INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Busy, Busy day today. Started off at the lab for my wife to have some blood work done. Then off to our family Dr. Turns out I slipped a disk in my lower back from pushing a hay wagon out of the way :( Im not to happy with that I know it will be a long time to heal. Then after being told to take it easy, and do no work by the Dr. I bought my Alfalfa seed and fertilizer Then Went about spreading it on the field today. And if it dont rain tomorrow Im going to pull the seed drill and plant the new field! The meds are working a little for the pain but its still not feeling the best. We also bought a new grill Charcoal/gas combo and I love it (after I got it put together). Now im going to lock down 8 SLW eggs this eve and try to get some sleep. Thats been tough with my back feeling the way it does. Hope everyone is having a great week!!! In a couple days I should have a few more fuzz butts running around lol

Kari was an old girl, but she was a dependable girl. When she was young, she was Toyota's state of the art luxary sedan, her systems and features were years ahead of her time. She stood the test of time, too, and even at the age of 19, after over 200,000 miles of service, she could keep pace with anything on the road. She cornered like she was on rails. She was comfortable and efficient, and her AC was ice cold. We will miss you, Kari. Rest in Peace, old friend.
Oh my.. Hope you are OK!

Had a nice surprise when I got home today! As I pulled up to the nearest intersection, I see someone walking up to my door. I never have visitors (strangers) just show up. I was freaking out a little! As I pull up closer to my house, he runs from my front door out to a vehicle. At this point I can see he looks like a teenager. They back out of my drive, I pull forward. He was a 4Her and saw I had LF Cochins and was wanting some lol. He had wrote a note and put it on my door. So he asked what other breeds I had. I just asked if they wanted to see them. Come to find out I'm related to them by marriage! He seemed very knowledgable and eager to learn. As I went into each pen, I started collecting the eggs from all the pens. He was a talkative young man lol. By the time we saw each pen, I asked if he has incubated eggs before. He had. Then I asked mom if if was ok if he could have some hatching eggs. She said it was fine and I handed him the dozen eggs I collected. You should have seen his eyes light up! Then I asked if he wanted more eggs. He had a big old grin! I went in handed him an egg flat full of older eggs i was going to feed back to the chickens. I explained their age and fertility will likely be poor. So he got a nice mix of silkies, Cochins (both bantam and LF), showgirls, and tolbunt polish.

It was nice talking with him and showing off my birds, but the best part was knowing I just made his day!
You have such a kind heart! The boy will never forget your generosity!

All six of my turkey eggs that went into lockdown hatched within a couple hours. I also have chicken eggs in there I'm hatching for another member. The first has hatched and 4 others have now pipped.
My BRs are hatching slow, Just had one hatch 5 days LATE! Glad I left the egg in there.
Poult is plump and healthy too. The 2nd egg is pipping too so I need to check temp on my sportsman.

Fun times yesterday with the family. ..Between the rain and break from baseball we did some mushroom hunting. .Yum..had with our Brats this evening for dinner!

YUMMMMMMM! I was just thinking its morel time!!!

I have had an interesting few days. I took Monday and Tuesday off of work to plant my vegetable garden. I have about 200 square feet to plant so it takes a while to do. I also decided to utilize companion planting so I planted a redic amount this year! It is a pretty cool concept! Of course we had gale force winds and rain for most of my time off so I ended up working REALLY hard to get everything done before the bad weather hit. I ended up planting on Sunday in 30 mph winds and had seeds blowing everywhere. It will be pretty interesting to see what it ends up looking like! I may have some unplanned "companions" lol.

My parents suffered a tragedy, their great dane (rescued a year ago) attacked one of their dachshunds and he ended up dying after 3 hours of surgery to try to repair broken ribs, a punctured lung and kidney and liver damage. He was my dad's dachshund and it is so hard to hear your dad sobbing on the phone because his best friend is now gone in such a horribly violent and unexpected way. The great dane had previously attacked two other small dogs and they had been working with a behaviorist to try to fix the behavior, which the behaviorist thought was fixable. They are now blaming themselves for not sending her back to rescue after the other incidents. If they had this dog would still be alive. It is human nature to blame yourself when this stuff happens and there isn't much you can say to comfort them. We have all been a crying mess over the whole thing. The great dane went back to the rescue within 12 hours of the latest incident, so in a way they are mourning the loss of two dogs. Such a horrible situation.

I woke up last night to "no no bad dog" laying on my select comfort mattress control. My bottom half was sagging! My sleep befuddled brain thought I was under attack at first from the whirring of the mattress box and my body being moved...kind of funny. Then since I was awake I heard coyotes CLOSE, they were carrying on and sounded like they were right outside my window, which would probably mean the chicken coop or horse barn. So I spent the rest of the night awake stressing about the chickens and my old skinny horse. So now I feel like a zombie from lack of sleep. BTW everyone was fine but this is the first time I have known of coyotes getting this close to the house and I don't like it. There isn't any woods near me so they usually stay on the other side of the ravine/creek in the fields to the back of my property. Not sure what I am going to do if they decide to start lurking. They are becoming such an issue EVERYWHERE and I haven't heard of a good way to stay safe from them. If they decide your property is a buffet they will come back until they get what they want. I guess in Carmel a lady left her house to run an errand and came back to a destroyed house. A coyote had busted through her door and killed her dog IN HER HOUSE. It really is terrifying.

When I was in animal control, I had a poor elderly man have his lil dog taken, leash and all by coyotes. This was heart breaking and I will never forget it. He said to me, he couldn't hold the leash it was too strong!

Another incident, they entered a fenced yard and took a medium sized beagle mix type dog. They are severely overpopulated, since they no longer have a predator that can eat them here, and have adapted well even to city life.. I would be concerned for a child's safety, or small adult if they are known to be around! They can reach the size of a german shepard. I am a small person so that's a big animal to me. DNR told me its due to so many subdivisions built in the late 90s early 2000s, they are running out of their natural food supply due to so much of our wildlife depleted by "land improvements".
Seriously...disclaimer.. this is what I have learned from my own life experiences. I am not saying anyone should ever place themselves at risk of being attacked or bitten by dogs or coyotes! I have been attacked and bit by dogs more than once as an AC officer for 5 years. If I was attacked and had nothing with me to protect my self, my arm is going down their throat and grabbing guts, holding on til they choke out. Not to be gross, but honestly, that's the fastest way to stop the animal! I am posting this in case someone is ever faced with the situation, works with dog attacks too! Yep, you are gonna get bit, but its better than being severely mauled, or dead. Every time I see fatal dog attacks on the news it just breaks my heart. Attacks by coyotes scare me, that's even more beyond our control.
I'm still alive folks. Computer at home decided to die on me. Working on getting a new one. Chickens are doing great. They are about to bury me under eggs. I have one broody sitting on a few right now. My new babies arent babies any more they are growing fast.
Glad to hear from you, RIP poor computer!

to you and wife.

I've been sitting here trying to read all 13 days that I've missed sgain and I'm down to the last twenty pages.

The chickens and chicks are good, Our raised beds are going in nicely, We've had a lot of company with more to come, and all is great but very busy. I can't wait for things to slow down a little!

I'm looking forward to reading more and thanks for posting the vanilla info earlier!

X2, i need to go look for it! Vanilla is crazy expensive and we use a lot of it. I am so far behind its crazy! Finally catching up tonight.

My cortnix via Johnny2000. I have about 30 healthy ones after I got the spradle leg under control. The 2 gold ones are already my favorite.
Hope you waited out the rest, some hatch slower. Congrats on the babies! I think the golden are my favorites too! They are such precious lil things when they hatch. I lay my hand in the brooder every few hours to "socialize" and handle the babies often. They are normally timid but doing this, I find they will bond to people much easier. Spradle leg can happen even in the healthiest of chicks, I have went to using the rubberized net shelf liner for hatches. It washes well, and they don't slip on it. Paper towel is ok, but I got a lot of spraddled chicks when I used it.
