salt- can you check in when this is done? I hope you are good.

Sorry it took so long to get back to you.

The storm hit Lebanon pretty hard.

I just finished glueing the feathers back on all my chickens.

The tornado that did the damage passed 1/2 mile south of me. We never heard it or saw it, but my eldest daughter who also lives in Lebanon did see it.

No damage, thank God.

I am now in Charleston, WV helping youngest daughter with a variety of spruce up projects on her house so she can sell it and move back to Indiana. She got the job in Indianapolis at the realty board place. We are in the process of helping her buy a a nice sized tri-level fix-er-uper house on Morse Reservoir in Noblesville. She starts her new job on 1/2/13.

Then I'll have all 3 girl-chicks back in the central Indiana nest.

Word is there was a tornado near Lebanon. Hoping Old Salt and anyone near there is ok.
I was sitting in the house watching leaves pass the window at Mach 3 when I decided it would be a good time to walk down the driveway to the street and see what was going on. I later found that my wife, in her supporting role, went to the basement. Guys and gals.............

It was kind of interesting to watch the wind storm. Helluva lot of air deciding to go someplace else in a hurry. After a few minutes it started to rain HARD. I saw it coming across the field, but didn't time my exit all that well. It felt like 500 BB gunners were unleashing on me. Too bad no one was there to video the old guy lopeing down the driveway dodging Rotten Dog Millie who was running circles around me and hoping we were headed for the ATV to go for a long run.

The chickens all went inside. The ducks and guineas seemed to enjoy it. They stayed out through it all.

I and my extended family all got through it with no damage, despite my efforts to the contrary.

I still have a VERY clear picture in my mind of climbing to the top of the garage roof in Irving, TX when I was 12 (that would have been about 1957) and watching a tornado go through Dallas ripping out a 2 block wide path. My dad said it passed within a block of the factory where he worked and he could see a pickup truck fly out of the side of it from about 200 feet up. I tried to pull my 11 year old brother up so he could see, but Mom grabbed hold of him and pulled him down. She kept yelling at me to get down, but nothing short of a second blast from a shotgun would have gotten me down.

Well I ended up using the wazine on my big kids. Does anyone know how long I have to throw out eggs? The package said don't use on chickens used for eggs, so that worries me a bit. The wazine I got is for poultry.

Eat the eggs and you won't get worms.

Seriously, don't waste the eggs. Make a huge omlet, with shells, if you want, and toss it over the fence for the chickens to recycle. They already have the medicine in them, a smidgen more won't hurt anything.

When my 2 older daughters were small and there would be a lightning storm, I would take them out on the porch and set them in my lap and go on and on about how pretty it was and how the booms were like free fireworks. I made a real big deal out of it. After a few times, they would come and get me to go out and watch.

My #3 daughter is 8 years younger and somehow got neglected in this regard. She is nervous in lightning storms. The older girls are not.

If you have young ones, this might be something to emulate.

I had a Wow! moment this afternoon.  I'm still trying to finish getting my garden boxes tucked in for the winter, spreading hay mulch & manure.  I walked past one of the boxes that I had finished Saturday afternoon and noticed there was a concrete block laying at a weird angle in it.  I wondered how it got there and then realized it was one of the concrete blocks I had placed on the front anchors of our hay storage shed last week to help stabilize it during a really windy day.  This is the same shed that got blown over during Sunday's storm and is about 30 feet from the garden bed where I found the concrete block!  I still can't figure out how that block managed to get hurled in the air when the shed flew up -- would have been amazing to see!  Just glad it didn't do any damage.

And if anyone around us needs eggs, our chickens are still laying -- got 26 today -- been averaging 20 a day lately.  I took 20 dozen to the food pantry today and still have 11 dozen in the fridge plus a few dozen duck eggs.  I've been trying to do some extra baking to use the duck eggs, but I can't keep up with them -- collected 9 eggs both yesterday and today from those girls!  :cd   Anybody have any good recipes that use a lot of eggs besides quiche, egg casserole, deviled eggs, etc??!!

I WISH I lived near you! None of my flock is laying yet and I'm so sick of buying eggs...

Hello all,

I originally posted this in the buy-sell-trade forum but got little input so I thought I'd post him here. I have a Silver Leghorn (bantam) rooster that I'm looking to give to someone nearby who would want to love and add him to their flock. He came as the rare exotic from McMurray in my order this summer. He'll be 22 weeks on Friday and being a bantam he gets pushed around by the bigger birds. Here are some pictures.

Thank you for looking

Awe, I hate to hear that! I went thru it when I had a small flock....what seems like forever ago!! Nothing irritated me more than to walk up to those eggs in the store and pick them up...THEN PAY for them!! Ooooo I hated it!

OK done venting! LOL

Wait...just realized you said yet...how old is your flock?

BackyardBitten ~Haha That reminds me of people who get their seed catalogs in early spring and start feeling anxious. I noticed on your signature that you ONLY have 3 chickens??? I thought I had a small flock. You obviously NEED more SOON! I bet they won't last through the winter unless you have enough to keep each other warm!

I not only suffer from chicken math, but seed math too! I was so excited I got 2 seed catalogs & my Indiana Berry catalog all this week!! The one seed catalog is from Baker Creek Seeds -- I LOVE that seed company. They sent out to previous customers their brand new, expanded catalog (also have a smaller regular one) that is almost 3/4" thick -- wow -- I was excited to see it. I need to update my seed inventory (yes, an excel spreadsheet -- I'm such a seed geek!) since I emptied out some packets this summer, but to let you know how my seed math works, I have over 30 varieties of tomatoes, at least a dozen different peppers and cucumbers, 6 or 7 varieties of basils, various lettuces, beans, squashes, herbs, etc. I use my spreadsheet to keep track of all the seeds, their length of seed viability, when & where I got them, varieties of each veggie together (all the black tomatoes, red tomatoes, orange tomatoes, yellow tomatoes...) etc. Seed math was another reason we had to move to some acreage -- I didn't have enough space to plant everything!!

Wish we were closer! I'd take some of those duck eggs off your hands :)

Good to hear from you John! Glad you and your family are alright! My DH was standing outside watching the sky while I hunkered down in the hallway with the kids :) must be a man thing!
