INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

First visit to Rural King EVER! What a difference from my local feed stores! This last knew her chicks, for sure!! Way to go Bloomington Rural King and the associate, Terina!! I will be back soon!
EmSteele~ I'm glad you had a good experience, but keep in mind that 1. It's Bloomington 2. It's a new store.

Finally caught up! I think my BO might be molting she has been loosing feathers and hasn't laid in a while. Others still keep laying. I have 26 eggs in the fridge right now. We need to get eating lol.
Okay so we went to a 4-H project night last night (its a new thing that informs kids about a few different projects once a month) and went to the dairy foods judging. Just like napoleon dynatmite (anyone else ever watched that movie?) my brother and I were cracking up. I felt so sick after having all the those nasty dairy products lol.
goatluver ~ Napoleon Dynamite is one of my all-time favorite movies. So creative and quirky!
chick rookie ~ Hang in there! We're all rooting for you.

minmin~ Hope your daughter is healing. Thinking of you.

Do you want to be listed on the BYC Indiana Members’ List?

“Being a member of this thread” just means adding your screen name and flock info, which can be helpful because the list is a spreadsheet format that lets you sort the list by breed, county, or other category. It’s an easy way to find other members who have the same breed you have or who live in a nearby county, etc.

Click on the link (Indiana BYCers . . .) located below my signature to view the list. Just look at the bottom of the list page for sorting options.

If you’d like to be added, send me a PM (personal message) by simply placing your cursor over my screen name: Mother2Hens, and you will see “Send a PM.” A personal message ensures that your info is added. Please send your screen name, county, and city. Also include the following information about each member of your flock: List each species (chicken, duck, etc.), breed (Barred Rock, Blue Cochin, etc.), is it a LF (Large Fowl) or Bantam? If you breed, please include the species. bradselig actually adds the info, so you can PM him directly, too-- whatever is the easiest for you. if you have any questions about this thread, please PM jchny2000 (Janet) who is the founder (thread starter) of this group.

Indiana County Map for instant member location/Avatars

If anyone would like a map of your county, like the one on my avatar, I will be happy to provide one. If someone wants a combo map and a chicken or an animal for your avatar, I can put that together for you, just PM me. When I read posts, many times I think “Now where are they from?” I look at the city and still have no idea what part of the state they’re from. The map icon with the county in red because you could quickly glance and see where the member who is posting is from. These avatars are not required-- they are just a free service if you’re interested.

AVATAR UPDATES

So how can you tell what color an EE will be as an adult? Or can't you?
Oh no.. they change a lot. Even as adults a molt can show new colors!

Check out this little guy. Not sure what color to call him. Looks like a blue partridge cuckoo to me. Lol what's your thoughts?

Very pretty baby! I think a blue partridge for sure and has barring!

so true!
Kab-can't find the post but it said something about you having a really dark EE chick. Though I remember I couldn't see it very well in the pictures it is likely an EE. While chipmunk is the usual down color, you occssionally get the "oddball" light or darks

heres some I got last year, there are two production reds but all the others are EEs, the one off by itself is pretty dark
Thats what my lil black one looked like. She had a lot of muff and beard early on too.

Please, everyone if you would like to help as a "contributor" we need members willing to help keep our member list and event info up to date.
We are always looking for more help to keep our thread active, strong and working for us! We ask you are proficient in Google docs.
(Microsoft excel is a huge plus!) and active on our thread.
Our breeding member section is a huge help to find someone local and conscientious on breeding their birds.
The best lesson I have learned from keeping poultry and waterfowl.. the choice to make in new flock additions is from a private breeder.
Stronger hardy chicks without issues and health problems compared to shipped chicks from a hatchery.
So my EE babies will be darker than peaches. Thats cool, as long as they are all girls lol.
EE are really hard to tell sexes. Boys get the typical longer legs, and comb goes red earlier but aside from that I look for the saddle feathers

EEs are one of the easier breeds for me to sex. At 6-8 weeks they start to get their color pattern and pullets have an overall uniform pattern (except for maybe the head) and makes have a patchy, usually with some red in the shoulders, pattern.

I have caught another coon tonight. This is the third one this week hoping to start thinning them out. I put out a live trap and put some food scraps in there and caught the first two. This time I just set the live trap and caught a smaller one. These things must be reproducing faster than im catching them. Oh yea i have caught the neighbors cat twice also. That gets old fast also

I woke up to find six little chipmunked fluffy faced chicks in our livingroom!!! Dad stopped by TSC and got some for me. The first thing I heard concerning them?
My youngest sister:
'Have you picked out which one your gonna shpw? Can I hold them now?' ~ let it just be said my sister misunderstood what my dad meant by 'they can hold and handle chicks except for the ones you set aside as showing birds' - paraphrased but still. :D I'll have to post pics of the fluffy guys. I too have a darker one but I think its just dark brown, not black its got lighter along its wings and such I think. But they were adorable!!! Now to make sure the sis's wash hands before smuthering my new birds lol I'm gonna be a helicopter mother with these broods ohvey.
So how's everybody elses chicks doing?

So I opened the locked down bator!!! I misted the 6 eggs left and rescued two little fur balls last night. No peeps on the other eggs
1f628.png
I added a little more water. The heat and humidity goes back up pretty quick in the hovabator Genisus. I'm going to leave the eggs back in lock down until I smell odor or see more chicks. Now back to my first ever hatches Birchen Marans with feathered legs from the one and only Brad!! Thanks buddy.
Let me know if I got some show winners here

There are two pics each. The first one was the first to hatch, and I love the little mustache lol, and the second one is who woke me up at 1am to say "hello world chirp chirp" over and over! They both are doing good in the brooder with the Buff's and EE'rs. Both eating and drinking also.
