pginsber ~ Wow! Where do you order them? jchny raises them, but the thought of them turning into creepy black beetles is too much for me! I used to buy them for our former bearded dragons and they were always larger sized. The ones I bought are ridiculously small. They were from a local pet food store, not a chain, but still were a rip-off!

bradselig ~ Well, I don't understand why you can't keep up with your unpaid Indiana thread duties while working full time at Lowe's and raising 44 breeds of chickens in a polar vortex!

I did watch the video,but I didn't hear anything that sounded like a honk. All I heard was 1 chicken carrying on the whole time, and it didn't sound like a honk at all. My chinese water dragon always loved when I forgot about his meal worms and they turned into beetles. I guess to him they tasted so much better after they transformed into the nasty little beetles.

Didn't sound too "honk-like" to me either. Sounded like my young pullets sound when their voice is changing from peep to adult language.

I got my shipment in. I had added the assorted over hatch special. I now have a few NN. I don't know why but I did not even think of them being in the assortment. DH always pokes fun at the NN chickens. I wonder what he will say now. The children have not seen our NN chicks yet. It should be interesting.

I bet they will love them. What else was in the order?

That is funny! I didn't even consider it but I no longer have a tractor and they haven't learned the "sit stay" command.  LOL  The area is also in the "dog zone" where I am working really hard not to encourage the chickens to go.  I already had one suicide with a welsummer that flew the fence  My four dogs were not brought up with chickens and go into "pack mentality" that will not end well no matter how trainable a couple of them are (the cattle dog/lab mix is 100% untrainable).  The cardboard is a good idea, but I'll have to bite the bullet and build the raised bed to do that.  I thought about putting tarps down and piling weight on them, i feel like the weight and lack of any sun kills grass pretty quick. Maybe I'll try that and if it doesn't work i can get materials and try the cardboard with the raised beds.  It stinks!  I was hoping to have my bee hives built this winter but my truck got snowed in the first week in January and has yet to be uncovered fully (really big drifts here).  To be honest I probably would have wussed out with this cold anyway since my garage is not insulated.

I don't know why you can't get them to sit, I trained mine in 5 minutes . Still teasing!

Yes Snow has improved. In her defense, I probably didn't give her a good enough chance to be a good mother the last time. She is doing really well this time.

LOL for July I have 300 feet of privacy fence to stain and gutters/rain barrels to design and install by the coop! As well as anything else I come up with by then!    I also have to spread river rock around the coop sometime this year.  I like your ideas.  I am going to try the black plastic idea with some weight on it to hurry the process along.  As soon as the ground is clear I will get out there and do it.  I really wish I had had time last fall!  Boo for not planning ahead!

I need a vacation from reading your plans.

it took some searching but found the closest video of how we do our beds. We really love it. Everything does great and you can make them as long as you want but only 4' wide to make sure you can reach to the center without walking on it. Keep in mind we didn't have to use near the material but it's great for not wanting to have to do any digging or sod removal and we plant in it as soon as we're done building it! Not raised so to speak and no building. We have 6 or 7 of these 4' wide by 15' long and they go in different directions outlining the garden area.

DH had his surgery today and while on the table his blood pressure spiked, got that under control then his heart rate drooped to 39.. not good. they cant get him stable so he is still in the hospital.  I am beat and cant sleep worrying about him of course, so here I sit on the computer at 11 pm. All my critters are mad at me... they didn't get feed till 10 pm. the chickens had to put themselves to bed, and the dogs had a field day in my house....  actually took me 30 min. to get the mess cleaned up...

DH rate is ok when he is awake but drops when he is asleep,they think it is the combination of the drugs they gave him for his blood pressure spike and the anesthesia, so they are HOPING it wares off by morning and he can come home maybe fri.  my son is going to come stay with  the critters tomorrow but he has to work Friday, he is a great help cause he was raised by me ... so he knows how to tend the critters. I just got off the phone with the nurse and she said she would call me if he needs anything so I am going to try and get some sleep, thanks all for the kind words and concern. Good night hope tomorrow brings better news for all not just me.

We are getting close too!

So I was just out in the coop taking a big bag of veggies to the crew for a treat when Peanut Butter attacked me again. He's the roo on my avatar and I kept him because he was so sweet. Now he's close to a year and just getting to be mean. I picked him up by his tail, turned him over on his back and cradled him for a couple of minutes talking nicely about this and that (mostly how I have raised him and nursed him and freezer camp) and for my trouble, he bit me. I think he understood the part about freezer camp. I love having a rooster but what are the odds he will settle down? If he attacks my 4 year old again I'm not sure we can keep working with him.
