INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Hmmm....I think it might be time to move the "chicks" out of the house! Lol. Honestly I think it is a partridge silkie that I hatched last summer/fall who didn't do well out in the garage with the cold. I brought her inside and in with some older silkie chicks I had. Looks like she is becoming a hen!

THAT!!! Is the tiniest egg ever!!!!

I also have some hatching eggs if anyone is interested. Silkies (both from my mixed pen and white pen), bantam Cochins, Marans, possibly bantam moderns, and legbar/Marans mixes, and legbar/tolbunt polish mixes (it is possible to hatch pure birds from these eggs, I have a pair of legbars and pair of tolbunts together). Fertility is iffy with the legbar eggs and tolbunt. I do have eggs of both growing in the incubator just haven't hatched any yet. Pm if interested

Also, trying my hand at using a broody to hatch eggs! I put 8 modern eggs under my broody showgirl. Let's see if she accepts them. Fingers crossed!

So I was hearing a constant peep from the "chick" room. After awhile, I noticed it was one of my cuckoo silkie chicks. I noticed his butt was wet earlier, but thought he sat int he waterer. So after looking more closely, right below its vent is a very hard internal mass. It's about the diameter of a penny. Thinking the chick maybe constipated, I took him to the sink to soak in warm water. Right before I put him in, he had a normal bowel movement! Now I'm not sure what the mass is. I'm not sure if it is some sort of infection from the umbilical cord or what. I'm off to do some "googling" but has anyone ever had this issue?
bradselig ~ The other night when I was looking a pasty butt info for chick rookie, I noticed that "belly button" problems are an issue to watch out for. Not sure if that's what your Silkie has since I'm not sure if you were referring to a new chick, but this info is important for anyone who hatches chicks. It's of course from my "Chicken Health for Dummies" book, and because most parts of the book can be found online, I believe it's okay to pass this info along. I have given this book lots of publicity! I just like having a chicken resource book that's all about one subject, especially health issues. Hope you can figure out what's wrong. Good luck!

Well she is sitting on 5 eggs and refused 3! Now I'm curious to see if the three she refused are any good and will put them in the incubator.

thanks! I don't think I'm dealing with the issue they are talking about as mine is very hard, not mushy. I still haven't found any other info though, but will keep looking.

So far the only one that looks like a cockerel is the blue Orp. Sorry, I know you can't have roosters. The silkies are too young to tell
CCCHICKENS~ I actually can have roosters since I live just outside the city limits, but having had roos before (Nene's 5 brothers), I know that even one can be loud and that they don't just crow in the morning like I learned in the storybooks as a child.

If I didn't live in a subdivision and had lots of space, I would enjoy having a nice, respectful roo.

I know that the Silkies can't be sexed yet. I just posted them so Brad could see how they're turning out. I hate that I have to wait so long to find out their sexes. It's hard to raise them and have to let them go.

And they are looking nice! Silkie Roos aren't too loud.

Hey, all.  I'm about 300+ posts behind.  Just hopping in to ask...

Who watches your chix while you're on vacation?  How do you work that out?

It is a big problem. We've been lucky enough to have family and/or friends help us out in the past. But it would be nice to have something more reliable in place.
