INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

So after this last hatch of silkies, I wanted to find a cheap and easy way to identify the chicks. I thought about the spiral leg bands, but putting them on and taking off by myself seemed like a hassle when dealing with the little chicks. Then I reconsidered the zip ties, but I absolutely hated them the last time I used them. Too hard to get on and trying to get off with out cutting those wiggling legs was too stressful lol. I have been using vet wrap strips and using them, but they fall off after a couple days. Colored electrical tape just sounded too painful especially with feathered legs!

So I recalled seeing some rubber band type leg bands someone on BYC was selling. After sending them a message wanting to buy them, I started searching eBay and amazon to see if I could get a better deal. Come to find out, they are the latex bands used for orthodontia! I remembered those pain in the butt bands that I had to use that practically wired my mouth shut! They seem to be available in 3/16., 1/4, and 5/16 inch diameters. I bought 500 bands of the 1/4" in assorted colors for $7 shipped! Putting a rubber (well latex) band over the legs seemed about the easiest way to identify the chicks.

Here is a link of the ones I bought. Is it pathetic I'm excited about buying rubber bands lol

That is enough for 4 batches of the family choc chip cookie recipe. The recipe makes about 8 dozen cookies so you could have enough eggs for over 30 dozen cookies with 3 eggs to spare for breakfast or 3 loaves of bread.

Haven't been here for a bit, and I'm behind as usual. Talking about getting eggs in the subzero weather...here is my egg basket for the coldest day. Crazy girls. Though I should talk, yesterday I went on one of my one-mile walks. Just one though as I usually do it twice.

And a few of my front yard...

(Ignore the ugly power poles - someone had a trailer down there at one time.

Beginning of trail at the bottom of our front yard where I walk...and lost weight since I've been here!

Hey Brad, during your travel next weekend How close will you be to Lafayette If the weather is not too bad I may want to get some quail eggs..  If you will be on I65 near the SR 28 or SR38 exit I would love to get about 6 dozen. If not I will just wait and have you ship them when it is warmer outside. Also do you know anyone on this thread that has a different bloodline so I could get a second batch for males?
Hey I sent you a PM. As far as other members, I know Janet (jchny) has some from me, but not sure if she has out crossed or only has birds from my eggs.

Has anyone had issues with a beard on chick be too big? I have a chick that seems extra fluffy and his beard keeps getting stuck in his eye, causing them to become crusty and stuck shut. I've trimmed them and started some eye drops I got from the vet the last time I had this happen. I've only had this eye issue with silkies and seems like their beard is what's causing the eye irritation.

No such thing Brad;-) Just trim it, it is usually the beard and not the crest that interferes with vision and or irritates.

kabhyper1 and Brad....thought I'd post a couple of pics of a couple of gray chicks I'm growing out. The first one is incorrect as far as color but still very pretty I think. The second is a bit closer to standard.

And my other baby...

Chis and chickens!

Daddy checking out his son.

Haha. I agree. It is just the fluffiest little chick. Quickly becoming my favorite! I'll just keep it trimmed lol
Aww cute chicks and chih baby!

U can pluck the feathers under the eye to keep them from irritating too. I made the mistake as a newbie of trimming my girls' crests instead of their muffs under their eyes and now I'm waiting for them to grow back. :( I didn't go overboard, but I do miss those big pom poms.

Ohh those are beautiful! I love the chis as well.

So Chance found his crow today. He scared himself and the other chicks are huddled against the brooder staring at him like he is an alien. He sounds like a teeny bike horn. He is 14 weeks as of yesterday. He likes to watch tv with me stretched out on my lap . My roo Booker may have a lot of silver leakage in his blue, and missing one toe, but he makes pretty babies, almost all of them correct, and with amazing personalities. All of my boys so far are sweethearts.

After reading about 100 reviews on the incubator my parents got us for Christmas I am worried.. I have never incubated before this will be my first time.. I have a model 2200 farm innovators circulated air incubator, I also have the automatic egg turner and the Quail rails. All the knowledge I have is from what I read in reviews, and about 100 youtube videos. My plan so far is to unbox the incubator Monday morning and turn it on. I will try to have the temp stable at 99.5 and the humidity between 50 and 60.. I also plan to Buy a Digital thermometer/hydrometer to put in the incubator along with the ones that came with the incubator,( due to the amount of people on the reviews who says the supplied ones don't work)... If I get the eggs from brad and put them in when I get home. 14 days later I try and increase the humidity to 75 and set them out of the turner on the incubator Screen and remove the turner. Day 16 hatch?? Am I way off or do I have a good plan.
