!
Pekin drakes are raspy, so its not as bad. The peafowl will be much worse when they get an adult voice tho.
Scovies are a common wild South American breed. And not a true "duck" but actually more of a cousin.
Kinda like a donkey and horse... So I keep them separated from the other ducks and in the "egg coop" because they fly.
The offspring are "mules" and are sterile if crossed with other duck breeds. Scovies take at least 35 days to hatch, its not easy!
I won't eat our babies, but the meat is compared to veal, nothing like regular duck.
We are ordering the white variety for our freezer, they are a hybrid like cornish cross, If i can come to terms with the idea.
They are the birds I will bring into the porch if the weather is below -0- temps..and my peas.
My scovies have the red caruncles now, but they were only a 5 months old in the pic. I saw how old the picture is..11/2012 EEK!
The girls have very little, just the knob on the bill is red. Stanley's face is very red and bumpy. I'll get new pics, its very cute on my girls!

Quote: She is very, very cute. She is saying, nudge, nudge "PLEASE throw my ball, come on, puleeeease just 1 more time!"
I am still thinking about her! Love her eyes and coat color.
Its a very fun active breed, but small enough she wouldn't be a danger to my parents.
I always worry about dogs knocking Dad down, he will not leave them be!
That why we had to rehome Sam, our english mastiff. Really miss him

There is rarely babies or little kids here, so I think she may work.. Dunno.
I may call tomorrow.
jchny~ I think you mentioned having a friend in Australia. I ran across these photos of an Australian Brush Turkey chick and a young turkey recently when I was looking for something else. The chick is so cute and fuzzy!

I love the shape and clean lines of this older one.
WOW thats a cool looking bird! I will have to email Darren and ask him.
Looks like a small breed too! He keeps ducks and is bird crazy like all of us

jchny ~ I don't mean to be an enabler -- BUT . . . that dog is adorable. It looks like it came from a good home and at 1.5 years old, I'd think she could be trained. Plus, you wouldn't have to deal with the downside of a puppy-- the constant care, potty-training, teething, jumping on your parents, etc. It looks like a nice size, too, not too big or too small. You dad sounds about like mine lol. He thinks a good cat is one that sleeps all day and doesn't like attention. I agree with jchny2000, you should get a moscovy duck. Iwould get two though. Very few birds are solitary, must want companions (outside of a human). Although I did like my call ducks, I wouldn't get those as a pet. They like to fly all over the place and are pretty high strung, extremely loud too. But they are not messy. And they don't take up as much room.

That looks like an Australian Cattle Dog. If so you really don't want a puppy. 1.5 years old is perfect. They don't grow their brains until they are 4 years old.

All my dogs are great with my goats and chickens. The Lab was 3 or 4 when we got her, the Shepherd was 2. I like getting older dogs because you can tell quickly what their personality and train-ability are. With a puppy it is a huge gamble.

I'm so glad you said that.

I've long considered trying to find an adult dog that could run with the chickens and not attack them. I want it as a guardian/predator deterrent. Most people say you have to raise them with the livestock from birth.
