INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

That's unusual! Usually no one wants roos. Where did yours come from? Nene has the most personality, that's for sure. She moves at least twice as fast as the other hens. Really hyper, inquisitive, and she can be loud when begging. Nene is sweet to people and she's smart. She also gets distracted and wanders off-- she's the one who ended up across and down the street! Those RIR roos can get really big, but they are beautiful. Is that what your Red was?

Its from a member, was supposed to be a BR. It was almost white when it hatched.
I will take in pretty much any bird that needs a home. DH still says no emu tho

Red is a GLW, he is still here. I guess I waited him out long enough, he learned his manners.

close up

He is a real sweet guy now. will be 2 in march.

LOL I need newer pictures! I just realized how old those are!
Mildly aggressive roosters don't bother me at all. Red is really good to his girls.
And he will protect them! I am glad he behaves that way.
Its the ones that hurt the hens or other flock members that get tagged (red leg band).
If it continues as a pattern, then they are gone.
Rebel was a hard decision, but he was terrorizing the hens to the point they were cowering in the coop.
He had injured Red several times. Pecking the hens drawing blood was the last straw.
He went "away" with DHs best friend, I couldn't do it. I had grown very attached to him.
It was a real shame, he was very people friendly and social.

We will all benefit from Lucy's experience -- and yours!

I hope you still have all of the links and info. We need to include it on our Members Page where we have Health References & Links. When you get a chance, maybe you could forward the info to bradselig, and when he gets a change, he could add it if he doesn't mind.

When our son was at Purdue, we used to drive through those flat, open spaces that were treacherous during gusting winds, etc.

Speaking of my son, Max, (named after your terror -- lol) he recently began using local honey after I had read about that theory. I haven't heard about using UACV, but it seems to be good for about everything. I've heard that garlic is good for your immune system. I bought some chia seeds recently since they've been a health trend. I'll probably end up looking like a chia pet!
roll.png
At least honey, garlic, and vinegar should be safe. It seems like when something like chia seeds are touted as the next great thing, then a new study is released that says they cause a terrible side effect. I know that the media in general tends to misinterpret scientific studies and just focus on the sensational aspects.
chick rookie ~ I could never get it to work the way bradselig described, so I do it this way, which is the wrong way, but it works for me. I use "Quote" for the first one and then to add another quote, I click on "Multi" each time. When I click "Multi" then that quote moves to the top. If I don't want it at the top, I just cut and paste it where I want it.
Or sometimes I leave off the quote, like this:

leslea~ I quickly checked your links, and I am impressed! As you know, your niches of fantasy and romance are hugely popular. I like that your photo reflects each genre! When I have more time, I will look further into those sites.
I'd have a hard time waiting all the way until May, too. Why did you decide on a place that wouldn't have them until May? I don't mean to sound rude, I'm just being nosey because I know it's killing you to wait so long. Plus, we like to enable impulsive decisions! hahaha
will try that next time, thanks

yes, the mom Diana is a Red Pyle bantam. Dad, Harry is a Brown Red also bantam. They are sweethearts :love

A long time ago you said that is what our bantam roo is. While he's not my favorite bird, my kids adore him. He is really patient with them and let's them hold him a lot. He's the little guy in the middle.

Just out of curiosity, what do you keep geese for? Are they pets, egg layers, or food (sorry)? They are really pretty as is your barred glw roo. I love his coloring.
My son keeps asking me for ducks but I think that's not going to happen this year.

goatluver ~ When you're out with your animals notice everything about them and the surrounding environment while thinking of how they affect your senses.* Besides looking at colors and shapes, what do you hear and smell? What might you taste or your animals taste? Notice various textures that surround you. What patterns do they make? How do they feel when you touch them? What do they remind you of? What do you imagine that your animals are thinking or talking about to each other?

Note to members: I'm not referring to "common sense."

I'd love a maple too! I could trade wild dogwoods if anyone is interested. They have pretty white blooms.

I like your ideas for snow free areas. I can only imagine the look on dh's face if I asked for help with that. It might be worth it! I'm pretty sure he'd say something like isn't that what the run is for? I have a lot of extra rugs around for them to use. I would never have thought to make a game of hiding seeds though.

I pressed post a little too soon. Oops.

Dr. Sota left a general message and let me know the preliminary results but wanted me to call her back for the details. Because I didn't see it, I'm stuck until Monday. I did send her an email just in case she is working over the weekend.

The highlights were that Lucy had something that may be Marek's, she was fighting a bacterial infection, and she had parasites. OMG. I now feel like the worst chicken owner ever. To start backwards, as I don't know what kind of parasites yet so I don't know how to treat the others or even if I should try. Bacterial infection?? I'm not sure how they get those either but their coop is clean, dry, and I use the acv in their water always. Where does that come from and how do I help them?!?!? And then something that looks like Mareks??? Strangely I can handle this one better because we live in the woods and the kinds if wild birds around makes it seem reasonable. I can not wait to get the details so I can start being proactive with my little flock.

You would think that it should be simple. I made them a good home that is clean, roomy, good ventilation, not drafty, great food (as far as I know) and a dry wrapped run that should be predator free. I am constantly trying to improve on what we have done already so this should not have happened to her. I guess this is where experience comes in.

Mother2hens - Thanks for all the info! your chicks sleeping are so sweet and adorable.

Is anyone on this thread interested in photography (I'm better at it than writing). I do it every year for 4-H and will probably put some pics of my girls on it this year.
When I woke up this morning my dad told me snow blew into the bottom of my coop. Ahh!

More pics! My newest babies, hatched this last week: OEGB BR X GLW both chicks.... (My hen, Mabel & roo, Red) Note the white spot on the second chick.. Thats a boy! These are my "sexlink" chicks. BR hen x GLW rooster. My egg flock and scovies... Note the large barred rooster, thats what the little guy above will look like! He has the GLW comb. Was hurrying in to warm up but wanted to get his picture. Plan to get a better one once this awful cold is over!
Love OEGBs! They are the breed I would like to add if I was going to do anything besides the English Orps.

Quote:. My sister had to go on a week long trip for work and mom can only stay so long by herself. Meals, meds etc. As far as her health goes, all problems are kind of on hold as far as treatments go because she is on a downward spiral with her weight. Shes losing about a pound a week for the last 8 weeks. Which even for a healthy person is not great. But shes at 122 and should be at 135+. She can't eat enough in calories to sustain her normal daily body functions. She only taking in about 500-600 calories a day, anything more than that and she starts throwing up. Drs. are confused. Not sure why this is all happening. Shes got 2 more pounds to lose before they put her in the hospital for it. Still don't know what they can do for it. She cant eat any fats, nuts, grains etc, and one day a food is good for her and stays down the next day she eats it, it comes up. Its totally hit or miss. Some good days some bad. It seems like if it has a good calorie count, it comes up. Crazy.

DH therapy is done, he does do things on his own for it, but not much anymore, mostly when it hurts or stiffens in the palm joint. It is what it is, so he works with what he has. The surgeons who did his surgery were very surprised it worked. So happy in fact, that DH had all sorts of dr's coming to see his hand daily and record the progress. Even dr's that were not part of it lol. It was crazy. We finally had to get a Nurse rep from the insurance company to come visit because there were so many drs coming to see him they wanted to control who we got bills from. Drs. had to sign in to see him. Not sure what that was all about but it was crazy!

Well I got am unexpected day off from work! Came home last night around 8:30 to find my driveway starting to drift. I figured I could just gun it and do some drift busting. Not the case lol. I got stuck. After shoveling for another 30. Mins, I, able to finally get through.

I woke up this morning to find the last 10-15 ft of my drive with a 3-4 ft drift! I typically plow out my drive with a lawn tractor that has a plow on it. I didn't even try to plow it lol! Called dad and he came over. Here is the after pictures. My drive is only probably 30-40 ft long!

And here is the joy I get to go through everytime I have to go take care of the chickens in the coop! The front fence is 4ft and the drift is right up to it. I had to I out and around to shovel a path where the snow was only 2 ft deep.

I am soooooo done with this winter! It makes me wonder if having chickens is worth it lol. I know it will be much more enjoyable once we start getting warmer weather. I really wish I had a nice big barn!
