INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I do really the blue laced red wyandotte and will probably be getting one. Do you like silver spangled Hamburg?

They won't fit in my flock well but they sure look dazzling. They are much smaller than my RIR so there could be rooster injuries to the hens. and their eggs are white and medium. I don't have a market for medium or white eggs yet. Also we have hawks around my house so I am trying to stick with larger or flighty chickens. Then DH and I process any chicken that does not get re-homed or has a cull-able defect.
The positives I noticed right off are the looks, the good forage abilities to keep food costs low, the combs look short but wide, the blue legs are smart looking too.

Keep those fingers crossed for me guys. This weekend is supposed to be hatching time for my broody. I am insane wanting to know if she has babies in those eggs. Tried to candle last weekend but could not tell.

Is there any hatchery/breeder you guys would recommend for when I get more chicks?

i may get eggs for Buckeyes if my hen goes broody again in the spring. when she went broody this fall i had found a Buckeye breeder in Indianapolis area but unfortunately, he didn't have any eggs or chicks available for sale at the moment but would in the spring. i like buckeyes as they were created by a woman and are cold hardy, good layers and pretty birds. they look a lot like RIR which i find to be very pretty birds and the commute to acquire them was easy as it's in my area:). i found him in the national buckeye club of american website of local breeders in my state so i'd recommend once you have selected your breeds then check out if that breed has a website club for that breed to find local breeders. http://www.americanbuckeyeclub.org/ good luck as there are too many gorgeous breeds available but not enough room for them all lol

What breed(s) are you looking for again?  Are you going to breed them or show them?

I like the heritage RIR best, but then there are the cream legbars and blue laced red wydottes.  And of course the blue sumatras are eye catching and useful as broodies.

All of that said, if you just want eggs, Ideal has a special every so often and their shipping is great.  Meyer has great red stars that will lay dark brown eggs.  Welps has nice assortments.  This time of year it may be more about availability than which hatchery.  Murray McMurray offers rare breeds.

As for finding a breeder, I recommend the breed threads on here or attending a show.

Mc Murray would be my suggestion as well. Love them.

Thanks for the advice. I will definitely look into the buckeyes.

So I was looking at Ideals breeds and noticed that their modern game bantams are already sold out till 2015! So on my most recent order, I asked them if any were available despite what their website said. They said that they weren't happy with any of their 2014 breeders, so decided not to offer them this year! I thought that was interesting that they would rather loose money and not offer them than to sell subpar birds. Of course they could have all gotten sick and died or something, but still thought that was interesting.

Glad to see there are Indiana BYCers here! :) How has everyone be doing with the cold? Total of 17 inches and slowly climbing here in the Fort Wayne area.
