INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Duckies Garden ~ Ooh! They are sweet!  Btw, some chicken people think that Play Sand is too fine and can cause respiratory problems. Like everything related to chickens, there are many views, but I just wanted to mention it. Here's one explanation if you're interested:

Don't worry! The sand was for my human girls! Lol! I do appreciate the link to info though, I'm always eager to read up about chickens, never hurts to learn something new! :)

Actually, that fine sand isn't too safe for human chickies either. They can inhale it and have respiratory issues just like chickens can. We were told, back when my now 33-year-old was in preschool, to stick with the heavier builder's sand for children's sandboxes.

I've got 6 light brahmas, 3 of which are almost a year old (the other 3 are chicks) and I haven't had one single egg from any of them yet! I've read that they're fair layers of large eggs though. Despite mine not laying yet they are some of my favorites in my flock. Very friendly and beautiful! Mine sit on my lap and chatter at me while I pet them. So sweet! Here's my 1 year olds, nevermind the cats, they think they're chickens. Mine are just hatchery birds but I think they're so pretty!

I've got Old English game bantams and my hen-Georgie-lays a little cream colored egg about the size of a strawberry. Her eggs are the three small ones in the middle:

I just got 2 bantam cochin today. I haven't learned much about them yet but I can tell you they are super cuteness! So tiny! I have heard that cochin make good pets for kids.
The eggs are so pretty! I figured the bantams would be smaller -- it looks like they're bigger than quail eggs though (we were tired of peeling those small things!) Thanks for your input about the brahmas. I read they were sweet so it's good to have your confirmation! I would be getting mine from a hatchery too. Hope yours start laying soon. And we have a chicken cat too. She loves to hang out with all the different animals. She has sat on the back of one of our alpacas when he was kushing (sitting), she loves to sit on top of our rabbit cages and reach through to playfully bat at the rabbits and she likes to herd the ducks around their pen (which they protest very loudly!)

After the weighing of eggs I've done for this hatch most of your average LF are going to run about 55-70 grams and my bantam Cochins weighed in at most 37grams and Silkies about the same some even a bit larger than that so I would say bantam eggs are about half the size of the LF.. We love to use them as hardboiled snacks or in salads. They are wonderful bitesized treats. Adorable deviled too.
Thanks for the helpful info. Sounds like silkies might be a better choice for egg laying! How many eggs/week do you get from them?

Oh congrats!!!! Yes, hear you on space and room. DH found me 2 8x10 sheds last weekend, free!
He was doing tree/land clearing for them, and they want them gone. Wow is that going to give me the room I needed for breeding coops

Sweet! Congrats on the free sheds!!

PeacefulWalls~ The hen cake picture did come from Pinterest ~ Here's the link: Cakes Sara Weber 47 Pins - Pinterest I happened to see it on Google Image.
Leah's Mom posted the deviled eggs, so I'm not sure where it originated, but don't believe her if she said she made them! lol

!!! thanks for the link!

I have two dark brahmas, but lights are similar. Started laying around 28 weeks. Eggs are size large ~4/week. They'll never keep up with your browns and lorps. They are also supposed to tend towards broodiness. Mine haven't yet, but just hit 1year old. My biggest girls, but very gentle. Near the bottom of the pecking order. Want more.
Glad to hear how yours are laying. Guess it wouldn't hurt to get one or two of them

We have another pair of redhead ducks on the pond right now. The 2 pair from yesterday flew away yesterday evening. Don't know if this is one of those pairs returning or a new pair. And another pair of canadian geese joined them. I hope the geese don't make our pond a permanent spot this summer!

I saw large brahma at RK in new castle for 1.39 each straight run... I didn't get them. Wishing I did, they sound like an excellent breed now that I am reading up.. UGH.

I got my 3rd egg today from my BCMs, I need a roo! :barnie

I love my critters, am just lost without them if I can't be out with them every day. I do love to go camping and fishing too.
I trust my oldest DD to care for them when we can get away a day or 2. I rarely leave since I care for my parents.
We have an older camera security system that's needing replaced, looking at Fry's and Tiger direct for a new one.
Its pretty awesome to watch whats happening without going outside at 4am.

You can have my Roo! He's a Birchen Maran, got him from Brad. He has gold leakage.

Question about light brahmas -- are they good egg layers or just so-so?  I have isa browns, orpingtons & australorps.  How do the light brahmas compare with egg size and quantity?  I'd like to add something different to my flock & still trying to figure out what.  Also, in general, what size eggs do bantams lay?  I assume it varies from breed to breed, but how much smaller than their LF counterparts?  Any recommendations for bantam egg layers?  My daughter thinks it would be fun to have a couple...

We have a bantam Orpington hen who came to us as a packing peanut.
She lays a small egg, but it's still larger than the first dozen my pullet RIR has laid.
She give about 5-6 eggs a week, reliably, but was the first to stop laying in the fall.
She has Napoleon syndrome (sassy & pretends she's big) because she's the only bantam in our flock of 8 LF.
Good layer, healthy and determined bird.
I recommend them!

Since I just went down a hen

and Chewie was already over breeding (down to 4 hens with 2 pullets about 2 months away from laying) them I am considering placing a small order for chicks. I am thinking about ordering from Meyer if anyone wants to go in on an order. I'm open to another hatchery also but everyone else seems to be sold out. I want another rock and a couple more blue egg layers and will probably order a couple cochins as well. I was REALLY looking forward to getting the chicks out of my house but I'm hoping in another week I might be able to brood them in the garage.

Hi!
Totally new to this site and to owning birds! Still learning how to navigate!
Just moved to northwest Indiana, have some land so decided to get some birds.
I purchased some guinea fowl last summer from a lovely local lady to start with, out of ten I have seven left, I think two I lost to hawks and one from unknown reasons, just found him in the coop one day, still.
Well I figured it was time to move up to chickens, I tried contacting the same lady since she was great, but sadly no response, I was getting a little antsy so I ordered them offline from a hatchery. Which i assumed two days and I have em, nope they won't be here till may. So the wait is on....

I'm so happy to have found this site with so many people have ideas and knowledge.
