INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

We have a dog kennel we closed in with blue and black tarps with a top, filled inside with hay, and put a heat lamp over the roost...would that work there as well?
South...Madison Co

Now...another 2 questions.

-What size is the dog kennel?
-How many birds are in that dog kennel?

If the number of birds is not too large, and the kennel is large enough, you "could" use that kind of a setup with a bit of modification.

You could get a couple sheets of plywood and make a sleeping room w/roost on one end or corner . Maybe even raise it up so they could still use the ground under it to run on. It doesn't have to be "fancy-pants"...but enough room for them to get out of the cold and sleep at night safe from predators.

Due to the need for shelter from cold in the winter I'd make that plywood living space as large as possible. If small, it can cause a good number of pecking order issues and some of the "lowers" may get stuck outside when it's too cold due to more agressive birds guarding the entrance.

If you made a simple "larger" house with the plywood sheets it could sit outside the pen with a door going into it and still give them lots of room in their kennel.

Again, it doesn't need to be "fancy-pants" or expensive...just large enough for your flock, easy for you to get into to feed, water and clean out litter when needed.... and night predator proof.

Edited to add: I don't recommend using a heat lamp either.

So I think my 6 month old silkie girls are laying, and someone hasn't figured it quite out yet. Found this in the coop last night, and when I blew it out, because of course I have to keep it, it had a yolk! Albeit a very teeny one.

BackyardBitten ~ Great selection! As you may know, the Chicken Health book is co-written by Rob Ludlow, the BYC.com owner. Gail Damerow wrote "Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens" 3rd Edition (recommended by Leahs Mom and an Indiana thread favorite) and "The Chicken Encyclopedia," which I've recommended. [rule] Leahs Mom ~ Good for them! Some people are so heartless about their so-called pets. That's terrible about your accident! I was afraid you were going to say the the rooster attacked you when you were down. Hope you have a speedy recovery. Maybe you could rest on a hammock while DH takes care of the animals! brown cow ~ Congrats! Didn't know you were expecting. I had "morning sickness" that lasted all day, too. Reminds me of the fallacy that roosters just crow in the morning. [rule]familytradition ~ Good to hear from you! A new member was just asking about meat birds (I only know about pet birds - lol), and I told one of our regular members, a college student pipdzipdndreadytogo (Kristen) about you because she loves genetics. Good luck with your quail!
Thanks! :) and LOL! So true!

It always amazes me what can come from mixed chickens. Gus my Slw, and one of my Rhode island red hens eggs hatched this little girl.

I would have never guessed this chick...

Would have become this...................................................................
