INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Alright, I think the time has come to set up a Facebook page and eventually a website for my chicken obsession. The only hard part is coming up with a name! I have a couple that I'm not sure about and would love to hear your opinions! Im also very open to other ideas. Here are a few I've come up with thus far:
Silver Hackle Farms (based from having the Birchen Marans first and plan to always have some sort of silver hackled birds, however does it sound too restrictive?)
Pleasant Plain Poultry (based off of a small practically non existent town that is a couple miles from my house. To me, sounds too generic and boring)
A guy and His Chicks poultry farm(pretty self explanatory lol, but seems more "modern" and fits more of my sense of humor)

Pleasant Plainsis fitting, but maybe a bit girly? A guy and his chicks sounds perfect for you. Picking a name, unlike anyone else's, is going to set you apart. It should stand out and speak about you!

I opened the coop this morning to find Cricket lying on the floor, alone. She must have fallen off the perches last night and gotten too cold without any feathers on her, or even the other hens' warmth around her. She's gone. She's just gone. I don't know what to think. If I had brought her in last night, she would probably still be here. I'm just devastated.

She was my perpetual stink-eye bird. She was also the only hen that loved to go camping. I don't even want to think about camping out next summer without her here. It's been a tough year for me as far as losses, and now I'm completely heartbroken again.

Oh Pipd

You have had a very painful year. I am truly sorry for your loss.
Thanks Danand. Unfortunately I don't have any no sew fleece on hand. What I do have are old blue jeans. So my girls are gonna have Blue jean biker jackets. So they can be biker Chicks. (Hehehehe)

Jchny ~ good to see you are back. I pray your health continues to improve. Sorry about the calves. Someday when I start looking for a pair of goats, I'm sure I'll run into something similar. For now I just keep reading trying to learn all about the setup needed and the breed I want, Nubian.

How early do ducks typically lay? I went out in the pre-dawn hours today to try and get eggs before they were frozen. Nope the ducks still won and the eggs were frozen to the point of cracked shells. The water in the coop was barely glazed over with ice so I thought there was hope. The lights had been on for about 15 minutes in the coop other than the red heat lamps that were on the water. I'm enjoying the duck eggs and more ducks are not out of the picture but I need to get those eggs before they freeze. I thought of putting a heat light on the spot where they lay but it is not the same spot for more than a couple of days. It seems like as soon as the ducks pick a spot the younger pullets start moving in on it, like a battle scene and it becomes the pullet sleeping area. Still during the day those 2 ducks rule the coop and run. They even herded my RIR roos around the run when I let them mingle yesterday.
They are like all the other birds. it changes a little every day. They are excellent layers also!
My pekin will still randomly drop and egg on the ground rather than the community nest.
They certainly will dominate a coop, mine stay in with my chinese geese and its a pretty level dominance order between them all.

Jchny- soooo glad your better. We were all worried about you. You've had such a hard time.

Chicken saddles- I used no sew fleece last spring when some of mine were looking bad. Super easy and cheap. Many colors to choose from and you can make them any size. I made mine about 5-6 inches wide and 5-8 inches long. Cut slits for the wings to go thru and I rounded the edges. Worked great.

Oh we must see pics!! if you get the opportunity please take a few photos.
I do have some of the fleece in my scraps chest, just waiting for a perfect purpose!

I am happy to report that Jules is back to her old self today. Before I took her back out, I tried my hand at a hen saddle. I have decided to try to make one for each of my girls. She took to it just fine. :)

Here she is sporting her new dress. :)
Nicely done! Did you create the pattern, or find one? I will be making several this winter too.

Hehe, thats the only reason I haven't done a F page yet.
I am terribly with catchy names

I don't have much experience with chickens, but have been in marketing for a gabillion years. Here's my two cents:
Hackle has kind of a negative connotation of a confrontation-- don't get your hackles up -- roosters fighting, and it even applies to humans fighting. Also, dogs get their hackles (neck hairs) up when they are ready to fight.
Pleasant Plain Poultry -- Alliteration is great; I love that aspect, but you're correct about the words sounding generic/boring.
A Guy and His Chicks is cute to us because we know you (more or less) and know your products. However, besides sounding chauvinistic, the name could portray many types of businesses, some you wouldn't want to be associated with!

When I have to think of a name, a slogan, a logo, etc., the first thing I do is type a list of words. You've probably already done this to some extent, but list every word you can think of like chicken-related words, scenery, towns, colors, farm-related words, your name, quality-related words, etc. Then you can start cutting/copying/pasting to rearrange words in different combinations. You might notice words that begin with the same sound to form alliteration. Be clear about what your business is-- Poultry could mean that you process chickens, sell processed chickens, have a farm, etc. Are you going to be a hatchery? Check out other businesses on the Internet that are similar to yours to see both good and bad ideas.

Peaceful Walls ~ Thanks for posting all of the photos of your wonderful place and beautiful creatures! I still want to know why I am freezing in a winter wonderland and your photos taken today in northern Indiana look like a sunny September day! You have some happy looking chickens and alpacas.

JHNY - So good to see you you back on the thread! It just isn't the same without you. You were definitely missed. Glad you are feeling better.

Pipd - Sorry to hear about your beautiful Cricket. I know she was a favorite of yours abd her death was so sudden and unexpected.

I have been enjoying everyone's chickens-in-the-snow stories. Poor chooks! I sympathize with them for not wanting to put their naked chicken feet in the snow. Makes me think of the Poor Little Match Girl.

Speaking of fairy tales, have you seen Jan Brett's new version of Cinderella where the parts are all played by chickens? It is called Cinders and is well worth checking out with your child or grandchild. The artwork is just beautiful, like in all her books.

Quote: Yes - I know where foraker is.

On the Middlebury place, I'll have to go looking for it. I didn't know it existed either but was at a "show" and they had an exhibit there (I put show in quotes as it was a small, mostly Amish-attended show).

I asked them at their booth if they did organic but they said just the non-gmo.

I'll try to dig that up.

Hello. I pray you're not freezing in this ice box that just opened up on us! I am interested also in this topic of conversation so please keep me informed.
