:frow Welcome, glad you have joined in! Please feel at home, and have fun chatting!
Our only rule is to follow BYC guidelines, we talk about everything, from our kids graduation to our livestock.

I bookmarked this too, very good info

I am so glad you are sharing this, its pretty exciting! Hope you are able to sneak a few pictures.

I already had you on favorites, and you bet its ok! Sound like a fun contest too! :D

How old, I bet I can help you, I raise both breeds.

They both were hatched mid February?

I have 4 Lavender orp roos that are all sweet, and never a problem at all. They are all over a year old. How many roosters do you keep? I have learned if there are a few, they seem to leave the humans alone and go after each other

My first rooster, GLW Red, would attack us. Since we have added and changed the flock so much, He focuses on the other boys now, and is my shadow during the day a lot too. My extra roosters all live with my egg coop flock, and when I set breeding pens I always try to have 2 roos in there. This has stopped the "aggressive' rooster issues for us.
I have 2 roos in with about 30 girls. Do you think I need to add another one or two? The aggressive one (Orville) is my lemon/lavender cross orp & the other is a lavender orp -- both ones Brad hatched for me last summer. They won't be a year old until June. I haven't really seen them fight together, though. Maybe because they grew up together?? Orville is bigger/fuller than the lavender roo.

Early Friday morning pond party count: 3 pairs of redhead ducks & 1 pair of geese. The wood ducks showed up around noon yesterday and they all stayed throughout the day. I'm wondering if they will return today. Oh -- and around 5 pm last evening I counted 25 geese on the pond with another 15 in the field right next to us. We'd prefer if they would find another pond to hang out in. 1 or 2 I don't mind so much, but not 25

If you're able to make the first picture bigger you can actually see a pair of redheads. The male has the red head. Unfortunately I couldn't zoom in any more & I didn't want to get right up to the pond in case I would scare them away.

I took this standing in the front of our barn. There were a few hiding in the tall grasses/weeds at the back of the pond. I think having our geothermal furnace empty water into the pond helped it thaw faster. The water enters the pond right behind where the tree stump is sitting. There was an area of water right there that never froze all winter long. Sure wished it looked more like spring in these pics instead of fall!!

@PeacefulWalls
Love your pond photos. I've always wanted to have water on my property. Even just a little creek would make me happy.

What has happened with your Sumatras? Do you still have them? Like them/not like them?

I have 1 small sumatra that is black and one rooster I hatched from sumatra eggs that has too much color to even be close to sumatra breed black standards. It looks more like a phoenix. But I'm going to get a quad of blue sumatras from a breeder in Greencastle later in April. My current black rooster is stunning but it took him a long time to fill out. However once he has filled out he has gotten braver and will mate in front of other roosters twice his size. I will most likely be looking to rehome him or crockpot him once I line up things with my blues. I'll wait some more on the tiny black one till I'm sure it has reached its final size. But if it stays banty size I'll rehome it too. I'm not real big on processing the banty sized birds. But I do need to start culling and cutting down on the number of different projects I have going on with the chickens.
