Quote: That would be me, unless some of the BR chicks surprise me! So far it looks like all 8 BR are pullets.

Your chickens are smarter than mine. They will walk right up to my English Setters if free ranging; then it is all over for them. I call it the circle of death.

Mine are very cautious around anything and everything, even people except immediate family.
They have most of the day free range, so they all are very wary of any thing not the "norm".
My geese and the guinea etc are even more wary! If anyone or thing shows up unannounced I know really fast.
All I hear is guinea screeching, goose honking and screaming LOL it gets extremely loud!
That's the way I want it too.

On mine its the 2nd row of little icons, says "insert image" just click that and follow instructions. If you get stuck holler!

So depressed....last year I planted 30 trees, 20 screen poplars (since I live off of Michigan Rd) and 10 fruit trees. I haven't checked the fruit trees yet but the poplars all seem to be dead. Not only was all that expense and manual hole digging and watering for nothing....but i lost a year of growth and it will be even longer before anything grows up tall enough to block the road and help block some wind. Boo. I can't decide if I should re-plant or not. If I do I am considering going with the green giant arborvitaes. I really don't want to add digging and planting 30 trees to my already long Spring list!!!
Ugh no kidding! Most of my critters don't bother the arborvitaes we have, but the cow and goats will have them in the new pasture! So I guess that will be a test.

Going to my first poultry show in a couple of weeks in Illinois! So excited, I would love to find a beautiful white silkie hen to go with my beloved Top Knot.

Congrats! I really hope to make some shows this year.

Sooo cute!

PeacefulWalls~ The hen cake picture did come from Pinterest ~ Here's the link: Cakes Sara Weber 47 Pins - Pinterest I happened to see it on Google Image.
Leah's Mom posted the deviled eggs, so I'm not sure where it originated, but don't believe her if she said she made them! lol

What? Are you questioning my culinary abilities??

Quote: My FIL has some of the african grass (?) its very dense and I do like the look of it.
He said it will get away from you if you don't keep it controlled tho.

Made a little progress today.

I used 6" fence post as legs, I cut a 3-1/2"x1-1/2" notch in the post so my frame could have something to sit in and fasten to. Then cut the legs to length to level the frame. I still need to run a 3rd set of blocks down the center with a 2x4 beam but it's more than I had done this morning lol.

As soon as I get the center beam finished I'll be ready for floor sheeting then the walls!!
Exciting!

Quote: Consider maples. They grow SUPER fast, if you can keep them protected the first year.
Then possibly add the juniper shrub in front of them or behind, it grows pretty fast and that would be an excellent barrier, and attractive too.
Hmmm that is a problem when the inmates eat their way to the other side.
LOL ya that's a problem!

More progress done!

Start of my pallet walls!!

Wow going fast!

Quote: I would like to find out more on bamboo too. There's a ton of good purposes for it.

toodlesmom-Thanks for the heads up about the play sand! I checked what I got and its not that sifty white stuff, its red gritty sand and it says best for building...I bought that fine stuff all last year though, I wish I'd known about possible respiratory problems then!

PeacefulWalls- do you hard boil your quail eggs? Thats an idea! I hadn't even thought to try that with my bantam eggs! We've been missing out! I usually scramble them for our ferret. They're so small it just never occured to me to use them for us!
tongue.png

That's awesome you've got a chicken cat too! I'd love to see a pic of the cat on the alpaca, how cute!
Good luck with your picks!

I wanted to mention I do hard boil our extra quail eggs, super healthy snack. my DD has made mini deviled eggs with them too.
I grab a hand full for a quick lunch. I haven't fried up many but they are really good

Quote: No kidding! Its starting to feel like spring, lots of green popping up.

Well, I lost one of the new cochin bantams overnite, bless it's little heart. Not sure why, they had pasty butt BAD when I got them but I don't know if that had a part in it or not. Poor thing. The other one is bright eyed and bushytailed. I called the store and they said they'd replace it so I ended up with one plus I bought one more (I didn't want the one to be lonely on the way home...) Now I'm wondering what color these will be. CCCCCCCCCHICKENS mentioned black and blue for the two yesterday and I'm going to guess it was the blue that passed since it was the lighter one. Does it look like 3 blacks now? Could the lightest one be mottled maybe? All three have a couple little white feathers on their wings but my black jersey giant chicks started out like that... Also, while I'm rambling on, when will I be able to tell who's who and what should I look for? Should I just watch their combs? Okay, here they are:

Thanks All!

Sorry about the loss. Good to hear they replaced the baby, and you got a little chicken math in too!
Hope someone can offer advice on colors, I don't have any cochin yet.

Yummy, making me hungry just looking at them!
Kitty just too adorable with the alpaca.
Quote: Oh that's good to know.

I also got my first egg from my lemon blue sport modern games! Can't wait to see if it's fertile!
yesss.gif
awesome! Hope it turns out fertile!

I need to re-home René. He managed to beat up my Banty Roo and I can't handle having two roosters crowing in contest...
All. Day. Long.
The majority of my girls are bantys and he is ravaging them.
So here he is... He's quite striking, a Birchen Maran I got from Brad Selig.

I also have this little mystery cockerel that came from Brad, too!

He's a Maran mix of an unknown father,
big_smile.png

Both are free to good homes...or freezer camps.
Will send you a PM

I hav a BIG problem....HELP!!! Please!!!! What is wrong with this baby??? Is there ANYTHING I can do to help her???
This is a straight on shot. Her head is literally turned nearly upside down! She's stumbling everywhere!!! She's only 17 hrs old, I've bn giving her vitamins in her water and even let her hav some straight from th eye dropper. She can't eat unless she's held and the food is softened with th vitamin water. I had 8 Silkie eggs only 4 hatched, two hav already died she's #3... I don't want t lose another one... Please help.
Oh I am so sorry! I would give the same advice as kab.

That Birchen roo is pretty, but wow! So much gold! I do have a roo that's more golden than I'd like, but no were near that gold! The other two Roos saddle and hackle colors are great. I think I will need to cull my first roo from the breeding program.

And for anyone curious about the little barred cockerel. It is actually from a Birchen Marans roo over buff and white naked necks (columbian pattern) and white rocks hens Can anyone tell me where the barring came from? The only barred birds I have are the legbars and there is no way the legbar roo got in the free ranging flock and my legbar hen who was in with the Marans wasn't laying at the time (plus the barred cockerel hatched from a brown egg, not blue).
Wow that is a good question!

So next year I'm planning on starting my violet laced wyandottes project. What would you guys here in Indiana pay for a violet laced (aka blue laced silver aka platinum laced) wyandotte?
Yes kind of!

Here go. Violet laced hens and a splash violet laced roo..

WOW they are gorgeous! I may be interested i them next season.
Blues lavenders etc I have a huge weakness for.
I don't honestly know what a fair price would be.

I'm thinking of rehoming Cricket. I would only rehome himif someone wanted to use him for breeding or flock protection. He would make a nice EE breeder. Anyone interested? Im not desperate, just a thought.
I would love to add him to my EEs, but I can't promise a LF roo's outcome here.
He is gorgeous tho, and I bet would be an awesome flock roo. I don't currently have an adult EE roo.
He is probably a total sweetheart at your place, but once he got here and had his own girls that could change.
The bantams and silkies are different, they don't pose a real threat even if they get aggressive.
If I have a stinker in those boys, they just don't stay with the hens, they go to the egg coop.

Had a super busy day. Had the pleasure of meeting yankeedoodling today
highfive.gif

Special thanks to her for meeting in town, I was able to get supplies before we met up.
Peeked in at TSC's chicks in Anderson while I was there.
Saw they had some misc"Red" pullet chicks, BA, JG and (CX) Cornish Cross.
Also had several pekin ducks about a week old, and ouch! they aren't cheap!
love.gif
My first pekin have hatched this season, I have 3 adorable little ones peeping at me.
I will have ducklings available, fantastic fertility rates on the eggs! First round was 3 of 3 hatched.
Hatching eggs are available to anyone interested also.
If anyone is looking for pekin please PM me. I will be more reasonable than farm store or hatchery prices.
They are a good forager, but are messy and I don't recommend them added to a chicken flock.
Drakes will attempt to mate with chickens and can harm them! (Hens) ducks will be fine but keep water at neck level to prevent "dunking".
If you interact with them daily as ducklings they will be very social.
I do not socialize my flock birds as much since I free range, but all my babies get random daily attention from 6 adults LOL!
First geese are due next week and the very first turkey poult of the season
yesss.gif

Expecting a very good year from my Bourbon Reds. Hen's very first egg is fertile and growing nicely.
