INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I would think ash from the grill would have grease in it from the meat that was cooked on it.

Point. I wonder if there's a way to separate it. Maybe gently shake it and the greasy ash will settle out?

Also, would a little grease in the ash, mixed in with peat and whatever else, cause a problem?

Sounds like a comprehensive set of experiments is in order.

One day soon I'll dump some of my ash on a sheet of foil and spread it out for examination. I'll let you know what I find.

ETA Solved in only five edits. I just developed a method that guarantees success and wastes nothing. I'll post it with pics as soon as I can arrange to do so.

Quote: BE SURE IT'S NOT FROM TREATED LUMBER. VERY TOXIC.

Every once in awhile I burn some old wood stumps that we have to get rid of and keep the ash then. For straining, I finally got a garden strainer that I can sit on top of a 5 gal. bucket to strain out the large chunks. I only do this if there is the possibility of nails or other debris being in there with it.

The ash and leftover chunks from wood burning is okay for them to peck at and eat also. Good source of vitamin K I understand among other things!

Here's the strainer I ended up getting:

I think the only thing you really need is a couple 5 gal buckets and a friend with a wood stove. A lot of both around.

Yep! Just be sure the folks aren't burning treated lumber or any other items in their wood burner. Wood only...and not treated!

I got the strainer, actually, because step-son was sending over his wood burning ash and sometimes they had nails in the pieces of wood they were burning..and other small pieces of metal. So I had to strain it so I wasn't getting anything in there they could get "hardware disease" from.

This hatching thing is way more nerve wreaking than just picking out chicks!! I'm dying to move my hen to see if anything is happening but I'm afraid it would hurt the eggs if they are going to hatch. It's a good thing I'm at my chicken limit or is have a heart attack from doing this again!

Just know it will turn their poo black if they eat the chunks, ask me how I know!! ;D

I was just about to toss these eggs. Because I was thinking this hen was way over due to hatch! But I sure am glad I didn't look what we have :)

One little Muscovy duckling!!! I have not messed with these eggs at all besides counting them! This is her first time going broody. Mallory seemed to know what she was doing. She had around 20'ish eggs under her at the beginning and she would push out the bad ones. She would roll them all the way out if the barn. So I figured I would let her do her thing! I really didn't know when she started to sit so the hatch date was a guess! And like I said I was getting to the point I wanted her out of the broody trance. But I guess Mallory is a good momma. Hope we have a few more in the morning!
