INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Ok need a little help.. Remember I am new to incubating. So I have 9 Dark brown Maran eggs that have been in a incubator for 7 days today. My daughter and I just candled them. What we seen was different than the first day. the eggs are filling up with a dark area taking over just about half the egg from the top area leaving the bottom and the air sack a lighter color. is this normal? Every egg had this change going on. We also seen two eggs that were moving inside the dark mass towards the top of the mass. Am I crazy or were we seeing a growing embryo moving? So if you can tell me if we have good eggs that are doing what they should be doing or are there any concerns with them? Can you really see movement this early 7 days?? Thanks everyone and happy V-Day!

With white eggs you can see veining by day 5. With light brown eggs I look for veining on day 7 and recheck on day 10 before tossing. With dark brown eggs, I watch the air sac get bigger and toss if they smell. My flashlight lets me see some veins in my semi dark eggs but lots of movement in my light brown eggs on day 7.

Thanks, I am sure we seen movement in at least two of them. The other eggs are so hard to see but you can def, tell the mass is growing larger inside the egg. What movement we seen looked like a little bean size area moving closer to the shell then back into the egg IDK it was crazy looking lol but we did not move the egg it was moving on its own. Just getting really excited about the hatch lol bare with me!!

Yes, this sounds normal. The eggs should start filling up with a dark mass. Which seems to be what you are describing. You can see the embryos move, but I never have this early. You porbably just moved the egg a little. You can still shake the yoke around in the egg at this point. So that is likely what you were seeing.

Idk, I know that you can move the egg and get movement like a water bottle, but this was not being moved by either of us. it reminded me almost of a slow heartbeat motion in and out kinda is the only way I can describe it. it was not a movement from spinning the egg it was moving in and out of the egg almost. pretty neat either way!

I've seen several pictures of hens on here wearing their hen aprons.   I currently have two hens that are getting a bit overbred, and I have nowhere to move the roos to.

Would someone be interested in making a little extra money to make me a few aprons?   I could probably make some, but I'm just not interested in figuring it out when there are such talented people on this thread.   If you are interested, send me a pm.
i can make them. How many do you need?

Congrats! I have definitely seen movement around this time as well. Between 7-10 days is when I typically candle and pretty easy to tell on lighter eggs if they are good or bad. The Marans eggs are much more difficult but I tell if they are fertile just like you described. Before long the dark mass will start filling up the bottom of the egg.

Thanks bradselig, For the advice and the eggs!! The dark brown eggs prob, are not the best to learn how to candle on lol but hey if I can see progress with these babys I bet light browns or whites will be cake lol!! I hope we get all 9 to hatch..
