INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

The RIR we hatched via broody early October is kind of skittish. All the other girls are curious about everything and tolerate being petted. Annie, the 4 month old RIR, seems to honk instead of cheep.
Does anybody else have a pullet that honks? Does it seem odd?
pginsber ~ About your honking RIR pullet video ~ To me, it doesn't sound like honking because my Eng. Jubilee Orp. honks loudly. Yours sounds more muffled to me like she has a sore throat or something. I hope others have some opinions because that's interesting (and odd).
Leahs Mom and CCCHICKENS- watch pginsber's video because it's not a honk like we're used to.

Your mealworm story made me laugh. We get shipments of 5000 mealworms for our various birds. Unfortunately, one of our shipments arrived during the polar vortex and even though we got the box into the house instantly upon arrival, most of the critters were not moving. The Robin we feed turned her nose up at the dead worms, but the hens LOVED them!
pginsber ~ Wow! Where do you order them? jchny raises them, but the thought of them turning into creepy black beetles is too much for me! I used to buy them for our former bearded dragons and they were always larger sized. The ones I bought are ridiculously small. They were from a local pet food store, not a chain, but still were a rip-off!

I want to apologize to everyone that has sent me info to update on the members page. I have not forgotten to do it, my current computer keeps freezing up when I try to do anything on it. It is old and outdated. The good news is I will likely be getting a new one tomorrow! So if anyone needs anything changed on the members list or you would like to be added and haven't sent me your info let, please let me know!
bradselig ~ Well, I don't understand why you can't keep up with your unpaid Indiana thread duties while working full time at Lowe's and raising 44 breeds of chickens in a polar vortex!

pginsber ~ Just noticed in a post that: We use Petco.com and get 5000 large for $37.
That's a great deal! So they don't come with dirt or something since they're (supposed to be) alive? Do you store them in the frig?
I was looking online at vintage valentines and thought this one was very insulting! (to an old hen like me)

This one is pretty strange:

Been curious if anyone near the Terre Haute, IN area knows of people who process meat birds for a decent price. I heard there are some amish families near me but never been able to get any contact info for anyone. I have been debating raising my own meat birds just not real big into processing them myself. After deer season and the fish I catch and clean I have had my fill of cleaning and processing animals. Any info would be great.

Hum I wonder if landscaping rocks would work? Or would they be to big? I've just been carring water out several times a day because I'm home but it would be nice to do something different next year! I bought a fish tank heater but it doesn't work with my setup. I have a five gal bucket with a lid and a small hole in the side then the bucket sits in an oil pan.
My rocks are probably an inch or two big. I just tried to make them as level as possible across the top and about maybe an inch from the top. I wanted to make sure the pie pan sat down in the bowl submerged in the water. It's worked well for us.

I have a girl that sounds kinda like that, too.

Happy Valentine's Day Indiana Thread! (despite the Winter Weather Advisory!)

Here's a few more for laughs . . .

I love the old valentines. What's sold in the stores today just can't compare with the fun vintage ones! Thanks for finding & posting them

The mealworms are delivered in a cardboard box which contains a smaller box inside. The smaller box contains 2 fiberboard egg cartons, a potato, and (usually) throngs if wriggling, crawling, golden segmented bodies.
I transfer them to a plastic shoe box with wheat bran and carrot, and keep them in the garage. They last us about 7 weeks.

I got my shipment in. I had added the assorted over hatch special. I now have a few NN. I don't know why but I did not even think of them being in the assortment. DH always pokes fun at the NN chickens. I wonder what he will say now. The children have not seen our NN chicks yet. It should be interesting.
