INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I was just wondering the same thing... And curious if Indy has a Big R. Lol that would save me some money if there's one around Indy and the sale was going on while I was in the area (around the 19th).

I think the closest Big R to Indy is out in Crawfordsville. I wish there was one around though.

Ewww babies!!!! Don't forget t post pics! Good luck!

My eggs went into lockdown last night, they are due to hatch Saturday. I started with a dozen, had to pitch one that started stinking a few days ago. I know when I candled them at day 14 there was development in most all the eggs from what I could tell, but I'm not experienced at it yet.

When I took the auto turner out I definitely heard peeping coming from one egg. I had a bit of trouble getting the temp evened back out (it was a few degrees low for a couple hours) but it finally settled.

I just checked them again and the egg that was making noise yesterday has already pipped. I'm surprised, it's two days early. Hope he/she makes it out by morning.
The turner motor generates heat. Not clearly written on the turner package but it should be.

...I'll be heading to Indiana on the 19th to pick up my Hortsman order (either from Brad or Lilmizcareall) but have to hurry back because they are supposed t go into lockdown that evening (I think). By then I will know how many viable ones I have. ....
I have found that lockdown can vary. If the eggs are developing a bit slow I wait a day to lockdown. Some posters on another thread wait till they see an internal pip. For me that is at least another day. Just in case you decide you want to take the scenic way back home.

Guys, Jumping on here really quick, my big brother Jack had a heart attack today. Open heart is scheduled tomorrow at noon, triple bypass.
Please keep him in your thoughts.. He has a heart of gold, and would do anything for anyone. will catch up once things settle down here

Wishing him the best! I'm sure he will be just fine.

My diagnosis (haha) is that it's typical allergic dermatitis. Your post about the rash didn't sound familiar at first, but when I saw the photo you posted, I had some flashbacks of one of our former cats, a female tuxedo cat who had a rash like that. The vet treated it with a steroid injection. Hope that's all it is.

About the dust problems in your coop, you might notice a few Feather Dusters walking around that you could use.

About filtering sand, re-purpose your Gold Pans! I mean, you're from California, so surely you have some, Shirley!

If not, here's ordering info:

About the seeds: Everytime I need to ask DH what he planted in the grazing frames (that still grows outside despite the weather), he has gone to bed.

I have bad roo luck with cochins (although they are so sweet I can't entirely be mad about it).

I just placed an order for Bielefelders and Blue Isbars! They will be coming in March and they will be my first possible breeding endeavor! I've done a ton of research on them and can't wait!

Bielefelders have been called the “über chicken” due to their German engineering. Bielefelder chickens sport many desirable features such as being very docile, a dual purpose breed and auto sexing. The dual purpose comes from their large size and their egg laying production. The Bielefelder hens lay upwards of 200 eggs per year. Bielefelder roosters have a claimed weight of 10-12 pounds. They are not flighty and welcome human interaction. Even to the point of being jealous of attention from children.

Blue Isbar!

The Isbar is a cold-hardy breed which produces 150 to 200 eggs per year that come in a variety of shades of solid green or spotted green. The Isbar is the only green-egg-laying single combed chicken breed in the world today. The most beautiful and sought after variety of Isbar is the Blue Isbar, of which there are fewer than one hundred remaining in the world.
Chick Crazed ~ Wow! Both breeds look wonderful! It will be fun to hear about your experiences with them.

That's really cool that you are getting Isbar chicks. I am getting Isbar chicks this spring as well. I am also getting Breda chicks at the same time. Breda fowl come in Black Blue and Splash here in the states, are bred to the Standard for the Netherlands. They were in this country at some point in time known as Guelder Fowl. They have feathered legs, vulture hocks and no combs. I don't know how to include pictures from the internet but mine are coming from Walt's Ark If you go to there website you can see what they look like. Along with these 2 breeds I am getting Coronation, Light, Silver Sussex and Swedish Flower Hens from them. Also from 2 other breeders I have Silver Penciled, Partridge Rocks, Red and Silver-Gray Dorking, Bue Orpington, RC Rhode Island Red, Sliver Laced Wyandotte, Buckeye and German New Hampshire. I am also contemplating on trying to get someone to hatch some eggs from Urch/Turnlund's for me.
barb s ~ My gosh! You're kinda reminding me of bradselig. lol You are going to be busy keeping track of all of those breeds-- it would be a dream come true for most of us!

I picked up this silly magnet, from a local artist, down in Nola. Its been on my fridge for years and today I looked at it and saw it in a slightly different light. It also made me think about all this culling talk we've been having! Anyways, I think all sides will get a kick out of this.

My DH is a Pescatarian, but I am full omnivore. I don't plan on eating my chickens, but I'm not against it either. That's all I have to say about that subject...
I love how everyone here has different husbandry practices, but respects each other. Kudos, keep up all the thoughtfully written advice and remember if chickens were bigger than humans, they wouldn't hesitant to turn us into a meal.
lilmizscareall~ Haha Funny magnet! I've tried being a vegetarian before-- several times. I don't particularly like meat, but I found that when I didn't eat it, I felt hungrier and was more prone to having headaches. I researched about the proper combinations for complete proteins and all of that, but I couldn't stick with it. If I were wealthy and had a personal dietitian/chef to create interesting meals, I could do it!

I could not kill any animal-- not even a cute little mouse. I couldn't because I was not brought up around farm animals or hunters or guns. However, I admire those who can process their own animals in order to ensure healthful food, while not supporting mass production livestock industries. And I understand the need for humane hunting of over-populated animals.
As far as killing-- Flies are a different story!

For people who fee there chickens oatmeal, do you usually feed it cooked or uncooked? I was thinking I was going to feed it to them cooked, but I have seen it done bothe ways so I thought I would ask opinions.
CCCHICKENS~ I first tried it non-cooked by putting in with the "granola mix" I made for my hens, which includes sunflower kernels, chopped nuts, stuff like that. They left the oatmeal on the plate.
roll.png
On one of our cold winter days, I made cooked, warm oatmeal for them. I thought it would be such a treat, but they did not think it was worth having the sticky stuff on their beaks!
roll.png
I told them that there were starving chickens somewhere that would love having Quaker Oats!

kabhyper ~ Glad you called an avian vet and found out some good info! Keep an eye on your Silkie!

Good Luck on your hatching~ minmin, wheezy, and raisinemright !!!! (and to all the others who I failed to mention!)

When I went to sleep last night a second egg had pipped. By this morning those two have hatched. They are still drying off, taking turns trying to walk and playing soccer with the other eggs. It looks to me like one more egg has pipped. I have to be out of town all day today but we'll see what progress they've made by tonight.
