INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Bummer about the trees! We bought 100 saplings from DNR in 2003 and about 20 are still alive. It IS a lot of work I agree.
We have about 5 3yr old saplings we've been growing--tulip, cedar, oak, etc... If you decide you want to re-plant some trees, you're welcome to have them. We live NW Indy.

Thanks for the offer! That is so nice of you! I may take you up on that! I went out to look at the fruit trees and it looks like all but three made it through. I am glad not to have a major setback on those. I need to find a couple cherry and maybe another apple or pear to replace the ones that died. Looks like more holes are in store! I just can't decide if I want to replace the poplars. I wonder if winter is supposed to be bad again this year? I really don't want go through all this again just to have them all die again!

The marans seem to be settling in with my flock. They roost at night but huddle together on the shorter roost away from the big kids. I went out and called the chickens for some scratch yesterday and the marans came running out of the run to eat with the bigs when I called. That is the first time I have seen them #1 run to me and #2 come out of the run without trepidation. I think they are starting to realize I almost always buy love with food and they seem to be getting more comfortable in their surroundings. That is great to see. Patrick has offered me a couple 11 week old barred rock pullets and a couple EE pullets. I am super stoked. They should be laying around the same time as Ugga and PeeWee (Marans) and that will give my current hens a bit of relief from Chewie sooner!

I need to get updated pics of my Bielefelders and Isbars. I know I have two pullets and three cockerel Bielefelders, but the Isbars were straight run and are all 4-5 weeks. It is looking like I got lucky and have 3 pullets and 2 cockerels there! If I don't have a surprise roo sprout out of the Isbars I will only need to re-home one Bielefelder cockerel! Woohoo!!! I won't be rehoming for a few months yet (12-16 weeks) but let me know if anyone is interested. They are supposed to be gentle giants, super docile and HUGE. He should be 10-13 lbs when done growing. He will be free to any of the Indiana BYCers (as long as he is not going to the pot). If no one here wants him I'm sure I can sell him on the Buy-Sell-Trade or Craigslist.

They are sooo pretty! I would love to have a gentle roo. My orp roo is very handsome & I love looking at him, but he is challenging me almost every time I go in the chicken area. I've starting taking the pitchfork in with me. He seems to respect the prongs pointed at him when he advances! I have scars on one of my legs from another orp roo who attacked me. Has anyone else had a nice orp roo or are they all this way?

Yuck! I won't keep a mean roo around here. I don't want to have to watch my back when I'm out working and I like to let them out of the run when I do. I may rehome one of the Isbar roos also. I am undecided. I do want to breed them and it will be nice to have a backup, but 6 Roos sure seems like a lot of crowing from the coop! Here is what the Isbars will look like. Either way I am not in a hurry to re-home any of these boys. They will go when I find homes for them. One of my Isbars is the super light blue, almost lavender. The other four are all the dark blue. I can't wait to see what they all look like grown! And I can't wait to get some speckled green eggs!

This is what I found. Not sure on it's accuracy but here it is.

US egg sizes

Egg sizes Average weight
Jumbo 2 1/2 oz (71g)

Extra-large 2 1/4 oz (64g)

Large 2 oz (57g)

Medium 1 3/4 oz (50g)

Small 1 1/2 oz (43g)
Peewee 1 1/4 oz (35g)

Here's another good site that shows the US egg sizes by weight.

Thank you so much! I don't have a scale to weigh my silkie eggs and was curious what the size actually was. I've been selling them as medium, they are pretty good size for how small my birds are.

I think it really just depends where you get them. My dad used to have a business selling pallets and he gives me untreated pallets for my chickens.

I agree. I have seen treated pallets, but there are plenty untreated ones out there. We built a house and pen for some pigs(this was while they were still small! ) out of pallets years back and they were all untreated.

Thanks, it's going to be a pretty solid building when it's done. Here is another pic of the sidewalls and where the people door will be.

I'm just glad to be able to work outside a little even though 29/30 degrees wasn't the best lol
This is such a great idea! I can't wait to see the finished product either. I see a lot of pallet projects on Pinterest but never a chicken coop!

[rule]DuckiesGarden ~ When you said "play sand for my kids" I thought you meant your chicken kids!   Btw, I like your plate with marching ants that you used for your egg display.
toodlesmom ~ Hey, nice to hear from you again!
I bet Play Sand could be a problem for some, but I bet construction sand isn't sterilized. However, since kids play in the dirt, they don't necessarily need sterile sand-- unless they plan on inhaling it! If it's not one thing, it's another! haha   :p

Morning pond update:  2 pair of redhead diving ducks & 1 pair of mallards swimming around.  Wonder how long the redheads will be in the area?  The grebe we had 2 years ago stayed at least a week.  I read they (redheads) go to the northern plains/parts of southwestern Canada to breed.

So jealous of all the awesome wild birds you are seeing! My parents occasionally get some neat birds on their neighborhood retention pond, most commonly blue herions or blue Aarons as my son calls them :)

It's been fun so far, here is a bit more done this is the first half of the walls. A second layer will be added when I can get a second hand to assist (three pallets fastened together are heavy lol) thanks!!
