INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I got a new SD card finally for my camera, instead of using my phone all the time, so I got some farm pics. You all know me, constantly posting pictures. Hope you don't mind. :)

Someone is definitely not white. Mystery chick.

Nice makeshift brooder. And as always cute animals!

Everyone looks great! I think the mystery chick is a porcelain.
Brad on our members list is it too late to add a looking for or in the market to buy column?

Well, the ones I hatched in Aug are outside in the big coop. The bantys are in the garage brooder. No heat lamp; haven't had for quite some time. Typically I will let them get fully feathered and adjust slowly to colder temps and have them in the garage by 6 weeks, depending how quickly they feather out. Keep the heat lamp with them for awhile or when extremely cold and just go from there. Basically just letting them show me how they're going to weather the temps. I have some 6 week old ones out in the garage too. Granted they have a heat lamp because one of them for some reason still has a fuzzy head where as the others are fully feathered already. They're doing just fine.

Moving them outside is always a bit more challenging, I usually have to allow them to free range with the big bunch for a few weeks, then work on putting them in the coop at night so they learn that's the place to be. A couple of nights and they get it but they are always the last ones in at night for the first couple of weeks. Even if it's only a few hours a day is better than not. I work from home a lot so I have the advantage of being here. I start out ... even when it's cold outside .. a couple of nice afternoon hours every day for a couple of weeks and then out they go. I've done at least 5 different broods in the past year like this and they adjust without any issues. ***Always have Several different feed stations and watering stations so that they have an opportunity to eat and drink where the older chickens are not because they will get picked on and chased***

I hope that helps some. It's never an exact science for sure; it always depends on weather, time and of course the chicks!

Evening, folks. I had a bit of excitement this morning with the girls. Just as I was finishing scooping the coop for the day, I noticed there was something wrong with my Light Bron Leghorn, Whiri. One side of her face was covered in some sort of black gunk. After finally catching her for a closer look, I realized that it was dried on blood! :th Instant panic mode! Thank goodness I had my chicken first aid kit handy! So I got her cleaned up and couldn't actually find a definite source for the blood, just that it looked like a couple of the tips on her comb had been bleeding, and the side of her face that was covered in blood is the side that her comb leans to. I do realize that their combs will bleed a lot when wounded, but MAN, I didn't expect quite so much from a seemingly small wound! I think maybe someone pecked her in the middle of the night. Most of my older girls are molting, so everyone's in a bad mood out there as is. These birds keep me on my toes sometimes.

thanks,
My basement ones are about 4 weeks. They still have fuzzy heads too. We have a garage that we could move them to but it is not fully finished and so not predator proof. I need to come up with a way to keep them safe there. We have never had more than our barn cat enter the garage at night, but if he can get in so can other animals.

This was mentioned in the natural thread but did you all see the sale on nu stock
