INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Waiting on the PO to call.

Re: the EcoGlow, I'm glad I turned it on Friday. I know it's radiant heat and the chicks warm up by touching it, but it was only 80 degrees under it on Saturday. 89 today. Makes me feel better about the chicks' safety, especially since we're getting guineas, too.

Do you like my fancy water bottle hangers? Old pants hangers from some mysterious dry cleaner in another land, long long ago, far far away.

So, two new things to add to the equation.

First, I'm not so sure now that I was hearing difficult breathing sounds from the gray EE. Gray stopped making the rumbly breathing sound after I put him in the isolation cage - until last night. When I had him in the towel, and he calmed down, I was gently stroking the feathers around his face with a cotton ball, he laid his head down in my hand and started rumbling. I think that the rumbly breathing I heard might have been him purring. I'm going to feel really stupid if that's the case. I really really wish someone who knew something could come look at these birds and tell me whether or not I actually have any problems.

So, his eye problem really could be just an injury... if so, could it have infected, and that spread into his sinuses, and cause some of the other stuff I'm seeing? I absolutely can not afford to pay a vet to look at this bird.

Oh, and I put his friend in, and they're both much happier for the company.

This post has been edited because I'm a dork. I don't usually try to hide my shame, but this time I've gone to wasting people's time, and I'm not okay with that.

Wish me luck.

Good luck, cheetah.

My (lack of) news: I called the PO because they didn't call me this morning. She said "I haven't received my 2nd run yet." I didn't know there was a 2nd morning run. Getting anxious. No updates via tracking since last night.

I decided to move my broody out of the chicken pen before her eggs hatch, so I went in tonight to get her.  I picked her up and found that of the 6 eggs under her, 1 was crushed and another cracked.  It must have happened either today or yesterday, because the crushed egg was pretty developed.  What a bummer.  Hopefully the other 4 are ok.  They are Marans eggs from @ellymayRans
.  I also have 6 in my 'bator because they wouldn't all fit under the broody.  If her hatch doesn't work out, I'll try to slip some of the 'bator chicks under her.

O no! So sorry to hear that! Good thing you got all those extras! ! ;)

Quote: I'll need another week to 10 days to find out if the eggs are fertile. I have not cracked any. I wanted all of the chicks I could get before June.
Depending on how many hatch / develop before June, I might sell eggs or take chick orders then. I do have 1 person on a waiting list for eggs right now. I only have 1 BLRW hen laying at the moment.

SO cute pictures of all your new babies! Thanks for sharing. Of all the times I've gone into our new RK, many chicks and ducks were assumingly sold out since there was litter and feeders/waterers in the tubs that had no hatchlings. Granted, the area the new Ft Wayne RK is at, Its not as big and has little variety of offerings compared to the Angola store but whatever. It is very hard not to take any home with me but knowing that I still have to build my brooder and I have nowhere to put them helps this

Thank you! It is so hard to resist the cuteness when space is an issue.

Just a quick update; not much has changed.

Gray is hanging out in the garage. It seemed happy to see me, and almost went back to sleep when I clucked at it and petted it's back. I had to show it where the food and water were - right eye is definitely gooky, although it does open most of the way. The bird is scratching at the eye and shaking it's head. Still only a little beak snot, still rumbly raspy breath.

I just had to add "gooky" and "rumbly" to my spellchecker's dictionary. And now I have to add "spellchecker". How does this computer not speak English?

Anyway, once it figured out where the food was, and got used to walking on newspaper, it ate with enthusiasm, and was still chowing down when I left.

I checked the rest of the flock pretty closely, and held each one close for a few good breaths - no one else has any symptoms at all.

As I expected, the other EE (Elsa) was waiting at the coop door, and kept looking at me as if to say, "WHERE DID YOU TAKE MY ONLY FRIEND IN THE WHOLE WORLD????" Heh.

I still have to read the links that were provided me, but if anyone would like to venture a guess at a diagnosis, I'd be happy to hear it.
I had a chicken once that had a swollen eye, I think she just scratched it though as there was no pus or signs of infection. I used contact solution/saline solution to wash it out 2x per day and used a trip-antibiotic ointment around the eye to help heal the scratch. She improved within a week and was back in with the others. Hope that helps and that she gets better soon!
