INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Ok so i have this date ticker on my laptop of when my new BLRW chicks will be arriving...and my DBF noticed at the top of my tab bar just this evening. this is how it went:

DBF: "what's that?"
Me: (chicken ethusiast/lover)-- "it's a date ticker."
DBF: "what's happening on the 28th?"
ME: (i open the tab that the ticker is on an scroll up to the top where it reads: Baby Chicks Arrive)
DBF: laughing, laughing, and still more laughing
ME: WHAT!!!!????!!!! I only have four weeks to get my brooder ready!!!!!

my case and point...i really appreciate that i can get on here and know that i'm not the only one really excited about new baby chicks. so much so that i have a date ticker to tell how much time exactly i have to get ready for them. Some people just don't know how much we love our chickens, and some of them happen to be our SO!

Well, the good news here is that it was 55 and sunny today, so I spent five hours outside with the girls.  Unfortunately, it's supposed to be 3 degrees by morning! Plus 55 mph gusts and possibly snow. :(  I know you can't feel too sorry for me considering what you northerners are going through! :p

The bad news is that I think Adeline has vent prolapse! :(  She's been acting fine, but I knew that she's been laying elsewhere and I've looked around the past week, but haven't seen a stash. Luckily, right before they went in for the night, I checked under that same ornamental grass bush and found 7 of her eggs and 1 of Bonbon's. I've looked in that bush several times lately, but somehow missed seeing the eggs. Anyway, one of Adeline's had a smear of fresh blood. I knew she had laid today because when we were out in the back, she went into the fenced area and when she came out, she loudly sang the Egg Song (extended version!) Anyway, after I checked saw the eggs, I checked Adeline's vent and it looks like prolapse. :(  I'll take her to the vet tomorrow to be sure. I haven't noticed her or anyone having diarrhea, so I don't know exactly what has caused it. DH and I are getting ready to eat dinner (he's grilling out lol), so afterwards, I'll bring Adeline and Bonbon both in for the night before the arctic blast hits, and I'll give Adeline a bath and put some coconut oil on the area. Geez.  I am thankful that she's acted fine and had a great day. :)

Ok so fresh red blood on an egg indicates prolapsed vent???? I gathered two eggs in the past couple days with blood on them. How do I check for it and of course what's it look like? EGADS I've gotta check 17hens for it because I'm not sure which it is. On second thought 14 hens, the other three lay blue/green eggs.

Blood on the outside of an egg can just be from a hen popping a blood vessel when laying. Vent prolapse is when you can see "pink tissue protruding a little from the vent." That's what Adeline's looks like and it looks sore. Some causes are diarrhea, poor diet, obesity, or an infection. I don't think Adeline suffers from the first three possible causes, but I've been getting a large dog kennel outfitted with towels and paper towels, etc. to bring her and her buddy Bon-bon inside. I put it in an extra bedroom. I have to go get them now and give Adeline a clean-up followed by a soak followed by some soothing coconut oil on her sore vent. I'll call the vet tomorrow to confirm what's going on.

Holding your hen like this to examine the vent and wash the area has really been helpful:

You know, I have some theories on what causes prolapse.

But other than my own theories, every time I read the medical manuals regarding prolapse, they all mention light stimulation as a cause. From what I can gather, they mean using artificial lighting year-round to stimulate early (meaning when they're young) laying and prolonged laying rather than letting them have the natural cycles of the seasons. I had never noticed that before, but they all state that as a cause.

My theories on cause did not include that (but I think they're good)...

lol, I am excited for my chicks to arrive too! Trust me, if I knew how to set a date ticker I would!

I have a new runt now that I haven't been able to cull. I keep thinking I'll find it gone in the brooder box in the morning but it has made it a week so far. Its eyes don't look great and it is getting pasty rear. I know I should cull but ....
It is always hard to decide when to pull the cord with the runts. I have had a few, 1 or 2, make it, so that always gives me hope. I usually get attached to the underdogs. When the start lagging is when I really start to decide it is time to cull. I give them another few days to see if they were just having "one of those days". Hardly ever turns out to be the case, but it makes me feel as if it gives them a fighting chance.

The bad news is that I think Adeline has vent prolapse!

I hope she is feeling better soon!

This is during the 40F weather a couple weeks later.

Now it's cold again for these past couple of weeks. He is still looking good. No deterioration. No wetness. Eating, drinking and behaving normally.

I continue to watch.
He looks a little grumpy here. I guess I would too if I had frostbite! What kind is he? I really like his colors.

Here is crazy Cricket. He is really developing! His colors are something. :)
With mom lavender and sis Raven

Momma ( surrogate lol)

Love his coloration!

As school is delayed again tomorrow, my little girl will be missing preschool again, so we are taking a day trip to Bloomington!!! I'm pretty excited to be going. I'm hoping to find some Rooster Booster to give to the rest of my flock (as suggested here). Do any of you in the area know which store carries it? I tried Tractor Supply in Plainfield today and they did not.

On another good note (besides getting to go to Bloomington), I had another Cochin lay an egg today. That means I have 5 out of 7 hens laying now

. The other day I wrote that my cochin lays the prettiest white specked eggs and immediately read an article that says its because she has a problem with calcium. UGH! Seriously, can't it just be a pretty specked egg? I would really love to just enjoy the beauty of my girls eggs without worrying about every anomaly. Either way, this was an interesting article with pictures:https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/common-egg-quality-problems

I hope everyone has a good week!
