INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Thanks! He seems to go through spells. We will have a really hard time and then we seem to have things fixed and it gets difficult again. He'll be 4 in June so he's kind of in between naps and not :( He was not at Poultryfest, DD was with me :)
Woo hoo!! Can't wait!! The eggs and the birds are gorgeous! :)

Thanks! I really love them. Especially my Roo he's sooo good with his girls and attentive!

Hey ya'll! I am loving this warmth. The mud, not so much.

My EE, Einstein has a boyfriend! He has been coming over from the property next door, crossing the creek to come visit her. I believe he is a Marans. He is huge and has seen a few winters because I noticed his comb is not just one big nub.

He kind of growls at me when I come to close to either of them. I had a talk with him. Told him he'd have to be nice otherwise he's getting the boot!

At least E has company until the chicks get bigger!

minmin1258   LOL   I understand the travel, but I just paid $50 for $20 hen & rooster just to be "mailed"  that includes plane & usps travel from Seattle, WA.    They were just TOO ADORABLE to not have.  I am sitting here now waiting on their delivery.  Sure hope SPRING comes soon.

Welcome and don't forget to post pics of your new babies.

You'll also have to come visit when we get together! You are not that far away! It is tough feeling alone and it is nice to have the online network. I am single so I do everything myself most of the time. It get's really hard at times and it is nice to have others here that share some of the same interests and are going through the same struggles.
I am not used to doing things by myself well the big things anyway, now that I am... its a pain. Dont know how you all do it by your slef all the time... koodooos to you and everyone else that do things alone.

~~Thunder, Lightning, pouring rain, and we are still SNOW covered. ONLY IN INDIANA !!!!!

~~Between the snow and rain there is so much water it is running in our basement door, I've been trying to dig a trench, but not easy as the ground is still frozen.

But the geese and ducks are loving it !!
We don't have all that yet but is coming this way they say, it is just sprinkling right now.
Sorry it's going in your basement, we used to have that problem, but now we have a patio at the basement... no more water drainage.

If at all possible...I'd encourage you to get some wood chips rather than sand. You might be able to contact some of the tree services even at this time of year and track some down for a reasonable price if not free.

In the summer they'll often bring them to you free when they're working in your area if you call around. Since they're not working on chipping much in the winter you may have to pay for some but they are well worth it.

If you get them now, just be sure they aren't treated with anything! You want just plain wood chips with nothing on them.

The wood chips will make a great deep litter in your run that will keep the soil healthy for the chickens and also prevents what you're going through right now.
we have a saw mill that we can get sawdust free but don't know about the chips, but saw dust does a good job of that but it takes allot.

My dogs have turned into muddy pigs. I am so happy the ice is gone, but mud up to my ankles isn't much fun.
I feel your pain ... have 6 dogs.... but no snow... I'll put up with the mud!!!

My mom likes salmon favorelles but doubt we could get any from you as we live at the very bottom of Indiana and you live at the top.

I have a question I was going to use a Rubbermaid box as my brooder and put a little hardware cloth window in for them. Some people say since they are plastic they get to hot. Anyone used a Rubbermaid box before and if so did you have any troubles?
maybe you could meet in the middle of the state???
as for the Rubbermaid brooder... they work fine that's all I used last year till I got the dog creates and I use them now.

cant see it but I have plastic sheet up 1/2 way all the way around and it keeps the mess off the floor.

I must be more desperate for new chickens than you. Lol I'm driving 285 miles one way to pick up 6 chicks, two ducklings and some eggs ( don't know how many of them). I get to meet Lilmizcareall and SallyinIndiana. Am looking forward to the trip on so many levels!
Even if it is over 560 miles! Lol

When are you coming? And where are you all meeting up? I know I'm not far from SallyinIN.

I was going to go directly to Lilmizcareall's home then to Pick up th chicks n eggs then to SallyinIndiana's to pick up the ducklings. We hadn't really planned to meet as a group. So unless they say differently I guess that would be the plan.

After we get the coops rearranged this year I am so wanting some Marans and cream legbars. What I absolutely love are the Phoenix.
If Brad and Patrick can't help you with the legbars, there is a seller on ebay in southern Indiana, trey22250

Most likely with it being a weekday, I'll be staying home with the children. I would not mind a get together at a park on a weekend. But my place is a bit small for a get together. And weekdays I choose to keep the children home if possible so no one gets a cold right now. too much going on with chicks and spring on the way to have a house full of sick children :). Then there is the fact that the children outnumber me making any trip not a simple 5 minute trip.

Sympathizing with all the lack 'o sleep crew. Dogs woke me up barking at 4am. Looked out the window and the local coyote pack was in our yard near the barn. Got dressed and took the dogs out with me to the barn. Made sure to make a lot of noise on the way there. Didn't find any issues around the chicken and turkey pens, so made a loop around the barn. Then the thunder and lightning started and my big brave coyote chasing dogs basically drug me back to the house. That pretty much ended the night for me, couldn't get back to sleep. Combined with a few other sleepless nights recently, I'm pretty much in zombie mode. I'm right there with ya on counting down to the weekend.
I wish you the best of luck getting sleep soon! With the storms predicted for tonight, I'm pretty sure it will be another late night, but who knows...it might just turn out ok!
I'm setting Black Copper Marans Sunday but depending on hatch rate I may be selling. Hatching some for BrownCow. Due date won't be til 3/13 tho. I work in Indy Monday and Tuesday so just let me know if timing works and if you're interested. Setting as many as the bator will hold. Unfortunately that's only about 41!!! LOL Here are the eggs I've gathered. I was hoping to hatch a few AM and NN a couple Olive Egged but I've hit my limit already and have 2 more days of gathering. Think I'm going to just pic the absolute darkest eggs put a few off breeds in the fridge. I have a blue Marans and a GCM but they are hatchery so I'm going to try to darken their eggs up. The carton with the lighter eggs is what my hatchery Marans look like. They shouldn't even be able to advertise as selling Marans because they have to meet at least a 4 on the shade chart and they do not! IMHO Rant done! Hahaha! One of my hens. Below is my lone Roo. Hoping to hatch out at least 5 keepers for myself. I need more pairing for my girls!
OOOHHHHHH!!!!! That's on my list. I really want super dark eggs to go with the other lovely colors we have...If you have a spare pullet, I'd love one. I could coordinate with Peaceful Walls and get my stuff spotless before they get here. LAM- Will you have any Buckeye Pullets soon or anymore Bantam Ameraucana babies?
I'll be in Indy on Tuesday evening and Wednesday morn, would you consider selling some of those pretty dark eggs? PM me please.
