INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Quote: I go to retailmenot and get coupons for either 10% off or $10 off $50. The $10 off $50 tends to be a better deal as long as I'm getting close to $50. However the best discount is getting clearance stuff marked way down by asking just the right person.

Quote: My younge roosters were mating my ducks last fall. Right now I don't have any young young roosters with the ducks. I did not care to look out and see the rooster sitting on one of my ducks.

Lastly - a question: What do you have in your chicken first aid kit? We are goign out of town for a week, and I want to put together a first aid kit for the chicks, just in case, since someone else will be caring for them.

So far with help from LPT the list includes Blue Kote, Corrid, Antibiotics, Electrolytes (where do I get those?) and Poly Vi Sol without iron, Apple Cider Vinegar, anything you would add? Thanks for your input!
Hi, Flyladyrocks. I highly encourage you to include Vetwrap and antibiotic ointment (without pain relief). Great thinking ahead!

I have had a couple of eggs that have looked like this.

I am sorry that the yolk is broke but there is thick strings of white that almost look like it had started to cook in the shell. Looked pretty nasty but I didn't notice a smell. Any guesses what caused it?
Hi, Number9. How old was the chicken that laid this egg? Last year, when my chickens were pullets, I got quite a few strange eggs that looked normal on the outside, but had extra white strings, or milkiness, that I just wasn't comfortable eating. I gave those to the dogs or back to the chickens.
Oddly enough, I'm not an avid egg eater. They slightest strangeness I see can really put me off.

I lost one of my silver duckwing OEGB today, She was internally laying and I new it was bound to happen but still a little sad. Don't get me wrong, I am sad that she is gone, but I feel worse for her cage buddy. Which also happened to be her sister. She seems a little lost.

Then I am doing chores today and my white rock hen is laying down. I continue to feed and water them and she is walking like an elderly person with a bad knee or hip. I am fairly certain it was a rooster incident. He is always very nice to her, but he is huge. Didn't think I would really have a problem since she was so big also, but I guess I was wrong.

ETA:I forgot to include the part about the white rock hen

So sorry for ur loss. Roosters can do some damage. My turkey, Bob is walking like an elderly person too. But he still makes it up to the house for treats. So I am happy as long as he isn't suffering. I hope ur rock isn't suffering either and I hope she has a full recovery.

Good Morning Everyone,

I am looking for a suggestion. I have a sick chicken named Sweetie. She has been sick on and off a few times in her one year and has always recovered, however, I'm worried that its Marek's coming back. I do not have a confirmation that Sweetie specifically has MD, but I do know that my Lucy died from it.

Sweetie has responsiveness in her feet, but is unable to stand.
She is eating and drinking (water with vitamins and a little ACV) well, but is very sleepy and she is losing weight.
She will wake up and hang out with me for awhile as long as I hold her and she doesn't have to be mobile.
Her poo is normal and not runny.

I know this could be her shutting down, but I also know there are several things that could have similar symptoms. If I were going to try an antibiotic or medicine of some kind, on the off chance that its not MD, do you have any suggestions? I'm understand that the odds aren't in her favor, but I don't want to give up on every chicken that gets sick just assuming its the MD. Thank you in advance!

Man, my egg production has been TERRIBLE the last few weeks. Now granted, I only have 4 adult hens, but I am lucky if I get an egg or two a day out of them. My easter eggers in particular haven't been laying a darned thing! They are 100% free range now, plenty of dust bathing space and still getting supplemental feed in addition to free ranging. Roosters left a month ago and they have been a happy bunch since. Not sure what is going on!?!?!? I am waiting on 6 pullets to get started, they are around 20 weeks old so I keep expecting it! Actually one of the Marans pullets laid for a week and then stopped. I would like her to start up again!! The weather has been great so they don't have an excuse there!!! I guess I need to start looking for a hidden nest somewhere.....hmmmmmm

I'm sorry! Doesn't sound like typical Marek's symptoms does it? Did you see the thread on Hyperium(I think that is how it was spelled)/St. John's wart to help treat the Marek's lesions? Might be worth a try. I have been struggling with Gregor. He seemed to be better after his acupuncture treatment but still hasn't improved as much as I'd like. he is eating but still dropping weight/muscle. I am going to make a decision this weekend as to quality of life. It is a major bummer because I like his color the best of all of my Bielefelder roos but at this point I'm not sure I'd want to breed him anyway in the off chance he has a genetic pre-disposition to something.

Hi again everyone! I keep getting busy and staying away WAY too long! My broody hatched a pretty little EE for me <3
She originally had 3 eggs but one got broken about 5 days from hatch and one fully developed but never hatched :-\
I had planned on keeping them separate in the main coop after hatch. Broody momma, Lemon-Pepper, decided they needed to run with the other girls 2 weeks after Little Bit hatched. What a good Momma!
Hi @Chickiebaby1!
^saw her babies last week <3

Looking for suggestions, ideas, pictures, designs, drawings, etc. for the Official Indiana T-shirt. We would like to get as many submitted as possible. Please PM lilmizscareall with any ideas, suggestions, etc. Also any input on style, size, etc. would also be appreciated.

We are also still looking for input on the 2 options listed on the flyer for the pot luck/and or bbq, as well as volunteers for demos on FF, candling, or anything any one would like to demo, talk about or do.

Hi ChickCrazed, There are several strains of MD and Lucy had one that affects the nervous system and organs. For many who have this strain, it comes and goes over time and then one day the chicken is just paralyzed or their organs shut down. My hens legs are responsive unlike when Lucy was sick, so I'm still hoping that this is something else. It really stinks because she is the most friendly chicken I have. She will come up to me and basically ask to be held anytime I go outside.

On another subject, I have missed a week of posts, so where did you find someone to give your chicken an acupuncture treatment? I have been wanting one for myself, but I have never thought of it for my pet. I will definitely look into the St. John's Wort treatment for Mareks. Thank you for the suggestion!
