INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Saw that I had some chick feed that I got from the people I bought my coop from. Now all I need is bedding and the chicks. Although I may add a hardware cloth window to look at my chicks through.

I went outside today and one of my OEGB pullets had a toe bleeding. She must of caught her toe nail on something, because her one toenail is much shorter than her others. I clotted it once (it was bleeding quite a bit) with flour.Put her back in her pen. Then though I would check on her before I went back inside (I was freezing my butt off!), there was a little drop of blood on her toe, so I wiped it off and clotted it again with flour. This time if clotted better. Chickens toe nails grow back right?

I was listening to K105 earlier and they said it suppose to get down to zero tonight with the wind chill making it feel even colder.

Joining late but I am from NW Indiana (Crawfordsville area) and have had our chicks just under a year now.  We are lvoing it and have to say we have learned a lot this winter about chickens and what they need during this time (I know we have had a bit more difficult winter than normal).  Glad I found you other IN chickens lovers :)

I'm an honorary Indiana BYCer, but wanted t welcome you to the thread. You'll meet lots of great knowledgeable people here. I have to warn you though...if you are a chicken addict this crew is a bunch of enablers!!! Careful or you'll become addicted too!!!

HRIR ROO NOT BRIR!! Auto correct strikes again!!!
Will be getting chicks in late February. I can't wait!!! Will be first time raising chicks. Finally got a good snowfall ( not thanks to global warming though as I think that is fake don't hate me) :)

I planted some trees in my front yard just in case it was real.  I just know my trees which are close to 10 yrs old will suck up all of the carbon and make great air for me.  Not really but they do get pretty red leaves in the fall.  And they like water so they are helping with our slow drainage issue in heave spring rains.  I need lots more though.  But the dry summers make it hard to plant young trees.  We lost 3 a couple years back.  I'm hoping  the roots cause the trees to pop up this year.  1 kind of almost came back last spring so maybe there is hope.

I'm getting in some BR chicks this Friday.  It is hard to pass up new chicks.   And of course I'm hatching in small quantities too.

Now for the question that will make many heads spin.  I have a BR laying hen and a RIR rooster.  Can I create a sex-linked (color coded) chick from them?  If so what will the rooster chicks and the pullet chicks look like or better yet how do I tell them apart?

If you check the pics I posted earlier, the second pic, in the foreground is a black Sexlink from a BR hen/BRIR roo. She is a great layer hasn't stopped all winter consistently on a daily basis ( light brwn egg)

I have chain link and like its strength for keeping out large predators (dogs and coyotes here mostly). The squares are big enough that a racoon arm could easily fit to reach in, so i worry that someone will accidentally get locked out and stay too close to the fence (I worry too much) and get grabbed. The large squares also let chicken heads poke through to eat the grass around the outside, which is fine except I have visions of a dog or fox coming along and grabbing one of those nibbling heads. I am going to put chicken wire along the inside once the weather is better to try to help back up the chain link and I think all my problems will be solved.

Uh, chicken wire is to keep chickens in, not predators out. Raccoons, foxes, dogs, can easily get thru chicken wire, I doubled our 2x4 fencing with 1/2'' square welded wire. Is your run secure from digging predators, also? I buried the welded wire/hardware cloth combination 2 feet out horizontally and up 2 feet, before just using the welded wire for the run.
All right, can't help myself...
Global warming is a term to categorize climate change. It means the weather becomes more erratic and sometimes extreme. More carbon in the atmosphere more green house gases, melting polar ice caps equals more snow. I won't explain the carbon record and how far out of whack we are according to that unless you really want me to. Rant over.

Hook, line and sunk!

Wondered who would say somethng, lol.

Global warming is surely happening, just look at all the ice melting compared to 75 years ago. If you look at proof in the geological records, they earth has been a LOT warmer in the past then it is now. But, then, there wasn't man around to terra-form it like we are doing now, and the plants grew and grew to knock it back down, 'eating' all the CO2 in the atmosphere and releasing O2.

Anyone know what is a whole lot worse than global warming? It's what all the scientists were convinced was happening in the mid-1970s, global cooling and a huge ice age they were certain was right around the corner.

The people that say we can do whatever we want with the earth's resources because in their religious beliefs the earth will be around for at least another 1007 years. Such a weak reason not to take care of what we have. After all, better care means a better earth then and now.

My run is entirely chain link (even on top) and is secure from digging predators. I lock them in at night, though, and would never depend on the run. The chicken wire is just going to be run on the inside to keep the chickens from sticking their heads and necks through the larger chain link squares - which to me seems like it is asking for a chicken head to be snatched from a chicken body. The chain link is what I am counting on to keep the raccoons, fox, coyote and dogs out.
