INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Thank you so much for your insight on this! I really appreciate that everyone is taking the time to help me out. This will be my very last chicken buy from someone I don't know. I don't think they guy was intentionally pushing bad birds on me. I have a pretty good b.s. detector, even concerning things I don't know a lot about - I can read people. I think this guy believed everything he told me.

Ya, and I thought about that. But this afternoon, I collected my first three eggs. There's a distinct size difference between the black orps and the barnyard, which are my three layers so far.

That would be awesome! I do that for people all the time at used car dealerships. I are a mechanic. ;-)

Thank you, thank you, thank you! They are completely awesome, if a bit more shy than the three bigger birds.

Well, here's the thing about that. I'm not so sure they're actually sick. Leahs Mom mentioned that sometimes poor food and dirty conditions can make a crusty chicken... I think that may be what I have. Supporting evidence (because we can never have too many pictures of chicken butts):

This is the smaller. It's hard to take a picture of the butt of a chicken while you're holding it.

coming from someone who looks at dog and cat hineys all day (pet groomer thank you very much!) if it's not swollen or red I'd clean it up and keep them. The conditions might have been extremely gross due to our lovely winter and poor hygiene. I usually only point out stuff if there is a distinct underlying issue like red (or worse black!) swollen, pus, etc. But just my opinion. I'm too new to really judge. Good luck though and congrats on eggs already!

Just going on a little rant for a sec!
I'm tired of people putting sites like craigslist down. It's your responsibility to be responsible about how you use craigslist! I've used craigslist to sell and buy items. Like today I just picked up a mid 90's rear tine counter rotating 5hp tiller that's in perfect shape for $250. Now that's a good deal and it was well worth using craigslist. Now I would not use it to buy a $500 dollar Iphone for $10 by meeting someone in a dark alley at midnight!! Or "inviting" a person to my house to "just talk" ok ok I'm done ranting. On a chicken note! I filled my compost tumbler (that I found on Craigslist) with grass clippings, goat manure, table scrapes (including coffee grounds) and finally some nice compost making chicken poopsies. So hopefully before to long I'm in the dirt business!!

I use CL a lot too. But I did have a bad almost buying experience lately. An hour drive to see an item that was listed incorrectly. I even asked good quetions in the email I sent to set up a time to see it. Still when I got there, the item was not as described.

Here's our roo at 8weeks!! Took them out today while we worked on the coop.

So, you know how when you bring your first baby home, by the second day you're sure it has cancer, but then your doctor tells you that babies usually loose a bunch of hair the first week and everything's fine?

Today I've gone from being sure these birds are almost dead to being mostly sure they're just suffering from less than ideal feed and housing. So ya, feeling a bit like a silly new parent.

Don't get me wrong, I don't consider these chickens my babies. I'm going to eat them some day, each and every one. Of course, some days with my 2-year-old son make me wonder if I shouldn't eat him, too.

I did call the seller, and he said he'd take them back any time, full refund, no problem. So that's nice. He said a few other things about chicken health and habits that told me clearly that he doesn't know nearly as much as he thinks he does... and as always I concede that I'm a rank amateur. But I've at least done the reading.

Someone mentioned posting the seller's info as a warning to others but I don't think I will. in my business, it's considered unethical to badmouth another shop's work. Yo just tell the pilot what you find wrong, and its up to him to know where he's taken his plane and who screwed it up. So here's what I'll say. if anyone is thinking of doing business with a chicken person in Indianapolis, read back through my account and make your own call. I won't be going back there.

So wish me luck, Lord willing it will all have been much ado about nothing.

oh, and just so I'm perfectly, absolutely clear, the chickens I got from LonelyPageTurne are not the ones I'm having trouble with. LPT's birds are clean, healthy, and happy, and I would not hesitate to go back to her for more.

That's all I have to say about that.

I'm glad it is working out! I think we all get "taken advantage of" in some form or another early on in the process. There is a learning curve that no amount of research will ever eliminate completely. I was sold a pullet and a cockerel that I realized eventually was a cockerel and a cockerel, and they were absolutely old enough to tell the difference, I was just new to chickens and new to the breed so I was an easy target. By this time next year YOU will be helping the noobs on the boards!
