INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I'm out of place here, but don't know what else to do but reply to a recent post.
I don't "get" how to start a topic or ?, nor if I'm actually registered as being in NW Indiana, or how to just jump in, meet others, find someone near me, get help, or automatically get to recent activity. Seems to always send me to things years old. Thanks for Any help, Anyone.
Welcome here! Glad to see another person close by -- we're in Goshen & my husband works in South Bend.

Thats great news! They new their eggs would freeze so they were waiting

Alzheimers/Dementia is so hard at times, we both know it. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your Dad, hope they can help your Mom live comfortably. I know what you are dealing with and its a lot to bear at times. My Dad still swears he is FINE and stop griping, leave it alone!
I am very grateful for your post. I have so much to learn about handling the problems that come with both illnesses.
My Dads been up and down too, the heart valve issue is not helping a bit. We are still waiting for his valve.
The rage and confusion is the hardest to see when they have a bad spell, and the emotional crash they have is even worse.
My Mom has said she feels like he is out of control at times too, but isn't ready for him to be in full time care yet.
I want to keep them both home, as long as possible. There comes a point to where its risking their health without 24/7 care.
You are awesome to consider hosting a chickenfest! I will help any way I can.
PM racinchickins, he can tell you the good and bad when he hosted last years event.

There is a lot of good threads on BYC, start here:

Welcome to our thread, and please invite your friend! Petitions, city hall meetings are a good start. Here are some good points to argue!

One very good point, If INDIANAPOLIS our state capital allows chicken keeping, WHY are the smaller cities and suburbs so behind the times?
Why can't we raise our own chickens and have fresh eggs for our family! And why can't we educate our children to be self sufficient?
This is one subject that really angers me

Do not choose how and what I feed my family and teach my children!
Please let your friend know there are answers, and you can fight it!
We were lucky in that the duck eggs we got before they stopped laying weren't frozen -- only had a couple get that way.

I'll let y'all know when we've finally got things settled here & can host, although perhaps I don't want to find out the "bad" from when racinchickins hosted! I can't imagine that there was any, though

There's a group here in Goshen that is also trying to get an ordinance passed to allow for chickens. It didn't pass the first try at city council, but it's being brought back with some ammendments (unnecessary ones in my opinion). Hopefully the city council members will realized that having a couple chickens in the backyard is not that big of a deal -- and a lot more pleasant for the neighbors than the barking dogs we put up with when we were in town.

I'm not to happy with mypetchicken! I'm not sure if this is the norm, but if I ran a company I would not do this. I bought 14 SLW hatching eggs. They arrived today. They were all in good shape (have not candled yet). I un wrapped them from the bubble wrap. I noticed on two of the eggs they are cracked and it seems they have been fixed!

They have def. been fixed. So is this normal? I know you can do this but why ship eggs in this shape? To me it don't look good. But this is only my second time ordering shipped eggs.
On a better note I made a make shift run for the pallet palace after work. Using our pet pigs kennel!! They don't know what to do yet lol

That is just bad form sending eggs like that. Not to mention they are dirty. I collect my eggs and pick the perfect ones to ship out. I would demand a refund if I was you.

I need a good name for my blue sumatra rooster. Any ideas? He is very much a gentleman type of a rooster. The very first nice to hens rooster I have owned. I have some very calm and nice to people HRIR roosters. But this lovely Blue guy does all of the cute stuff I read about here, calling hens when he finds food, dancing and prancing to ask mating permission, and even not mating when the blue hen also politely dances back but away.

How about Astaire after Fred Astaire (for his classic dance moves!).

leslea ~ My sister lives in Lville- St. Matthews area and can see all of the flying action from her backyard. Great way to avoid the crowds!
We live near the Eville airport and my chickens still look confused when they see airplanes -- and jet streaks.

Hey its a farm, they need our unwanted cat

) It is a HUGE peeve of mine to find a kitten dumped out that has no chance of living here. I don't want and can't have house cats with moms health. I have them spayed and let them live here, in the barn. If they make it, then all is good. Many are even declawed and just have no chance. Right now, there are none left of what's been dumped. Just wrong!

One of my daughters and her husband live near an apartment complex. I think the folks from the apartments move out and leave cats. their house is right at the end of the populated portion of the road and it is all farm field and larger acerage homes on the other side of them.

They began leaving water out for them during the winters. One of the young'uns kept coming to their deck window and communicating with her 2 indoor cats. They worked with him until he would come in the window to eat and spend a little time with them (without their cats present). They ended up taming him to join their other cats as a house cat after they took him to the vet for all the "stuff".

In our area you can purchase certificates to spay or neuter a stray cat to return back outside. They've done 2 of them and continue to leave water for them as well.

Was carrying out a bucket of water to the hen shed yesterday.

I had removed one of the block steps and forgot it wasn't there as the bucket I was carrying was blocking my view. When I stepped on the "invisible step that wasn't there anymore", I came crashing down to ground level with my ankle between the shed and the lower level of blocks. Hit my shins on the floor edge of the shed, and the water from the bucket went flying onto the rooster and 2 pullets that were in the separation pen.

They thought I was attacking them and they went nuts.

It was quite a scene.

My husband was gone picking up some kennel panels that we were given free. Went out there 4 more times hobbling to finish things up and was taking care of my dad who can barely walk. I look like this guy

This is the worst sprained ankle that I remember ever having. How the heck are you supposed to take care of animals with a sprained ankle?
