INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

In other news I got antsy over the weekend and decided to candle my eggs a little early and.... I didn't kill them!!!

The temp has held steady since then too so the only thing I can think is DS went in to "check on them" and fiddled the the control.

Just a reminder, I have a large hive nested in my office trailer. It sat for about 3 years before we got the trailer. Anyone wanting an established "wild hive" is welcome to it. I will probably offer it to the local association next month. I am on and out of it a lot, they seem to be a calm hive.
It's Done!!!!! All but outside corner trim, and inside perches and nesting boxes. Ok ok so it's not done but at least the siding is all done

The trim around the windows was tricky but I figured it out, and it looks great.
I just love it!

Your babies will be very spoiled. I really like how you i the peaks, just too awesome!

I now have my very own blue sumatra chickens. Thank you so much LAM and Brad for making it possible.
Congrats!

Oh, my theres a bunch of us that love silkies! I have 13 right now. several different colors.
Anyone want a New Hampshire rooster? My original plan was to send all the ones that turned out to be roosters to the freezer...but this guy is sooo sweet, it would be a shame so I thought I would offer him here first :)
I'd love to have him, but I am way over my rooster quota right now. I could put him with the egg flock if I get the bad boys processed this week. I have 4 that are just terrible (sexlink cross) roos, and have to go. If we can fit him into a chicken train, I would take him for sure.

Got my babies and am heading home...amazing, but not a peep out of any of them. Thanks bradselig for the chicken train and the 3 most adorable chicks I've ever seen! Thanks sallyinindiana for the roo...he all but purred when I closed the door on the carrier. Thank you for the transport.
Fantastic to hear everything went well!

Quote: I would love to get a trio of dark cornish. They just look like sweet birds! Every time I meet up with racin I just drool over his babies!

Hey are there any handy people on here who could help me build a coop for the cheap??
We all keep talking about a work co-op. Many of us need hands to get our projects done!
Pallet coops are CHEAP! And often you can get pallets free for just asking, gas stations, grocery stores, hardware to name a few.
Lumber is really expensive. If you can access pallets, thats a huge plus towards cheap.

Hey guys another question! Would any of you be willing to donate hatching eggs (especially colorful ones..dark, white, brown, cream, pink, green and blue as I think the kids would love that) to my son's school, as they do a project hatching chickens to learn. I'd love to be able to give them colorful eggs as I think they would love it and also it would keep them from using hatchery eggs. Everyone who wanted them could have the chicks from their eggs, and if a few people chipped in with some I'm sure I'd get enough without too big a burden on any one person. I could also pay for the eggs, though not a ton. And like I said, you can have your birds back, I think they only keep the chicks for a couple of days. Please consider it!
Absoloutely. I can offer anything from quail to turkey and waterfowl, just PM me the details or post it.

Lol no sooner the kids get home from school they wanted me to build a table to play board games in the chicken coop!
Thats sooo cool!

I live in southwest Michigan and am trying to make a whizbang plucker. The problem I am running into is finding a 14 or 16 inch pulley to use. I was curious if anybody has one laying around that I could pay to have shipped to me or pick up from you if you live close enough. Also any imput or websites where I could locate one cheap with also be appreciated. Thanks everyone.
Welcome to our thread!!!! We are gathering stuff too, look at harbor freight tools, ebay and homier tools. The real guy is on ebay...

Happy belated birthday to my oldest hen, Cubby, who turned 9 years old on Saturday!

I totally forgot about it because of all the stuff I have going on, but I'm sure she doesn't mind. This girl arrived here as a day old chick. I can't believe she's still as active as she is--and that it's been 9 years since I got my first chickens!!

So I was thinking about the BYC article contest (which is here, for anyone that hasn't heard of it: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/864291/byc-article-writing-contest-5-2014-write-win ) and was wondering what y'all thought of an article idea I had. I'm not sure it's really totally chicken related, although I'd focus on chickens in it, but I thought I might write a sort of beginner's guide to genetics? Of course, I'm not an expert by any means, but I feel like I might be able to translate some of the jargon into terms that are more easily understood. Does that seem like a useful idea to anyone, or should I try to think of something else?
I think it would be very helpful. And a very happy birthday to your hen, thats amazing!

Everyone loves them, so here they come. Chick pics!

lajohnston ~ What did you end up doing? It seems like yours would be warm enough if they were in the box part of your Nap Town Coop with plenty of pine shavings.

I still have them in the brooder in the house. My thoughts are to wait until the weekend to introduce them to the coop/run so I'll be home to monitor them, and probably bring them in for the night if the temps are still getting down to the 30s. They'll be 7 weeks old by the weekend, do you think 30 degrees is too cold for them?

I'd love to steal your unintended hive! Paying a professional to bring it from your place to mine would be cheaper too! Let me look into that! Thanks for the offer!

I want to put my chicks out this weekend, but am a little nervous about it. I don't want to lose anymore, but they are stinking up my room! I am cleaning their aquarium that they are quickly out growing everyday. I had to take all of there leg bands off too, as they were getting to tight. Not that hard to remember who the boys are though. Both black and my favorite splash. (I know not suppose to have favorite lol). Anyways the lows are suppose to be 43 Friday, 54 Saturday, 43 Sunday. I will be using my new eating plate outside. Anybody used there's in these temps? And can't wait for Saturdays blood testing class. Only thing I am dreading is waking up that early. I plan on leavin someone between 4 and 5, which means I will have to get up sometime between 3 and 4. I am going to get home, get chores done, eat supper, and study. Then go to bed! Anyone else here going?

atrueb00 ~ I was confused. I was thinking of you when I was responding to leslea who is a writer. :p  However, she might be a designer, too!
[rule]SallyinIndina ~ Glad to hear that you finally got your Blue Sumatras! :)
[rule]Chick Crazed ~ You have a very nice set-up for your wonderfully chosen chickens. I think you may be too logical and in control to be a chicken person-- unlike the rest of us who are always pulling our feathers out trying to get housing made after impulsively getting chickens.

I've got some plans and help so I think I can do it. I think I could over complicate it and make it hard and expensive but I have built a small coop for bantams before and it turned out really well. I think my biggest issue would simply be one of scale.
