INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I'll have to go back and look at the symptoms you mentioned, but I thought you said something about seeing scabs or blood on her head. I had a silkie that got pecked in the head and I found her just huddled in the middle of the cage. No movement, almost lifeless but was still breathing. Took her in and try to offer food and water, but again, almost lifeless. She eventually died the next day, but with the crested birds and vaulted skulls, I'm thinking she was pecked in the head and brain damage occurred,

Ya Brad, I did see a couple spots on her head that looked like she may have bn pecked a time or two. I'm really stumped as to why she died. You are right about the crested birds getting picked on, hey especially get harassed when their crests are wet. When wet they look quite odd almost like worms sticking out everywhere. I'm going to separate the Polish from the rest of the LF flock, was planning on doing it anyway later in the summer but I don't want t lose another of my babies! Dilly and Mohawk are the only two I have left so I'll b in the market for a couple more girls when they get closer to laying.
I really appreciate all the input from you guys, I just want t b sure I do t lose another and the comments are giving me ideas on what I need t check up on. Thanx

It could be overheating and need a new fan. if it is overheating then continued use could cause harm to other parts including the hard drive. I would backup all important stuff and get it checked out. Our friend is very fair on his prices.

Thanks for the info - hoosier cheetah has offered to help too, hubbie wants to try to figure it out - we have a service we use (yearly fee) and it gets fixed for a few days and then starts crashing again. Right now the desperate need for a coop is more important than the computer though so if it goes - we may just have to deal without it for awhile and use the old finicky laptop.

But I am saving this link for future reference.

Well, when it rains it pours.  After owing thousands in taxes last month, 6 sick animals in the last three weeks, 2 emergency vet visits and a paralyzed rooster, my guest bathroom has sprung a serious leak at 9:30 at night.  No shut off valve.  I'm already nearing the bottom of my poor abused bank account and still have a follow up vet visit for the swollen faced dog.  Now I am going to have a $300 plumbing visit to pay for. :hit   I'm really freaking stressed and depressed and definitely in tears.  When will life get easier and better?

I'm so sorry. Is there anything I can do to help?? Hugs. There's nothing worse than problems piling on.

She was abducted by Stefano DiMera and taken to a secret location in South America for cloning. The clone will then return to Salem and sell him two percent of Titan Industries. :-D

Okay, the truth is the two GCs have exactly the same personality, so I thought one of them was unnecessary. Especially with the very limited time I have to develop them. I almost combined Anne and Catherine... But my Catherine really is as dumb as a bag of hammers, so I thought it would be fun to leave her in, as a counterpoint to Elsa and Penelope. I think it will give depth and flexibility to my cast.

I have too many thoughts.

One question - how do you truly know that your chickens are not thinking these things? I mean I guess I may be totally off my rocker (quite likely) but as I sat and roared I also thought - I could see this chick, or that chick (of mine's) name inserted right into this character. Maybe therein lies the problem, there are a limited number of true characters in the chicken world and they all just repeat a lot. Then they are not nearly as complex as I thought. Oh no - my world crumbling.

So sorry. I am with yah sister. Since mothers day we have had three major car issues (one repair put on hold, I am not goign anywhere soon), dog to the vet and now the computer crashing and consequently my babies (the chick kind) have no place to live. When it rains it pours has been echoing thru my head all day!

I have a chick question for all you experts. My babes were 4 weeks old Monday - that means their brooder can be 75 right? It has been nice and toasty here and without the heatlamp their brooder is staying between 75-80. Most of the day they spend out in the run and I bring them in at night (under much protest). But the past two nights, without the heat lamp they freak out! It seems to be a light issue not a heat issue (if I put them back int he brooder when it is still nice and sunny they don't et so upset) and was worse tonight than last night. They are not acting cold or hot, they just don't like the dark and cry and cry very loudly for 20-30 minutes. Their brooder is far enough away from the light in the room and on the east side of the house so it is pretty dark in there even with the room light on. But they need to get used to the dark right? - so they are ready for the outdoors once they are there full time. In the meantime I feel like the meanest mama hen ever. Queen Elizabeth is older than the rest by several days to a week, she really flipped tonight and I took her out b/c I was afraid she woudl hurt herself. She kept flying of the roost into the side of the brooder. I got her calmed down and put her back. She stopped her seeming suicide attempts but was walking around the outer edge of the brooder scratching and crying. They even freaked the dog out - he takes his job of honorary roo very seriously and was outside and about knocked the door down to see what was wrong with his girls. After 15 min they began to calm down, it went in waves, they'd calm down and then get worked up, calm down, get worked up. By 30 min. they seemed resigned to their new reality and by an hour were making their normal chortling peeping noises. None of them are particularly happy about the dark but 2 are the most unhappy and really seem to get the rest worked up. So is this adjustment normal or am I just being a worried mama hen?

Thanks!

I've gone through that before with my chicks, and my experience is that it's fairly normal for them to not like the change. I worried and would turn the light on, just to experience it again the next night. I know it sounds crazy but here's what has worked for me. I put a blanket over their cage! I made it completely dark for them- I had to leave the room for a few because I hated hearing them so upset, but 5-10 minutes later it's completely quiet. I tried it because I know that's what you do with other birds like parakeets, so I thought what the heck!

You might give it a try- cover them up completely. They do get noisier for the first couple of minutes but they should be completely calmed down within 10 minutes. Like I said, I did leave the room so they wouldn't hear me and I wouldn't hear them. It's worked with every batch of chicks I've raised so far. Once they get used to that routine, they'll calm down much quicker and with much less fuss. Hope this helps!
