INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I think I have a broody Muscovy hen?!?! Lol
Is she peeping at you...That always kills me, so pitiful.Huey peeps and complains, then will nip if I try to take them.I am letting her brood this year.

CRSelvey" posted: On another topic, I have had several friends offer to buy eggs, but I have just been giving them out when I have extra. If I did have more in the future, can anyone give me a fair price to charge for a dozen eggs? They are fed non-gmo organic food (not counting some of the food scraps we give them). I'm not sure if that makes a difference.

We exchange 6-packs of eggs for favors...since DW still can't drive from her shoulder replacement, we give the folks that drive her to phys therapy a dozen a week.

Otherwise, we try to get $2 per dozen from select persons who appreciate them.
We give a teaser 6-pack and see what the person says after they've eaten them. If they say "you can hardly tell the difference from store-bought eggs, but the shells are harder to crack" I never sell them any. City folk!!!

hatching vibes!

Today my puppy turns 10 yrs old. It's hard to believe that I've had her for 8 yrs now. Even with tearing up several bags of hay through out the house, helping herself to a box of pancake mix, eating my parrots head off, and becoming the gimpy girl she is today from a herniated disc, I wouldn't have it any other way. Hoping for several more years with her!
Mine also turns 10 in a few days. 2004 was a good year!

My second broody girl has finished her hatch -- 7 of the 9 eggs. The 8th chick had the top half of the shell off, but must have gotten stuck trying to get out. The 9th egg had no signs of hatching -- of course it was the blue egg from my EE. The 7 other hatched chicks will be 6 weeks old tomorrow already! Late Tuesday afternoon I picked up the chicks I ordered (isa browns, australorps, barred rocks, easter eggers and assorted bantams (my daughter's)). The light brahmas I ordered were unavailable this month, but that's OK since I have a bunch of chicks now. Before my daughter & I left the feed mill she looked in the box and one of the bantams looked dead, so they gave her money back for that one. We took it with us and on the way home she realized it still had a bit of life to it, so we were trying to decide what to do. After we got home I ran to TSC for the second time that day and got some savachick electrolytes. Got back, went to the barn for an empty water jug to mix it up in and peeked at my new babies. The broody had hatched them in a rabbit nest box and one of the chicks had fallen out of the box, couldn't get back in and was lying next to it (of course this was the 36 degree day so super cold.) I thought this one was dead too, but there was a bit of life in it. So we did what we do with our "lazarus" baby bunnies that have almost chilled to death -- put them down our shirts so they're next to our skin, lay a towel over to help hold in the warmth and bring them back to life!! I'm not sure how many baby bunnies and now chicks I have saved over the years doing this, but it usually works! I knew that the hatched chick was suffering from the cold and apparently the little bantam had gotten too cold, too. It gradually got energy and is now bouncing around with the rest of the chicks like it never had a problem

. And I've also taken the broody and her chicks out of the nest box so they can run around and get under momma whenever they need to.
good to hear on the hatch! I have been there too with birds stuffed into my shirt, especially power outages. Eggs too!

I candled the 3 BR turkey eggs from Jchny2000 this morning to put them in lockdown. 1 was a definite quitter sometime in the last week. 1 was a maybe - it hadn't quite filled up the egg to the air cell, but I could still see veins and possibly movement. The third was a go - definite movement as soon as I candled it.

So 2/3 are now in lockdown. Hatch is hoped for Easter Sunday!

hatching vibes! I had a quitter too. I do have 1 poult so far, and she is glued to the nest hoping for 2 more!

This temperature plunge pointed out to me the value of NOT heating my coops. I have 15 three month olds in a coop with an attached run and a pop door on a photocell. The chicks have just gotten brave enough to go outside into the run. When they first start, they're not always good about getting back inside before dark, when the door shuts them out. Three nights ago I remembered to go out and carry the stragglers inside. The next night I forgot and 5 of them spent the night huddled together next to the outside wall when it got below 30 degrees.

I carried them inside the next morning before sunrise and hung a heat lamp a few feet off the floor to warm them up. All of them are back to normal, but had they not been acclimated to the cold, I think I may have lost them. I have since removed the heat lamp.

Glad they were ok! And if I haven't said it already, welcome to our thread

Quote: Great idea!

Quote: And one of the eggs has pipped! Hopefully we will have a hatchling soon! If so, it will be my very first turkey pout hatched myself. Of course the other 48 turkey eggs in the incubator are cooking along and hopefully will follow right behind.

AND...I have not one, but two broody turkey hens sharing the nest. Going to build another nest tomorrow to hopefully get the other hens to lay in so we don't mix eggs.

I went down and swapped eggs with @ellymayRans today. My CCL for her BCM. What gorgeous big brown eggs. She has beautiful chickens and peafowl. I can't wait to see what her eggs hatch out to.
I went home and set half of them under my broody phoenix hen. She pecked at me when I was putting the eggs around her, then got busy tucking them under herself.

It was only half because that was all she could fit!

I set the others in my incubator along with the latest batch of Turkey eggs. The hatching continues!

kabhyper, bradselig, jchny, and silkie people ~ My son and his GF were over for the evening and as it started getting dark, my son said that something was wrong with my Splash Silkie. She frequently shook her head and at times her head was leaning forward a little like she was going to fall asleep. Of course, I panicked and brought her in, held her close and gave her some Sav-A-Chick electrolytes. I tried looking at her head to see if I saw any mites or anything, but I swear, it is so hard to see anything through Silkie fluff! She's always been kind of a loner and the most nervous one of the Silkies (I think my former Eng. Orp roo who always thought the sky was falling somewhat affected the Silkies natural easy-going nature. lol). So, I figured that I was probably stressing her more by holding her, so I brought her out and put her in the part of the coop where she, the other two silkies, and their surrogate mom, my Eng Orp Splash pullet had gathered for bed. Then it occurred to me that maybe the Splash Silkie was just tired!!! Duh. Do they shake their heads when they're tired, like they're trying to stay awake until they go in the coop for the night? Could that be a sign of something else?

Our thread is known for being very active, and our members are supportive, respectful of each other’s opinions, interesting, and fun! The Indiana Thread is a diverse group of fantastic members who range from newbies to experienced chicken owners, those who raise chickens for healthful food, and others who enjoy chickens as pets. Please post messages and photos as often as you like! Posts are not limited to the topic of chickens. There is no such thing as a “dumb” question! Do you want to be listed on the Indiana BYC Members’ List?
“Being a member of this thread” just means adding your screen name and flock info, which can be helpful because the list is a spreadsheet format that lets you sort the list by breed, county, or other category. It’s an easy way to find other members who have the same breed you have or who live in a nearby county, etc.

Click on the link (Indiana BYC Members’ List) located below my signature to view the Indiana page. Just look at the bottom of the list page for sorting options.

If you’d like to be added, send a PM (personal message) by simply placing your cursor over my screen name: Mother2Hens, and you will see “Send a PM.” bradselig and CRSelvey (Cheryl) actually add the info, so you can PM either one of them directly, too-- whatever is the easiest for you. A personal message ensures that your info is added. Please send your screen name, county, and city. Also include the following information about each member of your flock: List each species (chicken, duck, etc.), breed (Barred Rock, Blue Cochin, etc.), is it a LF (Large Fowl) or Bantam? If you breed, please include the species. If you have any questions about this thread, please PM jchny2000 (Janet) who is the founder (thread starter) of this group.

Indiana County Map for instant member location/Avatars
If anyone would like a map of your county, like the one on my avatar, I will be happy to provide one. If someone wants a combo map and a chicken or an animal for your avatar, I can put that together for you, just PM me. When I read posts, many times I think “Now where are they from?” I look at the city and still have no idea what part of the state they’re from. The map icon with the county in red because you could quickly glance and see where the member who is posting is from. These avatars are not required-- they are just a free service if you’re interested.

Avatar Updates
If members would like me to change the photo(s) on their avatars, just PM me. Someone might have a picture of a chick that has grown into a hen (or a roo!) and would like to update the photo or someone might like something totally different.
