INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Brad- they are so cute!

Crafty- I have to keep my Millies separate from my others. Lieutenant Dan(Millie) and my BO Clive fight thru the chain link viciously! And I'm sure Clive would try the girls and kill-em!!!

Cluck- thanks. I'll have to figure it out. I'm on an iPad not PC, not sure if the process will be the same. Little by little I'll get it!

Just watched a birchen Marans hatch out! I was getting so frustrated just watching it "struggle" to get out of the shell, I can't imagine what they are feeling lol
I have had to help 2 hatch, i have very low humidity and i know its giving me problems. I love to watch the hatches, its just amazing what they go thru.

Tonight I killed a possum in my chicken house...

The kids and I were late getting home and doing the evening feed. The three of us had been in the chicken house for over 5 minutes, feeding the 2 month old chicks. I opened one of the breeder pen doors to drop off a bucket. As I shut the door I scanned the roost to check out the birds (bantam cochins in this pen) and there on the top roost were two hens on the left end and on the right, a big ol' possum.

It was sitting on the top rung just like it was a chicken. Strangest thing I have seen... I had my son go to the house for the .22
The whole time it just sat there, occasionally looking at me. I wish I could have caught and relocated it, but couldn't figure out how to get it done right then. It would be too risky to have scared it out, once it knew how to get in. I am assuming it climbed the 6 foot fence...

This was my first possum-in-the-chicken-house trouble. It was just one door and six feet away from my young birds.

I don't know if this was a first time or if it got in there every night. No birds have been missed.
GOOD FOR YOU! Scary, I had a similar situation last spring. All my young birds in one big coop, and 3 raccoon kits got in a space at the gate. my main coop's run is even covered at the top in chain link. I was a paranoid mom and was out there checking several times a night...they were so small, I am guessing just weaned. I grabbed a storage tote i had the food in, chased them into a corner, flipped it over top of them. Slid the lid under it.

this person does lol

X3!!!!

Chick-farmer, glad you noticed him. Did it hiss at you? It's amazing what they can get into. We had a big one at the back of the house the other night just as we were going to bed and we were both too tired to deal with it. That will come back to haunt us!!ha. Must be spring....things are waking up.

Not a sound out of it. Honestly, it acted just like a chicken on the roost for the night. There were birds on the same roost with it and the two below.

I have a very low quality picture I took with my cell through the chicken wire (bad glare from the wire reflection) on the interior door. Maybe I can post it tomorrow.

I have raised chickens for over 25 years and never lost one to a possum or raccoon... just neighbor's dogs. I don't let my show birds free range anymore due to the dogs. Though I am happy to say I have had the neighbor/dog problem under control for a year now.
