INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

M2H= thank you for the praises sometimes I do need a boost, cause I feel like I am not cut out for this cause I don't know as much as I feel I need to know. So thanks for that, the vet said that the old girls just were too old to deal with the cold we are having this winter, In. birds just aint used to it any more, but he said I do need to provide more fresh veg and fruit, so I am checking to see which are best and more cost effective due to having 30 birds. Now DH has went and hurt himself on the job and cant work for a while so I have to tighten things down allot. Worst winter ever!! Am more then ready to have it over.
I am trying to catch up on the thread and I'm only on pg 2067, now I got to stop and wake DH, help get him a bath dressed and to the doc. again today, so I will be even more behind..

I've wondered about using combination lockes for the nest boxes, we use the carabiners also. So far, so good. Fold out fake bushes, lol.

Morning everyone, cock-a-doodle do!

what are carabiners?
If it would warm up a bit outside I'd get some good carpentry therapy, I think!

I need that kind of therapy badly flock growing coop not...
YES! I havent done locks yet, but I need to. My DH insisted on these stupid things: http://www.lowes.com/pd_58432-37672-605320_0__?productId=4651573 I really dont trust them to keep coons out...

your link takes me to Lowes home page..??
racinchickins ~ That's what my German relatives do. When their clothes dry, they're like cardboard. I bet yours on your screen porch freeze stiff like cardboard.

pginsber ~ That's a great idea with benefits to the landowner, the air, and to chickens! It would especially be great for people on the thread like SallyinIndiana who have a lot of land. We have a really cool Japanese Maple that always has seedlings if anyone wants any. It will be several months, but I can dig them up and save them. I think it's a dwarf lace leaf variety. It's green in the summer and turns a beautiful orange in the fall. It grows in a canopy shape and the chickens LOVE to hang out under it like it's an umbrella. Here are some photos I found online. Mine isn't quite a dramatic as the tree photo (and not as tall), but it has a twisted trunk and is really cool looking.

Beautiful... I love them ( trees )

Maybe call around to some local grocery stores and ask if you can take their older produce that isn't fit to sell any more. Tell them it is for your chickens. I bet they throw out a lot of produce that would still be fit for the birds. Just a thought and it would be free!

I found the right person at Perdue to talk to this morning and left her a message. Unfortunately when I went to check on Lucy, it was too late. I'm hoping they can test her if it was just last night that she passed.

Weird... Works for me... Oh well, here's a picture!

Does anyone have any experience with these or know if by some magical possibility they are coon proof?

Love the woods, lovely picture!
I think the corner shelf is perfect for nestboxes!
Thank you. I love it here. I am iced in and hubby is parking at the bottom of the hill and hiking up and down to get to work, but it is so peaceful here. I love this place!

And the woods brought me a new visitor yesterday:

It's an Eastern Towhee. Not an uncommon bird, but a first for me.

When I get my chickens I will be running back and forth from front yard to back to watch all my flocks. ;)

Ugh me too! I am looking at it on my phone all the time.

I got a rough count today too...
I am around 90 on chickens, including chicks.
(Several are roosters that won't be staying)
My chicken numbers change weekly. Hard to keep track..
38 quail
5 turkey
3 peafowl
7 guinea
7 pekin
4 muscovy
1 oddball duck (my oldest pekin hen laid, possibly mallard cross?)
14 geese
I feel like I've forgot something...

OH EIEIOOOOOO!!!!!
Quail are *so* cute. Do you use or sell the eggs? I've seen them at the farmer's market, but never tried them.

How much room do they take up? Do they live separately from your hens?

Welcome!!

HA!  That was my same thought last week.  Brad is the worst.  He will tempt you to like all sorts of birds that might seem strange at first.  Pretty soon, you'll be trying to get some chicks.

So, I'm a little confused today.  Lucy is not doing any better today but is fine from the neck up.  Her comb is starting to fall over and its just so sad.  I called the vet again today and she got on the phone with me. She's still happy to see Lucy on Friday, but said my best bet is to take her to Perdue and have them test her because it will be significantly less expensive than the tests they run.  The kicker is that they will put her down first.  If I would have known that, I would have taken the roo there instead of having him put down by my friend.  They want me to put the whole flock down if its Marek's.  Now I know that this is the protocol, but I don't understand it.  If the rest aren't showing any signs and I'm not adding to the group, why do I need to put them down until or unless they show signs of illness?  And then what do I do.  I want chickens now and in the future, so if I take Lucy in for the good of the flock, how do I treat my property? I can't find explanations for that.   And I have read a million articles (it seems) and nothing explains why my one hen actually did recover after a long time.  Everything says it can happen, but not what happens if it does.  Its so defeating.

Cr, I am so sorry you are going through this. This is a hard one. Here are several links with lots of info, from people who do have md in their flock.

IMHO I would take Lucy to Purdue. They can guess all they want, but you need answers, not guesses. Once you get the answers as to what is wrong with Lucy then you can make an informed decision. It may be lots of things as there are many thing that mimick md. There seems to be no one thing with mericks, different areas have different strains. Then people knowingly/un-knowingly sell/trade/give away their birds and if you didn't know you had md you've now combined flocks and strains. So it is very confusing. Wild birds carry it, heck even carries on the wind in the chicken dander. Not really much you can do. But at the same time there is a lot to do.

I am sending prayers and good thoughts your way.

Yes I agree worst winter ever, so dang cold. This is my first winter with chickens outside too. We got them last January and they were in the house for ever it seemed. Now they are outside in the coup and it's crazy cold! Lots to learn for us new chicken owners. You might want to grow some fodder for you birds. I'm starting that when I get home (at my moms in Michigan ATM) so they can get some more greens. Dh got laid off Friday so me buying the extra veggies at the store for the chickens is done for now. Great idea on the store front with the old veggies (on my iPad, it didn't pull up the quote I think it was m2h suggestion. It was chick rookie who suggested, but still thanks to m2h for all you do). I will be doing that myself. And If I get something they shouldn't have off to the compost it goes. So win win IMHO. Thanks for the idea!

On to you dh. I am so sorry to hear he had an on the job injury. My dh did as well about 3 years ago. He was off work for a year and 10 months. He actually amputated His thumb. The company he was working for (nuclear plant in Michigan) took really good care of him once they found a hospital who would treat him. Being injured at a nuke plant scares a lot of people lol. They re attached his thumb, he lost the first joint so it doesn't bend anymore But he still has it and can still use it to some degree. Lots of therapy.

If there is anything I can help with, please just pm me. And I'm praying for a speedy recovery for your dh.

I am so sorry to hear she passed. Place her in a bag sealed. Grocery bag maybe and tie it up, place her in the fridge not the freezer. Purdue will still take her and test her. It needs to be done so you know how to proceed with you flock. They (the flock) may need meds, who knows at this point.

I'm looking for a link on how to package her up and send her via mail to Purdue, brb
