INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Mister is a Swedish Flower Hen. Now that's a strange thing, since he's a rooster.

CCCHICKENS ~ I don't still get allergy shots because I didn't feel like they helped-- and I had tried them off and on for long periods of time. Apparently, they work for some more than others. They've helped my son who is able to have the serum mailed to him, so he can give himself the injections. Just going to the doc's office and having to wait afterwards for 20 mins. was such a hassle. I've found (for an unknown reason) that my allergies have fluctuated since I was young. I'd go through several years of really bad allergies and then they'd improve for several years. I've had that happen with headaches and migraine headaches since I was young, too. Some years are way worse than others.

I was in the same boat as you Mother2Hens - I tried the allergy shots, repeatedly, for long periods of time and saw no improvement. Once I went on a gluten-free diet one of the things that cleared up was my constant sinus trouble and frequent sinus infections.

FALSE ALARM ~ So, I spent around two hours preparing a bedroom with the kennel cage, etc. etc. Thought of everything. It was perfect. I changed into an old (clean) sweatshirt to give Adeline her bath, etc. I brought her in and looked at her vent. LOOKED FINE. No prolapse, no redness. Good News! I trimmed some of her fluff and applied coconut oil anyway. Then I decided to go ahead and check Bonbon. She looked fine, but I trimmed a little hard poop of her fluff. I guess that's a downside of too much fluff. The poop under their perch looked fine. I'll certainly check them over tomorrow.
At least I got to see Daft Punk perform with Pharrell, Nile Rodgers, and Stevie Wonder on the Grammys.

CRSelvey ~ Bloomington has a new Rural King. I always suggest stopping in when my DH is driving, but he always misses the turn off! lol
Be careful driving if the school is delayed due to WEATHER!

SallyinIndiana ~ I was just teasing you about being surrounded by granola types-- I've seen die-hard granola types succumb to donuts!
HouseKat ~ Luckily my allergies haven't been as bad as they've been during some periods of my life. When my son still lived here, he tried a gluten-free diet for sinus problems (2 surgeries), so DH and I were on the diet, too. We followed all of the rules, but after two months, none of us felt any different in general. I know people who have really been helped by that diet while others aren't affected. I'm glad it worked for you! Btw, did you get your shed/coop?

That's a relief about Adeline! I will be careful. I think they just don't want kids walking to school when its so cold. I say that now, but the wind just kicked in and its a little nerve-wracking living in the woods when that happens! I will definitely check out the RK as long as I get there. I also know there is an Orschelins (sp?) on the way from my house, but my DH always seems to miss the stop too!!

<- That's what he looks like when it happens.

Well, the good news here is that it was 55 and sunny today, so I spent five hours outside with the girls.

Unfortunately, it's supposed to be 3 degrees by morning! Plus 55 mph gusts and possibly snow.

I know you can't feel too sorry for me considering what you northerners are going through!

The bad news is that I think Adeline has vent prolapse!

She's been acting fine, but I knew that she's been laying elsewhere and I've looked around the past week, but haven't seen a stash. Luckily, right before they went in for the night, I checked under that same ornamental grass bush and found 7 of her eggs and 1 of Bonbon's. I've looked in that bush several times lately, but somehow missed seeing the eggs. Anyway, one of Adeline's had a smear of fresh blood. I knew she had laid today because when we were out in the back, she went into the fenced area and when she came out, she loudly sang the Egg Song (extended version!) Anyway, after I checked saw the eggs, I checked Adeline's vent and it looks like prolapse.

I'll take her to the vet tomorrow to be sure. I haven't noticed her or anyone having diarrhea, so I don't know exactly what has caused it. DH and I are getting ready to eat dinner (he's grilling out lol), so afterwards, I'll bring Adeline and Bonbon both in for the night before the arctic blast hits, and I'll give Adeline a bath and put some coconut oil on the area. Geez.

I am thankful that she's acted fine and had a great day.

I also enjoyed some time out with my girls today and I actually managed to get four of the six in the "tent" before leaving for work this evening. (Usually the four EEs want to roost in the tree so I can only get the two BAs in the tent for the night.) I am concerned about the other two, but they have stayed in the tree through similar nights in the past, so I'm trying not to worry too much.

The bad weather has delayed my yard barn and I can't get them to give me a new date of when it will be set up.

For some reason when I searched articles on speckled eggs, I ended up finding an article written by pipd about her girl Frou-Frou. It was a good read in case you haven't seen it.

CRSelvey ~ Thanks for posting this! By the time I'm reading/posting on the Indiana Thread, I never take time to look elsewhere.

Pipd ~ This is a wonderful story! So endearing and well-written. I'm glad that Frou-Frou has brought you such joie de vivre!

It reminded me of my big Jersey girl -- she knew her name and we communicated.

Oh my gosh! -- for both things -- your chickens and the yard barn company! I know someone who has a coop (around the size of mine) for sale at a very reasonable price, so PM me if you are interested.

Im
I'm really sorry.
I'm sorry too it sucks I know. and I quoted the wrong one but you know what I'm talking about.

Ok so i have this date ticker on my laptop of when my new BLRW chicks will be arriving...and my DBF noticed at the top of my tab bar just this evening. this is how it went:

DBF: "what's that?"
Me: (chicken ethusiast/lover)-- "it's a date ticker."
DBF: "what's happening on the 28th?"
ME: (i open the tab that the ticker is on an scroll up to the top where it reads: Baby Chicks Arrive)
DBF: laughing, laughing, and still more laughing
ME: WHAT!!!!????!!!! I only have four weeks to get my brooder ready!!!!!

my case and point...i really appreciate that i can get on here and know that i'm not the only one really excited about new baby chicks. so much so that i have a date ticker to tell how much time exactly i have to get ready for them. Some people just don't know how much we love our chickens, and some of them happen to be our SO!

anyone out there live near a Krispy Creme place and want to bring me some donuts?
I heard that some new place ( cant remember the name ) that will go get what you want and then deliver it to you....

It started snowing a little bit ago. At least a 1/4 an inch in 30 mins. The roads aren't very good and people aren't learning to drive an better lol. My dad got in a wreck, well it guess it is yesterday now. A guy didnt stop, not because he slid, but because he wasn't paying attention. Bent the crap out of the passenger side, infront of the wheel, bent the rim, truck now needs to be realined. Then he borrowed his girlfriends van and someone backed into! Once again, not because it is slick but people dont know how to drive. The van was parked and no one was in it. Will get a new bumper. No one got hurt though, I bet they will say his 83 ford ranger is totaled, but I'm sure he will get it realined and drive it anyways. As far chickens, no one it froze yet. They are all fluffed up keeping warm, they have now also figured out another purpose of the buddy system. To stay warm!

I am so sorry your Dad has to deal with that! glad no one was hurt. You are right, and its because so many are in such a rush these days.
My son in Tell City has lost 2 trucks that were legally parked, same exact situation.
I know I make people mad but I slow down a little when roads are slick. Intersections and stops are much worse!
Most people up north in the lake effect area slow down, lot less wrecks that way. at least when I lived up there lol!
We are getting the temp plunge and high wind now. Ugh.. come on spring!
Woke up to about 12 chicks out! A lot of blues with this batch! I think almost half that have hatched are blue!
WOOOOHOOO! congrats!

I have an ISA pullet laying a pretty dark brown egg.

Is it her first?

Well, I lost my first adult chicken last night. When I went out this morning, my Jersey Giant was laying under her perch on the ground. Not sure why. She was near the bottom of the pecking order, and never really reached a large size. She was about 9months and I believe never laid an egg. I'll keep an eye on the rest of the flock for anything out of the ordinary. I wasn't as attached as some on here, but it still sucks to lose one. I will replace her though, JGs have always fascinated me. I will try to find a true giant line this time.

Sometimes its something internal, and you will just never know why.
Her size and development tells me that may have been the case too.
JG's are a very slow maturing bird, and am betting a heritage bred will be slower yet.
I have had some outwardly vibrant healthy birds do that same thing. Most recent was my only Brown Chinese hen WeeWee.
She was a true pet. That was a very painful, heartbreaking loss to the entire family. I still have no clue why.
