INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Regarding the chickens dumped at shelters thing, there was a big stink about it not too long ago, and what was found was that it was just something else used as reason not to allow chickens in certain cities. One article refuting these showed that there were only a few hundred chickens being dumped versus hundreds of thousands of dogs and cats each year. Not that big of a deal if you ask me.

 More like, "I'm glad I have an owner that is aware that I'm a chicken, so I can live a happy and natural life." ;)

ETA: Odd, it didn't quote...

My little guy, Po, got another chance with the girls and has been behaving so well. :D Thought I'd show off a few pictures of the handsome little chap. He's teeny-tiny still, even smaller than Margie! I think the only birds he's bigger than are the Sebrights.

He wouldn't cooperate for a nice side-profile picture.

He certainly grew up to be a very handsome boy. Hope he "behaves" for you!

Calf update:
My Holstein is weak. Have been out with him every half hour pushing electrolytes.
This reminds me a lot of parvo in dogs, had a bad case of it in german sheperd pups we took from a home (during my Animal control days)
Calves have no bloody stools but everything goes right through them.
Jersey mix (Ribeye) is starting to play a little, so he is responding very well.
Going to be a long night! But Lil Sirloin is a very strong willed baby, so I am still hoping he improves.
I have them warm, put a heater in the trailer to keep their body temps up.
I have it securely fastened and covered with a piece of hardware cloth so Ribeye doesn't knock it over.
It has the anti-tip shut off feature but I am soo paranoid about fire!
Scours really weakens them, and they get chilled easily. Its horribly cold outside, 20 degrees here, UGH!
Checked on all my other critters and everyone's cozy and feels warm.
They were NOT happy I woke them up

But this was such a drastic temp change, I was worried.

It's about 16 degrees out right now. Everything's frozen and frosted over. My hens, in their unheated and uninsulated coop, eagerly came outside to scratch around and eat snow. Po's sounded the alarm this morning for a flyover (it looked like it was just a crow), but everyone's getting along just fine now. No frostbite, no frozen hens, no difficulty whatsoever with the weather. Hmm... ;)

Same here! I have heated waterers in the coop but had to change the rubber dishes I have outside in the pens. Man is it cold though! My plastic bowls inside the heated waterers also worked! My homemade heater for the quart waterers also worked. For that I just took a small reptile heat pad that runs off 4watt and taped it with foil tape to the inside bottom of a small plastic tub. Turned the tub upside down and out waterer on top. Works as a charm!

Also I have silkie/showgirl eggs hatching! One out, 2 have externally pipped. I originally had 6 eggs but 3 didn't make it through the power outage. With the 18 other silkie eggs, I think I had to toss 4 out, but the rest go into lockdown on Tuesday!

My birds weren't quite sure what to do when they saw the white stuff on the ground.

This after most of them braved the wind/snow yesterday outside yesterday. A handful of the lower pecking order birds got out right away and were met with a nice treat. The water heater I made (100 watt light bulb inside of a cinder block) kept the water from freezing once the wind/snow quit.

All my waters are frozen. I dont use heated waters or anything. I have an extension cord that I plug in for light when I am out and its dark but that is it. A few of the chickens enjoy the weather, but a majority, well they don't approve of it thats for sure. I have to go work in the barn today.

I have 2 pairs of chickens for sale if any one is interested. The first pair I got at the show and the second pair one was hatched, one was bought.

A pair of Salmon Favorolle bantams. They do have vulture hocks. Vulture hock are extra feathers on the hock area, they would get DQed if they were shown. The pullet laid an egg the first day I got her but not one since.

A pair of Ameraucana bantams (cockerel black, pullet blue) I hatched the rooster and bought the pullet. I have two many roosters of this breed and instead of trying to get rid of him by himself I thought I would make it a pair instead. Since I have too many I kept my best males and females.

If any of you guys are interested you can pm me for more details and I don't have any pictures, but if you are interested I can.

I hope he makes it! Good luck and stay warm out there!
