INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Whatever it is I want more! The feathers are very soft.
Really like this lil guy, super friendly, calm and just sweet.
My GLW have very stiff feathers. nothing like this. Lot like an orpingtons.
I think it is a RIR. I love chickens with soft feathers. My black rose comb pullet is actually a soft feathered chicken, I just like to sit there and rub her feathers lol. My white rocks, although they are actually hard feathered, have amazingly soft chest feathers. My young cockerel, loves to have his chest feathers rubbed.

I have cats and dogs, both of which I am greatly allergic to. I was also tested for *everything*, majority of which I am allergic to lol! You could even get a real kitten and throw it with the chickens, he would never know the difference!

Oh, boy. Now that's an idea...HA!

Well I got am unexpected day off from work! Came home last night around 8:30 to find my driveway starting to drift. I figured I could just gun it and do some drift busting. Not the case lol. I got stuck. After shoveling for another 30. Mins, I, able to finally get through.

I woke up this morning to find the last 10-15 ft of my drive with a 3-4 ft drift! I typically plow out my drive with a lawn tractor that has a plow on it. I didn't even try to plow it lol! Called dad and he came over. Here is the after pictures. My drive is only probably 30-40 ft long!

And here is the joy I get to go through everytime I have to go take care of the chickens in the coop! The front fence is 4ft and the drift is right up to it. I had to I out and around to shovel a path where the snow was only 2 ft deep.
Wow!

I pressed post a little too soon. Oops.

Dr. Sota left a general message and let me know the preliminary results but wanted me to call her back for the details. Because I didn't see it, I'm stuck until Monday. I did send her an email just in case she is working over the weekend.

The highlights were that Lucy had something that may be Marek's, she was fighting a bacterial infection, and she had parasites. OMG. I now feel like the worst chicken owner ever. To start backwards, as I don't know what kind of parasites yet so I don't know how to treat the others or even if I should try. Bacterial infection?? I'm not sure how they get those either but their coop is clean, dry, and I use the acv in their water always. Where does that come from and how do I help them?!?!? And then something that looks like Mareks??? Strangely I can handle this one better because we live in the woods and the kinds if wild birds around makes it seem reasonable. I can not wait to get the details so I can start being proactive with my little flock.

You would think that it should be simple. I made them a good home that is clean, roomy, good ventilation, not drafty, great food (as far as I know) and a dry wrapped run that should be predator free. I am constantly trying to improve on what we have done already so this should not have happened to her. I guess this is where experience comes in.

Don't blame yourself! Its surprising that parasites can get to them, but they do. Wild birds are usually the biggest cause. Thy can get in through some pretty tight spots. Thats why I am so paranoid over treating/worming.

Quote: Its a family tradition thing, and I just enjoy them very much. They are excellent watchdogs, VERY loud!
I sell eggs and goslings, I can't process them, they are a "pet" to me. I have ate goose before and do like it. Just not mine

The day may come, I just can't get past it yet. Same with my goats, although I hear its much like venison.

I am soooooo done with this winter! It makes me wonder if having chickens is worth it lol. I know it will be much more enjoyable once we start getting warmer weather. I really wish I had a nice big barn!

thats a lot of drifted snow! I think most of us are really fed up with this weather.
I know my poor birds sure are!!!!
Quote:. Wow thats awful for your mom! I hope they can determine whats going on.
I bet the cold is really uncomfortable for your DH too.
Mother2hens - Thanks for all the info! your chicks sleeping are so sweet and adorable.

Is anyone on this thread interested in photography (I'm better at it than writing). I do it every year for 4-H and will probably put some pics of my girls on it this year.
When I woke up this morning my dad told me snow blew into the bottom of my coop. Ahh!
Theres several members that do awesome pictures on here!

Oh, bless you! A new toy for me.

Your set-up looks idyllic. Like some of the awesome things I've seen on Pinterest.
Its really fun to use. I know most about flowers, so its nice to have this tool to help me decide how much I can plant, if I want to trade some for others, what can grow together, etc...It also saves money when I go to buy the stuff for planting as I tend to get too much. Its free for the first 30 days and then its about $25 per year, but it tells you what crops need rotated and I get a newsletter ever two weeks telling me what I need to get started, transplant, or pull.

I could get past it if there were only one thing, but knowing she had three different issues just sounds like I should have been better. Its not like she can tell me, so I should have figured it out. Now I need to get the details so I can learn to spot the signs of each. The MD or whatever it is, is pretty easy to spot now, but the rest I'm not sure about. I did notice that I have one bird with tarish kind of poo today when cleaning the poo boards, but it might be from the blueberries in their oatmeal yesterday.

I understand completely about not eating your own. That's pretty hard. I love lamb, but I'm not sure I could eat one of mine either.

Are there safe things to worm the group with? Their food has cayenne in it as does their oatmeal when I make it, but I don't know how effective it is. Someone said the other day that they give their chickens DE in their food and eat it themselves. I wonder what good that does for them or us. I have some but have never used it and it doesn't look especially delicious.
