INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Loved your pictures!

Thank you. She was just precious. I think she had internal problems but do not have a clue what happened.
No impaction in her crop. No sign of anything wrong. Just gone

I have kept a lot of geese. She was just unmistakably precious..
She will be remembered and missed horribly.

Paddy passed away the same day. We do not know why but the 2 always stayed together.
I suspect both had got into something bad, a plant? Paddy was our first gosling hatched.
This all happened while I was ill from the cows.
Painful experience for all of us as the 2 were probably the most loved here!
Its taken me this long to even talk about them. My WeeWee was a true pet.
Geese are not nearly as messy as ducks, and definitley eat less.
We are debating the pekin, very high feed volume with them!
They are enjoyable and so funny to watch. But costs need to be compared...
I may not have them much longer.

sorry for your loss, they are pretty, I don't know anything about them, I thought about trying a couple but I dont have a place they can swim and hunt for food.
I am so sorry your Dad has to deal with that! glad no one was hurt. You are right, and its because so many are in such a rush these days.
My son in Tell City has lost 2 trucks that were legally parked, same exact situation.
I know I make people mad but I slow down a little when roads are slick. Intersections and stops are much worse!
Most people up north in the lake effect area slow down, lot less wrecks that way. at least when I lived up there lol!
We are getting the temp plunge and high wind now. Ugh.. come on spring!
WOOOOHOOO! congrats!

Is it her first?

Sometimes its something internal, and you will just never know why.
Her size and development tells me that may have been the case too.
JG's are a very slow maturing bird, and am betting a heritage bred will be slower yet.
I have had some outwardly vibrant healthy birds do that same thing. Most recent was my only Brown Chinese hen WeeWee.
She was a true pet. That was a very painful, heartbreaking loss to the entire family. I still have no clue why.
ok another one of my questions, I've wanted to ask several times but just never got around to it, what is the difference between heritage breed and other chickens?
M2H - Glad you had a false alarm and you or no one has to thank me for pic's... I love taking them and shearing them too...
Jchny2000- and all the others just in case I miss ya, glad ya'll enjoyed the pic's... I aim to please!!! Just don't tell DH, he wont believe ya... lol
I enjoyed spending time with my girls and having the chance to take pic's on a beautiful day... now I just wish for more of them, cant wait till spring!!!!

I have 12 that are coming into lay right now and I've gotten this color egg three days in a row now. It could be one girl or three different ones who knows. Wish I had a camera in my coop!

Now the Dominiques I would like to try. I'm kind of interested in the comb crossing since I could use more rose combs or shorter combs in my layer flock. I'll have to wait on those to start laying and get past the pullet stage, most likely I try setting eggs in April. I have lots of wishes for setting in April, these sex linked, some BLRW, the HRIR, maybe a few sumatras, and of course just standard barnyard mixes using my red stars. My roosters are going to be busy and rotating quite a bit.

I want to try Dominiques also at some point. They are beautiful and rose combs sound so nice about now!!!
Joining late but I am from NW Indiana (Crawfordsville area) and have had our chicks just under a year now. We are lvoing it and have to say we have learned a lot this winter about chickens and what they need during this time (I know we have had a bit more difficult winter than normal). Glad I found you other IN chickens lovers :)
There is never a late join for someplace this interesting!!! welcome!

How is everyone fairing?!?!
I lost my first bird to the cold. A white silkie. She was all curled up in a ball next to the roost, literally looked like she was asleep.
:(
I'm having the worst luck with Silkies, she makes my third loss... I still have a blue left.
I went ahead and brought the whole flock into the basement. When I gathered them all up, I noticed she(the silkie) felt very skinny. I have been giving them extra corn and the silkies have been going out to the feeder, even while the rest of the birds won't leave the coop. I should have noticed sooner, but it's so cold out there Im not spending much time with the flock. I don't think they were fully integrated into the group. Argh, this weather! I am not as ready for winter as I thought I'd be. Last time we had subzero temps, their heated bucket froze, so I brought them in. I just don't have the ability to go out there multiple times to keep refreshing the water.
*le sigh*

Sorry for your loss,I have 2 silkie chicks ( know nothing about the breed ) I have heard from locals, that I need to keep them in the house in winter. I am researching that cause I just don't have a way to do that and I don't want to get rid of them.
This winter has been hard on everyone, I know I have had real bad luck, frostbite and 3 deaths, and now I got the poopies going around, IDK just want winter over, so I for am feeling your pain.

Thanks. Thar stinks that he lost 2 trucks to that! The guy that backed into the vehicle was parked at least 7 feet away from him, I am guessing 10. Why do you even need to back up that far? he had plenty of room to pull out. Some people here drive smart, but a lot are completley the opposite. Especially if they have a plow on there truck they seem to think, that then it is okay to go 50. And I amiun northern Indiana

Hi All,

I have a quick question. Lucy was in the mudroom and well away from the other chickens, but I had a brand new bag of wood shavings in the mudroom too. Should I get rid of the bag since her dander could be in there, or does it matter since she started being ill around the other chickens already?

Also, I tried calling Perdue, but all the people who can translate the report for me are in a meeting or out today.

I'm just sitting here biding my time waiting for an answer since my little girl just wasn't up for a trip to Bloomington today.

I would go ahead and just not use. Just incase you got her away before the others were exposed. I would rather waste $5 and throw it away. Becuase I know me, I would worry I gave it to them even if they already had it.
