INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Sad day here on the home front.

One of my RIRs died this morning.
hit.gif
She appeared to be peaceful in the nesting box with one of her BO sisters laying next to her.

She was very low in the pecking order and I fear the wetness, cold and lack of food in her system caused her demise. It is appropriately gloomy.

We are an hour away from you, but my DH could show you how to complete the processing once the weather warms up a touch. Another option might be to see if a local school wants a science project to learn about the egg laying process. Worst case there surely is a bio lab that would accept them for a highschool biology project. After all a chicken has to be better than a frog.

Hadn't even pondered the thought of the high school biology class as an option. Thanks ;-)

I've come across the opportunity to get one of my favorite chicken breeds and will be picking up a few varieties this coming weekend! Modern Game Bantams! I'm getting a pair of Birchens and a Trio of Blues. Once I get there I may also get a pair of Brown Reds! After trying earlier this year at obtaining this breed and it not working out makes me even more excited to get them!

So sorry. Always sad to lose one.

I had to make a "safe place" for the ones that are lower in order so they can get food while it's so cold and everyone is staying in. My lowest adult girl would stay on the roost and not come down while everyone is in so I try to be sure she gets some food away from the others. Sometimes I was just putting a plop of food right on the roost next to her so she could eat up there for awhile without being disturbed.

I do leave the door open so they can go out if they want, but when they had been staying in she was keeping away from everyone staying up on the roost.

My fodder grain arrived today! I went around looking for the tubs I thought I had and can't find them lol. I guess I'll just have to go out and pick up a few more.

they might be on sale after Christmas for packing up decorations and such.  Meijer almost always has a tub and storage sale the week after Christmas.
Good thinking! Thanks!

So I finally stopped by the local feed mill to see about feed prices. They only carry 2 formulas. A meat bird and a layer formula. The meat bird was a 21% protein called Pen Pals Meat Maker by ADM. Their layer formula is their own mix. I asked about protein and it only has 14%! Prices were ok, about the same as TSC, rural king, and big r. I opted to go with the meat bird and I'll supplement the calcium. And it was only $1.50 more a bag! I will have to see if they can custom mix and the price or order other ADM feed for me.

How much was the meat bird formula? I'm doing dumor starter/grower with supplemental calcium for all of my chickens. It's 15.99 a bag at TSC. It's cheaper than the layer and the chick starter though.
