Speaking of sunburnt chickens, I'm assuming they can get burnt, but it's never been an issue with my naked necks. So can they really get sunburnt?

Went out this morning to try to get the fence fixed. I had to drag my kids out there! You'd think after bring inside for 3 months they'd be happy to go out!! I decided it wasn't worth the effort to get them out again after lunch so the fence is still off
I was hoping you'd tell us what martinsville has.TSC in Lebanon was setting up their chicken care displays yesterday but no tanks yet.
Martinsville RK has BR RIR EE SLW ..I think that's it. They had a ton of them Sunday. I think there were more breeds than that too. My aunt works there she usually sends me a pic of the list of breeds. I'll ask her tomorrow to send it my way and any new ones. They usually will get more in and of different types later too.
I'm doing good to stay away. hatching more Marans setting Sunday! Throwing in a few OE, AM's and AM crosses. Gotta figure out a good way of separating my breeds in the Bator.
Any good suggestions. .what works best? I really wish I could have a separate hatcher honestly! !
Maybe try to make some tall cardboard dividers. Maybe use a little duct tape to hold them in place. I think duct tape comes off styrofoam ok.Martinsville RK has BR RIR EE SLW ..I think that's it. Never thought about that, will make some with next empty I get. I also use the little ones to feed the goats and horses with and a big one to scoop dog food with, and 2 big ones I carry scratch and layer to the coop in.Those would also make great grit and calcium feeders for the adults!
I want the netting for the starlings. dont know what to do about the coons??? but I will figure it out... you just watch and see...ebay netting, I'm not sure it is raccoon proof but it keeps out hawks and owls. There is a 50 x 10 and you could make a 2 ft covered part of the run or there is larger net. I would get the larger 50 ft net and trim the extra off. There are all kinds of uses for the netting scraps. WE use ours to section off areas of the coop when needed or cover brooders.

We have an ador too. works great.
no I don't have those in the bitties brooder, they are in the 3 week and over groups. The snake wood was just sitting around collecting dust... lolI love the coffee can feeder but I'd worry about the bitties drowning in the water can. The snake wood is a fab idea!!! I learn so much from ya!!!
Well I always try and use what I got first, even if it aint pretty... all about saving all the money I can. I use and reuse so much DH says I am as hillbilly as they come... lolChickRookie, I love the coffee can idea! That's making good use of what you have. My first instinct is to go buy something and I'm really trying to work on that. The other day my friend gave me some essential oil that is wonderful. I asked her if she was using an atomizer for it in her car and she says "um, sort of, its just a cotton ball in my heater vent." I have a lot to unlearn.
I really appreciate all of you guys. The misfortunes have been awful, but the successes are increased by us sharing and doing better next time. I've learned so much from reading your stories. So, thank you all for that.
I have already thought of that, but I'm kinda hard headed and I like spoiling my girls so if I can cover it all then they can have all that room. they are only locked in it at night and when I'm not home anyway. They free range if I'm home. even in winter when weather allows, aint been much of that this year!!!You don't have to cover it all though, you can create a smaller secure run and open the door to a larger uncovered run when you are home. That is what I do. I have them secure when I can't be there to watch them or when I am on vacation. I'm sure something really tenacious could get into the run, but then there is the steel pop door to get through and I can't see anything getting through both in one night. I also splurged and got an automatic door for the coop - best money spent EVER! I've only ever had a chicken get closed out once, one of the fool cochin boys randomly got locked out once, but I heard him out there when I went out to feed the horses. It hadn't happened before and hasn't happened since. They are usually "in bed" about 45 minutes before the door senses dark and closes.
I was actually surprised when those new feathers came out. I thought she might be like that for the rest of her life. It got that way last spring and they didn't grow in until almost November!
I'm going to make one tomorrow for the oyster shells. You all are so helpful and creative!!! Ya'll are my new BESTIES...all of ya! LolThose would also make great grit and calcium feeders for the adults!
