INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

your coop is looking great.  I like  the venting in the door.  What a wonderful idea.

Thanks! I put hardware fabric on one side and bug screen on the other. I'm having the darnedest time with my stapler. Frustrating.

Really all I have left to do is put up the shelf to hang the feed and water from and put up the run. So I guess I won't need so much Co op help, though I reckon I probably would for the run. We shall see...

So, you know how when you bring your first baby home, by the second day you're sure it has cancer, but then your doctor tells you that babies usually loose a bunch of hair the first week and everything's fine?

Today I've gone from being sure these birds are almost dead to being mostly sure they're just suffering from less than ideal feed and housing. So ya, feeling a bit like a silly new parent.

Don't get me wrong, I don't consider these chickens my babies. I'm going to eat them some day, each and every one. Of course, some days with my 2-year-old son make me wonder if I shouldn't eat him, too.

I did call the seller, and he said he'd take them back any time, full refund, no problem. So that's nice. He said a few other things about chicken health and habits that told me clearly that he doesn't know nearly as much as he thinks he does... and as always I concede that I'm a rank amateur. But I've at least done the reading.

Someone mentioned posting the seller's info as a warning to others but I don't think I will. in my business, it's considered unethical to badmouth another shop's work. Yo just tell the pilot what you find wrong, and its up to him to know where he's taken his plane and who screwed it up. So here's what I'll say. if anyone is thinking of doing business with a chicken person in Indianapolis, read back through my account and make your own call. I won't be going back there.

So wish me luck, Lord willing it will all have been much ado about nothing.

oh, and just so I'm perfectly, absolutely clear, the chickens I got from LonelyPageTurne are not the ones I'm having trouble with. LPT's birds are clean, healthy, and happy, and I would not hesitate to go back to her for more.

That's all I have to say about that.

Thanks. I'm a bit obnoxious about keeping everyone happy to the point they're spoiled. Btw I forgot to show you my treat mix. Call me and I will tell you what I use.

I am so upset! I lifted my broody Bonbon out of her special coop this evening so she could go out to her favorite dust bath, and there was an egg stuck to her fluffy and a little messy rear end. The egg dropped and broke on the concrete. I didn't even notice until I brought her back to her coop. It was one of two Mille Fleur eggs! --and the chick was forming.

So sorry about this :( Hoping your other MF egg is female

oh my goodness -- can't believe it -- just picked some fresh asparagus! yummy!!!
Yum! Love asparagus

. When I've taken her out in the evening around 7pm, she screeches at the other hens except for her "sister" my Jubilee Orp Adeline. She cuddles up with her in the dust bath, and it's pretty sweet!
Oh my goodness-- speaking of screeching, I checked on my girls yesterday and my Penguin ("sister" to Pipd's Anonca?) was in the coop, sitting. Stripe jumped in and walked over to her and Penguin started GROWLING at her...it was so funny. I have heard other calls but this was a different one. Stripe finally gave up and left.

I agree, it is very sweet

I love it when animals love on each other-- especially my dogs or the hens. My SFH were doing that in their dust bath the other night too!

Thank you all again for all of your input, and I welcome any other comments or insights!

So glad to read that you got it figured out and that they are healthy and are staying, albeit needing some cleaning!
More of the Egg Plant done today. I got the linoleum stapled down, though I managed to get a nice big air bubble under it. Sigh. I got the perches and removable poop shelf put in lol. I think I've got enough perches for far more birds than I have haha.

Looking good, great in fact!
Just going on a little rant for a sec!
I'm tired of people putting sites like craigslist down. It's your responsibility to be responsible about how you use craigslist! I've used craigslist to sell and buy items. Like today I just picked up a mid 90's rear tine counter rotating 5hp tiller that's in perfect shape for $250. Now that's a good deal and it was well worth using craigslist. Now I would not use it to buy a $500 dollar Iphone for $10 by meeting someone in a dark alley at midnight!! Or "inviting" a person to my house to "just talk" ok ok I'm done ranting. On a chicken note! I filled my compost tumbler (that I found on Craigslist) with grass clippings, goat manure, table scrapes (including coffee grounds) and finally some nice compost making chicken poopsies. So hopefully before to long I'm in the dirt business!!

I agree about CL-- the buyer has to be careful... my husband got scammed BIG time but that was his mistake for trusting someone. We use CL all the time-- just picked up a Powerless grass mower (the ones with just the blades) from a guy this morning on the way up to MI. If you see another compost tumbler, send it my way please :)

Here's our roo at 8weeks!! Took them out today while we worked on the coop.
So Cute! Pictures like this make me sad I can't have roos...

Thanks. I'm a bit obnoxious about keeping everyone happy to the point they're spoiled. Btw I forgot to show you my treat mix. Call me and I will tell you what I use.

Its okay to spoil them- at least you are taking care of them :)

Well, I was in Michigan today for my deceased grandmother's remembrance gathering (she was cremated and had no funeral-her wishes)

* My one cousin ended up being there and he enjoys stories about my "exotic" chickens- lol he calls them that. He has had chickens for a number of years
but is the only one in his family that really enjoys them.

He was asking me questions about my SFH and he said that no one around him has them to sell chicks or even adult birds. He didn't want to drive to Indiana
just to get them for himself.

So before we left, I asked him if he'd be interested in the other grown out SFH chicks we will have after we figure out which ones are keepers or not
so he said he would, of course driving to meet us halfway. Happy to talk to other "chicken" enthusiasts who also are family members :)

On the way home, I was reading through some library books and TRYING to educate my DH about some chicken related information-- glad that he's even remotely interested

I'm glad it is working out! I think we all get "taken advantage of" in some form or another early on in the process. There is a learning curve that no amount of research will ever eliminate completely. I was sold a pullet and a cockerel that I realized eventually was a cockerel and a cockerel, and they were absolutely old enough to tell the difference, I was just new to chickens and new to the breed so I was an easy target. By this time next year YOU will be helping the noobs on the boards!

been there done that... just not to long ago I was sold a breeding pair of " Splash Marrons " turned out to be some kind of Game birds that wanted to fight everything on the place. got rid of them post haste!!!

Oh, I forgot to ask everyone about this:

Has anyone had any hens who grew spurs?

My cousin (see previous post) found one of his hens who has grown spurs. He got a picture but hasn't posted it on FB yet- when he does, I'll ask him if I can share it here.

Does anyone here use nipple waterers? Horizontal or vertical? How well do they work for you? I'm interested in installing some when I redo my coop and make new ones because they seem easier to maintain than the waterers I've got. But I was just wondering what you're guys's opinions were.

I've got 18 eggs in the incubator on day 20! I've got a sort of theory too, if they make it. Its that I can incubate successfully hatch eggs from my own backyard flock but when it comes to eggs from someone else, with good stock birds that I want it doesn't work in my favor.

Does anyone else have this issue?

CCChickens: that is cute! I guess she finds it cozy!
I use nipple waterers. They work great! I have mine on five gallon buckets. Each bucket has 5 nipples. Then I hang them. very cheap to make also

I collected too eggs from the bag nest today lol

I have had one or to. It isn't very common, but it does happen

So I've been needing to make a quick and cheap coop for the showgirls so I didn't have to keep bringing them back in the garage each night. Then it hit me, there was a chest with a hinged lid made of osb in my basement! It was left with the house when I bought it 5 yrs ago. I cut a pop door tonight just to get them in it tonight. I will be putting on a metal roof and slanting the lid/roof. Don't think I could get a coop cheaper than $2 I'll have in the roof lol.

Thankfully I'm planning on building my new shed this coming Friday as long as weather allows. That should give me atleast 3 more pens as well as chick grow out pens
