INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Thanks. I had to cut 1 row off the flat to make it fit in the cabinet but I was thinking about putting 2 egg turners in it if i have room once I have it all put together.
I love turners, I really need one for goose eggs! i am hand turning all of them, and my scovies started to lay yesterday too! Going to build a cabinet yet, just looking for the right "somethin" for the case.

A bathroom vanity would make a great incubator as well. The ones with the big drawer is the best because you could use it as a hatcher as well. Thats one of my summer projects. LOL You just turn the vanity upside down that way the drawer is on the bottom instead of top.

Thanks, ellymayRans for the Hawk/Predator info. I am going to contact a local bird expert who writes a column in the Sunday newspaper to ask her about the hawks/falcons/vultures. I have seen several hawks around here in past years including Coopers and Red Tail. I've heard that Coopers will actually attack a chicken hiding in a bush. The flocks of hawks or whatever they are that I've seen lately look like Common Black Hawks. A flock yesterday looked black, but had a horizontal white band across each wing span (not the tail), and I haven't been able to find anything like that online. My hens always sound the alert and either stand still or slip under a bush. Our back fenced in area where we let them loose during the day has plenty of foliage and hiding spots. The far backyard isn't fenced, and the land is more open, but I only let them roam around there when I am with them. Still, it amazes me how brazen the raptors are. I remember growing up that my Dad always hung aluminum pie plates on his blueberry bushes and around the garden to keep birds away. I'll try that.

A few years ago, our black cat showed up at the back door with a large rip down the back of his leg. Of course it was a Sunday so I had to take him to the Emergency$Vet. The vet said that it looked like a hawk attack because it looked like a talon had ripped downward on my cat's leg as he was running. I think that cost around $500. My sister who lives in Louisville saw her neighbor's young cat snatched up by a hawk, which was pretty traumatizing!

A couple of weeks ago, a neighborhood dog ran through his electric fence and almost snatched my EE. We had named her "Road Runner" for a reason! I wondered why she didn't fly and try to land on a branch when she was being chased. It was pretty scary watching that close call.

And you did remind me of the fact that the wild animals will keep returning if they find a food source.

I appreciate your input, and I will post updates about this problem. The next thing you know, I will have purchased an AK47 to get those hawks! Just kidding.

AK 47, naw, you need a bazooka! That'll teach the hawks. We were happy when a red tailed hawk family raised a couple chicks on our property last spring/summer, but now ''Hank the Hawk'' won't be so welcome. We won't let our chickens free range unless we'll be out with them. Still working on the coop, then will add the run(s).

Too fast- it's taking shape!!

Yes it is. We are happy with how it is coming along, seems like the chicks are growing almost as fast as the coop! Framing the roof really made it look like we were doing something, instead of just putting some nasty looking pallets on top of one another in the section of the yard that used to be a veggie garden. Wifey came home with cedar shakes for the roof, and added some T1-11 to a couple sides yesterday. Now to figure out the access doors and the pop doors. We've found lots of great ideas on this forum for both. And add a slide out for under the roost. And make a roost area. And more stuff.
Lookin good too fast. Hope you made it big enough for chicken math to strike once you're done

You better be quiet about chicken math, lol. We don't intend to have more than 8. We only have ~32 sq ft inside the coop.

Mother- I understand your views completely! And I'm a huge animal lover. I grew up in a household that rescued almost every animal we could get. Horses, sheep, dogs, cats, mice and even opossums. But...... Once you have animals that need protection and that you have given care to, feed to and spent time with and money on the protection mode kicks in. My mom watched a fox grab a lamb (1of 2) in front of her eyes , in the middle of the day. And even she grabbed a pistol to try to take care of it! Had to have dad do it eventually. And I still love it when I see foxes out and get excited like a little kid to see them. Also we have several hawks that survey our field and property. They've been very vocal lately and are probably mating. My Lf are out everyday and so far they haven't been bothered by them. I'm certain I could not let my Bantys be free. The large black ones your seeing have to be black vultures. Hawks are always solitary. We have a lot of the black vultures too.

Cluck- the incubator looks really neet!!
