INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

The multi quote on this would be a mess, so here are all of my thoughts on an automated coop door.

Clearly there's no need to spend 200 or even 100 dollars on it. If you have it to spend and don't want to diy, bully for you. For the rest of us, we have an alternative.

This design is highly and easily customizable. I can set it up to run on a timer or remote or both or mystery option D that I haven't thought of but you've always dreamed about. A pressure-sensitive reversing switch would probably be the most expensive and difficult to implement. A breaker-beam that stops the door going down if an object is in the path is a much better solution for preventing squashed chickens. Also I could play with adding a resistor to the motor to slow it down, so the birds can get out of the way as it's coming down.

I think anyone who has a guillotine style door probably has to deal with PTS, or Poopy Track Syndrome. I think you just have to be diligent about clearing it. The up side of having no reversing switch is the frozen poop won't stop the door closing. PTS is going to be an issue no matter what auto-door you use, I think.

I'm totally serious about doing the wiring and soldering for this, and that's an open invitation for anyone who wants a door. I'll also be happy to customize as much as you'd like, within the reasonable limits of the project. If anyone wants my qualifications, I've worked in HVAC, plumbing, electrical and a bit of carpentry, but my career is jet mechanic. I've been custom jury-rigging since the T-bird I owned in high school, twenty-something long years ago.

Um, I think that's about it. If anyone has any other questions about it, fire them at me, and I'll answer best as I can. Ciao chicken friends!

It's really neat that you are able to engineer the kind of things you have to consider with a door. I get waaaayyyy nervous with electrical engineering because I don't understand it enough and am so fearful of starting a fire. I'll be interested in seeing what you can do. I need a second automatic door but it is not in the budget any time in the near future (for $200) because of surprise vet bills for my dog today! I'm excited to see what you come up with and may be a customer!

I don't care if it comes with rain - REALLY looking forward to the cool down, NOT looking forward to another HOT summer after today's preview.
On the other hand, I'm afraid the days of rain will put a delay on DH getting the chicken door finished and I am getting really tired of carrying 16 birds back and forth between coop and run every day after work to give them some fresh air time -- not comfortable enough with trusting them enough to just herd/call them yet.....at least it provides entertainment for the neighbors while they are sitting out on their back porch each evening. Oh how I long for the day I am able to just open the door and let them go in/out on their own (pretty sure THEY look forward to it too)

Grabbed some quick pics of some of my favorite chicks growing out. Cuckoo silkies! Looks like I ended up with a pair.

I thought I'd share my new babies as I'm not planning on getting chicks this spring

the plants in front are my blueberry plants and comfrey

Awesome! I would love to get started with honey bees - just haven't found the time yet. :/

Beautiful cuckoos! I had a hard time deciding between the cuckoo and the partridge silkies - went with the partridge because I've always been partial to redheads! My youngest daughter came over today and immediately fell in love with them:

I have several that have beautiful cuckoo-like markings on their wings (like the one in the second photo above) and I am anxious to see if they keep them through maturity.
