INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Maybe we should all hire each other to watch our farms while we go on vacation, and then pay each other in eggs and chicks.

I got three out of five today - two blue! It has been a loooooooonnnnnnggggg time coming but I think things are looking up!

On a sour note, I got the plague part 2 and am really sick for the second time in a month!!!!! People need to learn to keep their germs at home so they don't infect innocent bystanders! Boo to being sick!!!
Get well soon.

Thats great Min! I'm excited to see how they turn out.

Here is the baby ducks first swim last night.

Adorable! I wonder if they aren't Cayuga? They look more brown than black tho.
I think his foot will be fine, just keep him working it, the swimming lessons should help!

Got GREAT news. My puppy is statring to use her leg, right noow she is just pulling it forward, but its a start!!!!! Before it just drug behind her. She still cant bring her toe up, but hay it's a great start for a pup the vet said would end up losing her leg. Stilll no tail control yet, but 1 thing at a time right.

the pic on the left is before, the one on the Right is today

1 time she even pulled up her toe, but only once. I was so happy for her small accomplishment I was standing in the yard crying... what a baby!!! lol
Aww, thats awesome news!

Let's Judge! ~ Here are some more poor quality photos of my beautiful LF English Orpington chicks from Kiniska. (I will take some during the day in natural light as I keep saying, but forgetting to do!) Both breeds are 7 1/2 weeks old
I feel certain the the blue one (Mr. Rooster) is a boy. Any thoughts?
His comb, beak, and legs/feet are larger that the Splash who obviously looks like a hen. Her tail feathers bend downwards and his are getting fluff that looks like Silkie fluff. He has little feathers starting on his neck that remind me of milkweed seed pods (not sure of the significance, but they're different than hers).

Here are two of the sweet Silkie chicks from bradselig:

Splash

The lighter one of the two blues
Fingers crossed its not a roo. Still kinda early to tell.

Hey, all. I'm about 300+ posts behind. Just hopping in to ask...

Who watches your chix while you're on vacation? How do you work that out?
I don't go on vacation lol. No but seriously I haven't been on vacation for a few years. I finally have plans for spring break-2 days of scrapbooking. But that doesn't require me to go very far. I am sure my family would help out though. Then there is always the option of paying a responsible kid to take care of them, but I barely trust my family with them lol. Not that they aren't perfectly cable of feeding and watering them, I just like to have things done a certain way.

Hmmm....I think it might be time to move the "chicks" out of the house! Lol. Honestly I think it is a partridge silkie that I hatched last summer/fall who didn't do well out in the garage with the cold. I brought her inside and in with some older silkie chicks I had. Looks like she is becoming a hen!

Sally, racin and jchny thanks for the response about room temps. I have it in a spare bedroom that we don't heat but I don't think the temp changes much. I need to pick up a thermometer before I get some eggs started.

Also I didn't see anything about humidity with it... Suggestions?
I try to keep humidity around 30% and up it to 70% at hatch. if filling the water trays in the bottom aren't enough, i used sponges in small tupperware containers.

So I was hearing a constant peep from the "chick" room. After awhile, I noticed it was one of my cuckoo silkie chicks. I noticed his butt was wet earlier, but thought he sat int he waterer. So after looking more closely, right below its vent is a very hard internal mass. It's about the diameter of a penny. Thinking the chick maybe constipated, I took him to the sink to soak in warm water. Right before I put him in, he had a normal bowel movement! Now I'm not sure what the mass is. I'm not sure if it is some sort of infection from the umbilical cord or what. I'm off to do some "googling" but has anyone ever had this issue?
No, haven't.. doesn't sound good at all. Good luck.

I did an eggtopsy on it. I knew when I pipped it something was wrong. It's top beak never developed and it didn't have eyes. Poor little thing. The other 6 chicks are perfect. Same temps and humidity. This ones full sibling is perfectly healthy too. Maybe the egg was porous or something weird like that. Well now we know.
It happens, I see a lot of oddities with hatching so much. Especially the quail.

Im so happy the doggy is doing better Chick Rookie. You deserve some good news.

We named the little hurt duck Scrappy, we haven't thought of a name for the little one yet. She has a hobble on and has therapy swims every nite. Im waiting on the niacin to kick in. She went for a swim last nite and was still favoring her leg, but tonight she dove a foot into the water and swam a bunch so hopefully its a sign of improvement. Its her left leg. Btw those EE chicks are wild! They are like the pirahna birds from the croods. lol Also they hate people no matter what we do. Im used to silkies lol. They love people. Anyway here are the ducks from last nights swim. I will update when they are doing better. Scrappy holds her left leg out as you can see in the video. She will stand on it as soon as her swim is over but wont put weight on it shortly after.

Sorry about the tv in the background. lol

My oldest DD covers for me when we go camping. We usually trade off weekends since she lives with us.
We have the added problem of elder care, so if it wasn't for her, I would not ever go anywhere.

Just too cute! I bet Scrappy will be fine. I have had a few gosling with "weak legs" that later were normal.

I have not used them but I have seen posts on facebook for a chicken / pet sitting company in Indy.

Personally, I would want another chicken owner in some ways but then the bio risks might mean a non chicken owner is better. I think it depends on how much stuff you have going on too. Right now I would not think of asking for someone to watch my chickens unless it was an emergency. I have laying hens, breeding pens, growout coups, ducks, tiny brooders, and incubators finishing up 3 different sets of eggs. It is not as simple as feed and water right now. Come summer or early fall after the extreme heat is over, maybe it will be feed and water all pens, gather eggs.
