INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Today was a pretty sparse day on the pond. Only 1 pair of redheads and a brief mallard visit. I have a feeling that they may be continuing to migrate now that it's warming up more.
Aww, what a shame.

Here is pic of my coop and my layer boxes
Quote:
Last years pics when I started coop was an old shed I tinned and I put 2 ramps on layer boxes. I was all about the cheap. Only thing I had money in was screws.
Very nice! Looks great too.

I have a chick(10-12 weeks old) that is dying.
I moved her group to the grow-out coop about 4 days ago and everyone else seems to be doing really well. I have no idea what's wrong with her. She did drink water when I dipped her beak, but other than that she's not moving. Her body temp seems very cool. While I was trying to put all the chickens away tonight, my rooster grabbed her up by the neck and shook. She was hiding under a piece of wood, so I thought she was safe.

She survived his attack, but I don't think she'll make it through the night. Does someone have the info for getting a necropsy through Purdue? Is it free? I'm having a hard time finding the info on their website and I want to make sure it's not a contagion or whatever.
ETA-symptoms: Her belly area looks dirty, like she hasn't cleaned herself, but nothing is stuck to her. All poops in the tractor look clean. This is not the same group that had Coccidiosis a few weeks ago. She's very listless, drinks water, but only if her beak is dipped. Her vent area also looks clean.
I don't feel very "cut out" to be a chicken momma right now.

I am so sorry. There's a few on the thread that may be able to help you.

hatching vibes!

So bummed. .. tending to the hatchlings and noticed my Olive Egger is looking to have a crossed beak! Sigh... WTH!! excuse the language! but gosh I just hate that! And if I had to guess they all look like boys! I'm happy to have gained a GCM boy and some BCM boys ..though I rather have girl OE as my other came out with a single comb ... the pea combed one is tge one with the crossed beak...not what I wanted
Try polyvisol the infant vitamin drops, with OUT the iron. Its at most grocery and drug stores.
Good luck, cross beak is not fun. My little guy lived about 7 months or so, I didn't know about the vitamins until way too late to help him.

Been very busy the last week or so, FINALLY caught up tonight an didn't fall asleep!
Loving this weather

birds are all very happy too.
Ducks and geese got their kiddie pond back today, am still looking for a smaller one for brooding.
Hope this weekend to pick one up.

lilmizcareall ~ I am so sorry to hear that!

I know that we have had info from members about necropsies--seems like even in the past several months. I need to work on compiling some of that info for our Indiana page. I did a "Search this Thread" and found these posts/links from hogster160 and julie0477 (pg 1620).

my vet contacted purdue for me and they were able to do the necropsy at no charge. I did end up spending about $100 at the vet for the visit which included exam, Xrays, and ultimately euthanasia. I'm not sure why they gave me this deal, but my vet handled all of it. Euthanized the poor lil guy, packed him up and shipped him (I paid for shipping). The vet called me with the results. Purdue does not however do mareks blood testing although that is available thru Texas a&m. I chose the necropsy because 1. They offered it at no charge and 2. It would give me a broader look at what's going on in my flock than one Disease specific blood test. They checked for tumors, infection, parasites, took tissue samples of the organs, and looked for other abnormalities. Abnormalities would have led to further testing but In my case it all came back clean and pointed to injury as the cause. It's worth calling and asking about price. They may cut you a better deal than what's on the site. I've read of other people getting it done for free as well.

I believe the necropsy includes toxicology as well.

From hogster:
I had a necropsy done on one chicken. Cost was $80 + $10 fee and blood test was I'm guessing $35. The total came to $125. Here's the link to pricing. You can also find their phone number and ad there as well. You might want to call them and talk with the vet, describe the symptoms to him and see what he says. There may be a test of the blood or feather you could have done. They would be able to help you more with that than I can though. These are my first chickens, and I really just have no idea. I am glad others were able to give you some ideas. There are some very very smart people here!

I packaged up my chicken to send to Purdue. Very important...do not freeze the dead chicken. keep her in a bag in the fridge.
Here is how I boxed up my chicken. This is from "Not an Emergency...Merek's in the Flock"

Bruce1 ~ Good to hear from you again! Have you hatched eggs before? I haven't gotten up the nerve yet. I loved my pet Black Jersey Giant that I used to have. Great personality!
I have 2 hens that are doing an evil thing that I was going to try crating. When the rooster mates 1 of the 6 month olds and 1 of the older girls, these 2 attack them from the face end while the roo has them pinned down.

The 2 attackers are 2 of the best layers in the flock so I'd hate to just take them out. I'm hoping that things will calm down more when they can range more area now that spring is coming in. But this poor little pullet runs every time the rooster looks her way. She's terrified of being attacked and I could just do something I'd be sorry for when I see it happening.

Leahs Mom ~ Okay, I am not going to be able to sleep tonight.
hit.gif
I hope that you protect/separate the poor pullet and older girl from both the rooster and the hens. Not a good life living in fear of being tortured.
kabhyper~ I love this picture with Scrappy and the EEs! He looks like he is trying to camouflage himself-- and he does blend right in.

Last night in our newspaper the outdoor columnist wrote a piece about ducks and signs of spring. He said you know spring is on the way when you see certain ducks coming around, mentioning the ones we have had. He also said you know spring is finally here to stay when you see the blue winged teal duck (a dabbling - not diving - duck). They are the last to migrate. Well, guess what I just saw on the pond -- 2 male blue winged teals! I looked them up and Indiana is included in their summer breeding area. I'm anxious to see how long they stay. Happy official spring everyone!!

Woo-hoo! Got a great phone call just now. When we built our new home in 2011 we obviously had our old home for sale. Of course this was during the most horrible time to try to sell a house. After months of having it on the market we finally decide to offer it land contract and that same day had a buyer, giving them 2 years to get their financing in place. We just hit the 2 year mark and our realtor called to say they want to do the final closing on Friday!!! There was always the fear that they would back out & we would have 2 houses and 2 mortgages. They did great, though, making every payment on time. I'll be so glad to have it official signed and sold and no longer ours. Mom & Dad sold their house the same way (they have their apartment here with us) and they have about 4 months left on their land contract. I keep hoping theirs will close early as nursing home care for Mom is looming much closer now & the assets/financial thing for that could be a lot messier with their old house lingering.

Good Morning everyone!!! I went out to check on the babies after their fist night in the coop. They were no longer chirping pitifully and all got a big drink and then trooped out the pop door into the run in a single file line!!!! SOOOOOOOO CUUUTTEEE! I am also pretty impressed with how bold they are for going out on their own on day 1! The marans didn't go outside until day 3 and that was only because i physically PUT them through the pop door! LOL. Bold group this time around! I have this upcoming Thursday and Friday scheduled as vacation days so I can get some outside work done, so OF COURSE both days are looking like rain! Just my luck!!! Too much to do!!!!

My chick did not make it. :(
It'll be ok, though. I feel like I got a little over-confident with my chick raising. This will remind me to make time every morning to check on everybody. Especially when they are new littles that are going out.
Thank you for everyone's help last night! After posting, I kept doing research and I think it was Cocci. That group was treated at first light this morning and I feel a little relief.
On a much happier note,
ITS GORGEOUS OUTSIDE!!!!

I was SO excited to get some hatching eggs from racin last night! I set them when I got home so hopefully we could have an Easter Day hatch and then when I went to check the bator this morning the temp was at 110* :( I could cry! Any chance they're still ok?

On the brighter side we are finally feeling better here and have a beautiful day ahead of us to get some outside time in! BTW loving all the pics of everyone's chickies and projects! I'd comment specifically but it's rather tedious to do on the phone!

Yup one two year old doe, this is second freshening and she had 3 beautiful healthy kids. Triplets are not that uncommon but not that common either if that makes any sense lol.
What a blessing to have triplets-I bet it will be a lot of fun wrangling around with them!
