INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I got a soft shelled egg today from one of my OEGBs. She was acting a little odd, now I know why. By the time I went inside she was starting to perk up.
I had a couple of those before, from my older hens, I didn't get too one of them in time and it was eaten by one of my hens..... had a time of it after that...

I have two dark brahma hens, and I love them. Very docile, big and fluffy, and they lay better than Cochins. Always on the lookout for more brahmas.
DH loves them, he picked up 3 from RK. I laughed at the " non chicken man" unless it is a Cochin.... lol

They just went out today. The adults were outside until November. The 2 month and 5 month old juvies were born and raised inside the house in October, so this is their first time outside. I have been gradually lowering the temperature in the room they were in, and since it was sunny and decent out today, and not super cold tonight, we moved them out. They are in my large fowls summer coop until I get a shed for them. Our little silkie coop is to small for 18 silkies. We will see tomorrow how they all do. I have been worried about respiratory issues, I hope that doesn't happen. I think they should be fine. Its very dry inside. When they pile up like that the generate a lot of heat.
my Silkies went out at 8 weeks old, depends on if you have a heat source and the temps outside IMO, they are doing fine except they wont come out of their house, but I think I need to put hiding places up??? cause the Browns that went out with them go out all the time.

And a close up of one of the supposed D'Uccle.
very nice chicks, where or what name brand is you shavings? I cant find any that big and the last bag is so dusty I have to pound it and wait for a while before I can put the chicks back in... I hate them ( the pine )

SPRING HAS ARRIVED, WHAT!!!!
and is going to be gone next week...

Its been a bit busy here. Lots of bonding time and such. Then there is the warm afternoons that DH has been attempting to work outside with the chickens. And of course while DH is home the children are having lots of fun playing and being children. Pictures will come eventually.

Here is a picture. It is an early one so she is a bit smaller now. It won't be long before she will be growing way to fast just like her siblings did.
AWE!!!

Fuuuuu..... lost 2 more Welsummers and another Cornish x. I think they are smothering each other. I've lost 10 chicks in 4 days. I can't get them to stop huddling together, regardless of where I put the lamp. I keep the Cornish and layers together for a week before I separate them.
put 2 in there. ( lamps )

Are they huddling right under the lamp or around the edges of the brooder?

Closer to the heat lamp, but not not directly under it. I'm gonna try to put get another lamp on them. It's just kind of weird because I didn't have this problem with my last batch. Mix that in with sores on the head and they seem to be dirtier for some reason.

And we have snow on the ground. Again.

Beautiful! Can't wait to see photos of that new coop :D
I have been taking pictures throughout the build and will be sure to post them.

Glad it worked out! I love your red barn! DS enjoyed the pic, our chickies have new friends!

I was hoping you would show him their new home and that it would set his mind at ease!

So, funny story. . .One of the ISA I got from browncow15 is very independent. She goes off scratching around wherever by herself. Several times she has ended up on the other side of the fence which at the moment is the wrong side of the fence but eventually will be the right side of the fence. The problem is 1. she is out away from everyone else and 2. she can't figure out how to get back over to the right side of the fence.

Last night I was gone to the Penn Spell Bowl and when I got home I did a head count and was coming up 1 short, over and over I counted. I got DH and we went on a chicken hunt thinking that she was out there in the dark huddled somewhere because she got over the fence and couldn't get back to go to bed. We walked around with a big flash light, no chicken. Ok, one more headcount. . . and guess what, there was one hen who was covered up by the rest that I missed. All I could say was "well wasn't that a nice after-dinner walk honey"

That's a tough one. It sounds like you have the lamp where it needs to be. I'm out of ideas.

I've gone completely away from lamps. I use an ecoglow and a premiere1 heat plate for my electric hens. Doesn't fix your problem now, but may be something to consider in the future.

Feeling a bit growly over an aggressive hen! She hisses and makes noises VERY similar to what I imagine came from a small dinosaur back in the day. I get pecked regularly by her! I've bumped her, pinned her, and thrown treats just to get her out of the path. I've NEVER backed down when she acts aggressive!! Driving. Me. Crazy!

Just one of those things I guess. Sigh.
